All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
vanity | 2/26/18 | CottonBall

Posted on 02/26/2018 12:12:20 PM PST by CottonBall

I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.

We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.

But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.

I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.

So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.

We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

nw_arizona_granny’s Thread #2

This is your ping to the All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics Thread

This is an ONGOING thread, meaning drop in when you want and chat. There is no one topic or story, but ongoing sharing with prepper friends. I figured I’d see how granny’s thread scenario worked out, if anyone was interested in an ongoing thread vs. a weekly one – it’s up to the group to keep it going, since I run out of things to say (eventually)!

Check out V K Lee’s links to some neat old recipes. Those are my favorites to browse. I’ll read recipe books like a regular book, just for fun and not necessarily looking for a recipe for dinner.

If you want off/on this list, just let me know.

My method of keeping my old grandmother’s cast iron skillet going is the same method she used - a scrubby and soap. It is cast iron so no need to pamper it.

Can't stockpile certain drugs

But you can keep ahead of your prescriptions. Refill as soon as your insurance will allow. If it lets you renew every 3 weeks rather than wait out the month, then by the third month, you've stored back a month of meds. Of course, use the old ones first.

Many times, what people think of as vegetables are really fruit. Usually, fruit can be grown in front lawns. Hey, gotta stay a step ahead of HOAs.

I have way more jars than I use but boy was I ticked when I went out to the garage to get one and found someone had helped themselves to a bunch. They left the boxes so no one would be the wiser until canning time came. I can’t imagine who’d take them or that they had the time to empty the boxes.

If you have wild mustang grapes in your area, do a search for mustang grape wine recipes. Be careful though because some have reactions somewhat like a poison ivy when picking. Perhaps wear latex gloves and long sleeves. Guessing there’s any variety of wild grapes to be found free for the picking.

Say no to Penzeys Spices. I have them on my ban list under sections for supporting the NFL kneelers, friends of Rachel Maddow and Hollyweirdos, the owner called Trump voters racists in a newsletter and is big with the LGBT crowd.

I dumped all my makeup years ago. Can’t be bothered with it. Been married 30+ years and not out looking to impress. If I have to look at Mr. b without makeup, then he can look at me without.

Haven’t been to a beauty shop since who knows when. Straight hair. Hubby cuts mine and I cut his. Saves on the budget, gas, time and energy.

It’s hard to find a thick rind watermelon anymore but if you do, make sweet pickled watermelon rind. I can eat a jar in one sitting. The thin rind ones at the grocery store are just too thin.

http://texascookin.blogspot.com/2012/04/if-you-like-schlotzskys.html

I’ve posted this Schlotsky’s Sandwich recipe before but the buns are so super easy and no kneading. I won’t post the entire thing since it’s long. Don’t know why it’s long as it takes all of 60 seconds to throw it together in the morning and come back that evening and make the buns. I do not bother with the cornmeal, use warm tap water instead of milk and regular all purpose flour. It makes five 6” buns as written but if you don’t like odd numbers, add 1/4 C more flour (nothing else) and it’ll make six.

For the baking pans, I use some little 6” pyrex pie plates and those old little Corningware sauce dishes. Multi use! No need to rush out to buy something new.

Save corn cobs to make corn cob jelly. The cobs can be frozen until you have enough.

Use a scrubby on mine as well along with the kosher salt. Wipe it out with paper towel and a quick wipe with a cotton flour sack tea towel to remove as much salt as possible. Never use soap or water only because early on was told by my ‘elders’ it shouldn’t be used. Understood it stripped the patina and then the rust factor involved.

When we moved to the country, my dad planted some grapes here to satisfy his wine addiction. He loved to make wine.

They lasted for a time but faded when we went through the drought a few years back. Those that produced fruit were stripped by the birds with little left for us humans. Alas, they’ve been gone now for so many years. Don’t remember what kind of grapes they might have been.

Had forgotten why Penzy’s was on the boycott list. Vaguely remember when it was decided that another supplier had to be vound to replace them. Those looking for Spices suggest you google ‘bulk spices sold on line’ and you’ll see a number of parties found. American Spice Company being one

Rarely wear make up any longer. Once retired to do so seemed a waste of time and energy. There was a time when makeup was a normal morning routine :-/ and just going to the grocery would first do my hair and makeup before leaving. These days all that seems necessary is to be dressed with cover in all the proper places :)

I will use the electric trimmer to work on hubby’s hair line. He is not amused by long hair growing down the back of his neck. Even used the trimmer to shave his back a few times. When asked, he’ll take a small pair of shears and trim my split ends occasionally. A beauty shop has never been on a list of favorites. Always seemed to be a waste of time, spend at least an hour there, come home dissatisfied and disappointed.

These days wear my hair long. Before my stroke, when there was still coordination in my joints, was actually able to braid my hair in a French braid. These days, all that can be mustered is a ponytail with braiding afterward. When feeling energetic, I’ll use electric curlers in my hair before the tail and braid. Straight hair is all I’ve ever known. Once was envious of those with natural curly hair, years ago. LOL these days more than happy to still have hair on my head :-)

It sounds good, can’t wait to try it. I’ve been wanting to make some sandwich type buns so this is perfect timing.

You say it makes about five? The recipe says two or three, those must be huge!

I didn’t realize this was allowed, but my xiidra refill comes up every 24 days. I figured I would get two extra months a year out of it. The only reason I know this is the manufacturer sends me a text when I can get a refill. So now I’m going to suggest hubby tries it with his prescriptions. Just a few extra days a month will add up by the end of the year.
