Ive been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.
We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I dont mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.
But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on grannys thread.
I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on grannys threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room and insisted upon having a basement from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products
.the list is endless.
So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have grannys ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.
Well just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I wont be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. Id just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.
Here are grannys threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

I have no clue!
but i do grow peppermint and spearmint (and a chocolate mint that i want to take a nap in, yum!). The spearmint is my favorite- it has more mintiness, like the gum flavor. Grows better in the cool weather, while peppermint does better with heat.
I’m thinking that the peppermint is the one that we want, for tabbouli. The Spearmint seems to be the one that doesn’t taste right in that application.
Thanks!
Mint is one of those plants that can have radically different flavor based not just on genetics, but on soil conditions, weather patterns, water, relationships with surrounding fungi, etc.
I don’t know a specific variety for tabbouli, but I’d suggest starting with plants instead of seeds. If possible, see if you can sample a leaf before buying. Whether you start with seeds or plants, it might take some experimenting to get the flavor you want.
for all: Covenantor’s outdoor cooking without utensils starts at 6:52.
The orange-flavored eggs might taste a bit odd, but I love the fish in wetted newspaper idea. And newspaper might be more handy than citrus ;) The bread on a stick idea reminds of what CW soldiers made - cornmeal wrapped around their ramrods and put in the fire.
Thanks for your response; you have a lot of knowledge, and always offer thoughtful answers.
Yesterday, we bought both a plant and the clamshell at the grocery; they both seemed to have the ‘clear’ flavor that we wanted. I will buy plants to start with, and test out a few varieties in seeds.
This is your ping to the All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics Thread
We are at post #285 now, so check in to see what is new!
This is an ONGOING thread, meaning drop in when you want and chat. There is no one topic or story, but ongoing sharing with prepper friends. I figured Id see how grannys thread scenario worked out, if anyone was interested in an ongoing thread vs. a weekly one.
If you want off/on this list, just let me know.
V K Lee has been sharing some websites to peruse about all-things prepper. So I figured I’d pass them along. Thanks, VK!

One thing I’m curious about is - with Trump in office, has your prepping slowed down?
We went Galt shortly before the election. Escaped Mexifornia and bought some rural property with the intent to become as self-sufficient as possible. It went well for about a year, and then we decided to join in the Trump Economy, and leave prepping/Galting until later.
I’m still storing food, making sure I have medicines on hand, have water filters, etc, but not with the ferver of the Obama years. I’m hoping Trump can turn around the path to hyperinflation and economic collapse, but we will see...but it’s still good to have prepping supplies in case we have our own personal financial issues.
I’ll just throw out some topics and if anyone wants to talk about them, jump in! Just hoping the subjects themselves will spark some ideas and/or questions.
(My typing is limited this week, since I am having more arm pain than usual, or I’d cut and paste some info I have on each subject. Hopefully I can do more next week!)
Fish antibiotics
Cast iron cooking
homemade laundry detergent (or any other cleaning product)
Water filtration
Keeping livestock
Precious metals
...I know I’m missing 20 or 30 important ones!
I’m excited - I just ordered some of those beefy beans. Along with Welsh onions and umbria peas and 2 types of green bean.
So, each of the different-colored beefy grex beans produces a different plant? I thought you said something to that effect....
Were on a small (8 acres) farm, 1 acre pond. Good well, tank full of propane, no cabel but country Wifi. About three months of food, One 9 mm. A brother in law with a big safe full of guns a room full of amm.
A brother in law with a big safe full of guns a room full of amm.
Sounds like a good family :-)
What do you grow on your farm?
I’ve heard mint is very invasive and if you can do it, container gardening it is the best.
Trump only has a max of 7 years left in office.
Then what happens is a crap shoot.
Salt.
For all the prepping threads I see and advice for what to store as far as quality foods and medicines, I see salt mentioned very seldom.
Salt is critical for survival and will probably be worth its weight in gold.
It stores very well in canning jars although it can be corrosive. I don’t know what else to do with it to keep it from caking.
Maybe vacuum sealer bags and then in a canning jar.
Anyway, aside from its use for survival, it would be very useful for bartering.
.
Sea salt doesn’t “cake.”
I have several 25 pound bags of it and they show no evidence of caking.
.
.
The Day of Trumpets in 2024 is no “crap shoot,” its an absooute guarantee.
There will be no more “Kingdoms of Men” after that day.
.
Thank you
Does anyone use a tankless water heater? What brand/size?
Pros or cons?
Any info appreciated. Thanks.
We are going to be putting one in ourselves.
We have a very small electric one for the cottage because a small tank is not enough. Not only do we not have room for a larger tank, but don’t use it enough to justify the electric usage.
For a whole house, the electric ones just do not work well. They need to be gas or propane.
Pro is that you’ll never run out of hot water like you can with a tank with one load of laundry and a shower. They are smaller and don’t take up quite as much room as a tank.
The con is that they require proper maintenance and yearly cleaning to keep them working right. Expect it to need more attention than a tank.
I’ll ask mr. mm about brands and other pros and cons.
