An immense black hole 100,000 times bigger than the sun has been discovered at the heart of the Milky Way.
The enormous void, which lies around 25,000 light years from Earth, could help scientists uncover the how stars, galaxies and even life itself came to be in the universe. ..."
According to reports, this newly-discovered black hole could rank as the second largest ever seen in the Milky Way.
Despite its immense size, scientists have called it a "mini me" version of its super-massive "cousin" known as Sagittitarius A*.

26 light years would be the distance of the relatively nearby star Vega, ‘star’ of the film Contact with Jodie Foster.
I think that was why the figure was stuck in my head. I used to mention Vega in my sidewalk astronomy sessions here in New York City a few years back, Vega being one of the brighter stars in the sky, and easily visible even here in light-polluted NYC. It’s part of the Summer Triangle with Deneb and Altair.
“Arroway discovers a signal repeating a sequence of prime numbers, apparently sent from the star system Vega some 26 light-years away. This announcement causes Drumlin and the National Security Council led by Michael Kitz to attempt to take control of the facility.
Arroway’s team then discover a video buried in the signal: Adolf Hitler’s opening address at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Arroway and her team postulate that this would have been the first television signal strong enough to leave Earth’s atmosphere, taking 26 years to reach Vega and then transmitted back from there.”—wikipedia
I think you mean precision and not accuracy. Accuracy is a moot issue. The precision comes from calculation of the gravitational effect of the black hole on surrounding stars. You could argue the precision is too significant, but as long as the methodology is stated in the paper and everyone s on board with the method, it becomes an acceptable estimate. You could also formulate your own methodology and publish your results, which is how science is supposed to work.
Shep Smith is aroused.
I’m gonna fire up the old star cruiser and go out there and tee one off for a hole in one.
I’ll probably get sucked into some kind of alternate reality, but I’ll have a hole in one.
Where does a black hole go?
packing my bag
it doesn’t go, it sucks
Yikes! Enough with the creepy Sulu pics, please. <\shivers>
Sulu has gone where many men have gone before.
That pic is mental torture on the order of Helen Thomas pics...
On multiple occasions.
“Where does a black hole go?”
To Walmart with his EBT card.
Guess we should stop studying the stars then :)
Should have stuck with the flat earth theory too.
Or earth is the center of the universe :)
Amen.
Whole point of a 100,000 Sun’s mass black hole is that 1 to 10 million solar mass black holes are common in comparison. Something happens such that the smaller version are only a short transient phase. WHY?
Re: Massive black hole 100,000 times bigger than the Sun discovered
Bigger is supposed to refer to volume. It does not necessarily equate to more massive.
