In an extraordinary find, a team of Australian researchers have uncovered the world's oldest fossils in a remote area of Greenland, capturing the earliest history of the planet and demonstrating that life on Earth emerged rapidly in the planet's early years.
Led by the University of Wollongong's (UOW) Professor Allen Nutman, the team discovered 3.7-billion-year-old stromatolite fossils in the world's oldest sedimentary rocks, in the Isua Greenstone Belt along the edge of Greenland's icecap.
The findings are outlined in a study published in Nature, with co-authors Associate Professor Vickie Bennett from The Australian National University (ANU), the University of New South Wales' (UNSW) Professor Martin Van Kranendonk, and Professor Allan Chivas, from UOW.
The discovery of the Isua stromatolite fossils provides a greater understanding of early diversity of life on Earth and researchers said could have implications for our understanding of life on Mars. Professor Nutman, from UOW's School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, said the Isua stromatolite fossils predated the world's previous oldest stromatolite fossils -- which were found in Western Australia -- by 220 million years.

These finds are suggestive that a key variable for the abundance of life in the universe — it’s survivability in early unicellular evolution — is fairly benign, since the conditions of life that early in Earth’s geological history were not only harsh, but quite volatile.

Finally, religion is how we worship the Supernatural, while science is explicitly and exclusively devoted to study of the natural realm. So science would only begin to approach comparison to a false religion if & when scientists believed their theories despite contradictory evidence, or better ideas. It is exactly the case, however, when it comes to the AGW theory. And that is far from the case with evolution theories.
Agreed, of course.
I'm merely suggesting that not all of science is as corrupted by politics as the AGW hypothesis.
FRiend, the Hebrew word is "Etz" as in "Etz Chaim", the Tree of Life.
That's why, if you look up all the various Biblical translations, only seven, including the old King James render it "stock".
All the rest, including the new King James Version translate Etz as "tree" (22 translations), "piece of wood" (8), "wood" (6), or some variation such as "sacred pole" or "wooden idol" (6).
None -- zero, nada -- suggest that "Etz" might have something to do with non-wooden objects.
So, again, the point is: what our Bible condemns is worship of idols or any other false objects not of God.
But what the Bible never says, to pick an analogy, is: since some humans make idols out of clay, therefore all humans are forbidden to study, work with or produce useful object from clay.
It's not study and use the Bible forbids, it's worshipping false gods.
Of course I agree that nobody is truly atheistic, and that by denying true God "atheists" simply elevate something else into God's place -- atheists may worship false idols, such as science.
But as in the case of clay I mentioned above, God does not forbid us from studying nature, so long as we recognize Him as its & our God.
DungeonMaster: "It is very disappointing that you read the bible and think the word dust translates to a whole 15 billion year theory of evolution which is in a completely different order from the 6 days of creation."
Sorry, but it does not bother me in the least to suppose that for Infinite God billions of years can pass by like a single day for us, or that God planned & executed from the beginning the natural & human history leading to us.
Nor do I think God objects to us studying such matters, so long as we recognize Him as their & our Creator.
Psalm 90:4 : "A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night."
Thanks, I'll remember that. My KJV threw me a curve.
My understanding of how the Materialist thinks comes from when I used to believe in evolution and all but worshipped at Carl Sagan's feet. I love astronomy.
So for another analogy: There are two different ways to study the stars. The Christian way and the evolutionist way. Outwardly, the two methods look exactly the same.
The Carl Sagan way, the evolutionists way is worship/religion but not of God. The Christian way is ALSO worship/religion.
Science has always had problems with politics, religion and sensationalism. It has always worked out and as more and more studies are probing climate, so will AGW. I suspect that people will have been found to have had large impacts on climate and species diversity but that it’s not of an Al Gore level.
I'm merely suggesting that not all of science is as corrupted by politics as the AGW hypothesis. In the past, I'd have agreed with you.
However, modern science has been so corrupted by folks chasing government grants it's hard to believe anything anymore.
So do I, but sadly my talents for mathematics are much more at the "business economics" level than rocket science.
The one serious course in astronomy I took was enough to convince me I didn't really want to dig deeper... ;-)
DungeonMaster: "The Carl Sagan way, the evolutionists way is worship/religion but not of God.

Most Christian denominations, including mine, teach that God is the creator of all natural-science, and so any study of such matters as evolution, or even origins of life, are really studies of God's plan, processes and creative actions.
People who deny God by default elevate something else into His place -- very often just themselves or their political ideology or, on occasion, the disciplines & assumptions of natural science.
Whatever, these are all false gods and help distinguish God's people from all others.
Science itself does not ask for "belief" or "faith" or even "hope" -- none of such words have anything to do with strict scientific terminology.
Instead, we might recognize or acknowledge findings on some hypothesis as being a "confirmed" theory, pending future data or ideas which might yet falsify it.
When theories are strongly confirmed, we can use them in building machines & transportation equipment that our lives depend on, and in that sense we "believe" they work.
But in true science, it's always a temporary, conditional acceptance pending some future new data or ideas.
What denomination is that?
If God carefully describes 6 days of creation and points out specifically that the rest of the universe was made on the 4th day, then deciding not to believe that is a step away from the Word of God. Anything that is miraculous is not natural science. Science is blind to miracles.
Of course, but the Universe itself is a miracle of God, and so is everything in it, regardless of how many natural explanations science discerns.
Yes. It is such a religious discussion to contemplate "Why is there a universe?". Even science has nothing and you can hear the desperate attempt to throw out invented scientific sounding things when faced with that question.
If big bang then what caused the big bang? What child wouldn't ask that question? I remember an old astronomy book where they quoted some astronomer when asked what was God doing before the big bang. Answer: "Creating a Hell for anyone who would dare to ask".
I go to a non-denominational church, by the way. Our roots go back to John Darby.
Unfortunately, the federal government is allowing their bureaucrats to enact regulations that treat these hypotheses and theories as facts set in stone.
Hence the reason for government grants.
