Jonah Goldberg: No, I Will Never ‘Come Around’ to Supporting Trump
National Review ^ | April 16, 2016 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 04/16/2016 11:01:21 AM PDT by EveningStar

... It looks like the Trump body snatching virus I wrote about last month is spreading again. For a moment, after Wisconsin, it seemed like it might be going into remission. Nope, it’s actually spiking.

Last night the New York Post endorsed Donald Trump. After I criticized the editorial on Twitter, a Trump supporter tweeted at me “No Goldberg, you are wrong. Support the front runner and stop trying to burn the party. Unite it.” ...

On the drive in to my office this morning, I heard Hillsdale College president Larry Arnn, one of the wisest and gentlest souls I’ve ever encountered, describe Trump as a “good and honest man” and “quite brilliant.” A few minutes ago on Twitter, the great semi-retired editorialist Don Surber said to me, regarding Trump, “You will come around. Others may not because they are childish.” ...

If a president Trump does the right thing, I will say he did the right thing — because that’s my job. But I will never look at that fleshy pile of vanity, crudity, and deceit and say, “There’s a good and honest man.” Yes, yes, we all believe in redemption, so maybe he could have some Oval Office conversion, find a God that doesn’t consider profit maximization to be the key measure of a man’s soul, and become a good and honest man. Maybe the sudden bowel-stewing realization that he’s wildly unqualified for the job of commander-in-chief will arouse in him a humility never displayed in his gaudy romp across our airwaves ...

“Liberal Fascism”, was an interesting read. My grandmother hated Wilson, but he put all that info in a very accessible format. I guess someone since then has stolen his Twinkies, or whatever treat he likes best.

Goldberg will never never mention the power elite -CFR/TLC globalist influence behind both parties; except maybe to deride and mock conservatives who do. That’s why he is as much as part of the problem rather than a solution in this country. Without reading all his articles- I did read through most of his book that he avidly supports the “new conservatism” which is merely repackaged 21`st century globalism for Americans. A techno-feudal anti-Christian nightmare.

“The majority of polls indicate that Cruz runs far stronger than Trump against Hillary.”

If you’re going to go by head to head polls, I can only surmise you’re a Kasich supporter. He outdoes both Trump and Cruz by that metric. Oh, you’re not a Kasich supporter? Then you must believe, as I do, that head to heads mean nothing at this point in time.

I ask again, what is Cruz’s path to 270 after a contested convention? He will have to win NV, OH, VA and FL, all states where he came in a distant third. All states that were blue in 2008 and 2012.

What percent of disaffected Rep. voters in those four states will need to stay home for Cruz to have no chance to get to 270? Very few.

Little Jonah says: “On the drive in to my office this morning, I heard Hillsdale College president Larry Arnn, one of the wisest and gentlest souls I’ve ever encountered, describe Trump as a “good and honest man” and “quite brilliant.” ...

Larry’s right, Jonah. You make a huge mistake when you include men like him or Jeff Sessions in your articles and then try to contrast your view with theirs. It makes you look even more irrelevant than usual. You are a hopeless elitist, raised on the upper west side, who went to an all girls college. What was wrong with Hillsdale, Jonah, not upscale enough for you and mommy dearest?

Right after Lucianne left FR and there began a bad mouthing war between the two websites, someone mentioned that Lucianne had an affair with Hubert and there was quite a bit of documentation and evidence to the truth of the accusation. Lucianne worked for the HH presidential run back in 1968.

Absolutely, since he is editor of NR - On-line.

He is part of their top tier people that set the tone.

He is a smart fellow, a good conservative, but does himself no service in opposing Trump if Trump wins the convention. Oppose him getting the nomination. Defeat the Democrats. Call for policy stands when elected.

The Rino’s asked that of the hard line conservatives in the electorate. The conservative wonks endorsed that in past elections. Now they have to both live by it this cycle. I support Cruz to the nomination, but I will by a Trump hat the day Trump gets the nomination despite my previous preference.

Inspired by the mini-series 11.22.63 I read up on George Wallace. After dismissing the rhetoric from the writers and looking into how he ran his campaign and how he energized crowds it was easy to draw parallels between Wallace and Trump.

They obviously don’t stand for all of the same things, but they are close on many.

Wallace was only able to pick up 5 states.

It has become tough to support Cruz in most circles.

Even as a shot gun wedding vp.

Concerns me that trump is more animated in Making nice with Megan Kelly than cruz or walker or other former candidates.

I hope Jonah is wrong and trump turns into a mostly good change agent.

But the raw anger is leaving tons of ‘friendly fire’ casualties on our side

"you got something to say, say it straight out like a man."

You - according to your own words - are:

I hate to tell you this but: I don't care that you're Italian. I don't care that you're from Long Island. I don't care that you don't sleep (actually I do care a little about that - it's not good for you).

Stop the double and triple-spacing. It's the equivalent of playing html games here, and that ended with the Buchananites 16 years ago. John has designed a simple, easy-to-read website - and you are f*****g it up.

Also, stop the concern trolling. And go take a nap.

You are right, KC. Year after year they preached that we must accept Dole, McCain, Romney, and any other stiff they shoved up there to lose. We did, like dutiful republicans. Now we see that it was always about them—we must support them, but they feel free to abandon us when they don’t get their way. Jonah Goldberg is a spoiled child.

NR and other conservative media outlets are in the business of selling conservative philosophy, not getting results. As such, they have aligned with the GOP (or GOP Inc, as I call it), as the best avenue towards reaching those goals.

A guy like Trump isn’t selling their brand of conservative philosophy. He’s selling a largely non-partisan, pragmatic approach that’s results oriented. Some of those results are important conservative goals. Others frankly are’t.

But GOP voters like me don’t really care. We see that the biggest obstacle to reaching conservative goals is the democrat party. The second biggest obstacle is GOP Inc. This realization really panics GOP Inc, and their media outlets like NR, because it cuts into their ability to sway opinion. It also cuts into their bottom line.

So if you’ve been selling yourself as a principled, wishy-washy conservative like NR, much of the GOP, and Goldberg & others, you rightly see this as a rejection of your vision.

Unfortunately they have the benefit of not being results oriented, while the rest of us don’t have that benefit. This had to happen someday. Better now than later.

not from long island. Staten Island

yes, I have insomnia from a head injury. If you paid that much attention to me, you would have noticed I’ve been gone for swaths of 8 hours at a time lately. New meds are working :)

no, I don’t concern troll. In fact, it’s become such a worn out stupid term that has been so overused as to be meaningless. When 20 polls show the same thing, I pay attention to them. I’m a worrier. Naturally me. Sorry you don’t like it.

I love FR and donate as much as I can to the great bastion of conservatism online. Get a crow bar out and give 5 bucks.

And I LOVE using double space and will continue to do so.

You’re a FReeper, and didn’t say anything that was nasty, so have a good day.

Jonah is as full of himself as is Donald Trump. The real difference is that Trump is correct in his self-estimation. Goldberg, on the other hand, is just full of himself.

Donald Trump is an awakening Conservative. His Conservatism is in his nature; now he is coming to grips with crucial issues, and that Conservatism is really beginning to show. That Jonah is still focused more on superficial personality aspects continues to show.

As I have written based on over sixty years of battling for Conservative principles, Trump: Metaphor For American Conservatism.

“He will have to win NV, OH, VA and FL”

Once Ted loses the state of Florida, he will have to replace the 29 votes by winning PA AND WI, and still win the rest of the swing states. That is the reality; there are no magical electoral votes tucked away someplace;he won’t be able to “delegate rangle” his way to 270.

He is a loser right out of the gate.
