Fossil of massive crocodile found on edge of Sahara desert

Paleontologists have discovered the fossil remains of the world’s biggest ocean-dwelling crocodile buried on the edge of the Sahara, a creature that was twice the size of anything seen today.

Named Machimosaurus rex, this croc would have weighed in at least 6,600 pounds and been around 32 feet long. Other than its size, it would have looked much like a modern day crocodile except for its narrow snout – which was designed to allow it swim in the ocean.

I think I saw this creature in a SyFy movie the other day. It's another of the critters I wish I could see alive from a safe distance.

A giant skeleton prop from Star Wars is still in the desert of Tunisia. Someday someone is going to be thrilled and confused at their discovery.

Ever notice how they rarely have photos of the actual find? Paleontology is a very “interpretive” science, so the appearance of fossils is often missing a large percentage of the remains of the organism and the “scientists” have to interpret and extrapolate, often from fragmentary evidence. The theory of evolution heavily relies on these methods.

There were crocs this large, very recently, as far a geological time. Photo taken in 1957. 28 foot croc shot.

What a nightmare, that thing wouldn’t need a death roll to take you down and eat you, it’d just swallow you whole.
