Men who open doors for women are as guilty of sexism as those who are rude to them, according to a new study.
Psychologists found that a friendly or chivalrous attitude can mask chauvinistic and patronizing views because the men see females as weak creatures in need of their protection.
They warned that this benevolent sexism was harder to spot than the hostile version borne out of an open antipathy.
Jin Goh, a psychologist from Northeastern University, Boston, in the U.S., said: While many people are sensitive to sexist verbal offences, they may not readily associate sexism with warmth and friendliness. Unless sexism is understood as having both hostile and benevolent properties, the insidious nature of benevolent sexism will continue to be one of the driving forces behind gender inequality.

Isn’t the whole point of opening the door for a woman designed so that you can “check her out” without being obvious about it?
So in other words, you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. All part of being born a male apparently.
Oh shut up.
Especially a white, straight male.
Oh the horrors. Hubby opens my door, carries things for me, treats me well, kills bugs for me, does handiwork around the house. I probably have PTSD from all the benevolent abuse. I may never recover. I should quit my job and apply for SSDI.
Once worked in a law firm that had heavy glass doors between departments. If I saw an attorney coming through with a stack of law books, I would hold the door for him. Most of them would try to hold the doors for me. Usually it was a disaster — law books flying everywhere. Why should some poor shlub with his hands full hold open a door for me with empty hands? Just because I'm a woman? My arms aren't broken.
Having spent several months with both arms in casts,
= = = = = = = = = = = = =
‘Back in the day’ when casts were more cumbersome etc, it was said
“With both arms in casts, it is easy to find who your TRUE friends are when it comes to going to the head”.
As to the doors, few years back I waited and held the door for a woman who snarled ‘you don’t have to do that because I am a lady’....
To which I replied
“Your supposedly being a LADY never entered into my mind, I am a Gentleman”.
I can’t wait until the next world war when jihadi’s and 3rd world gangs are running wild, doing whatever they want with these morbid, liberal, man-hating women who loathe “Patriarchal Western Society”.
They will endure a life of slavery, torture, and rape that they themselves created and brought upon themselves.
All because they helped destroy the Western White Christian Male society where they enjoyed peace & relative tranquility & protection—in the name of “equality” of course.
If this attitude keeps up, the dividends for this train of thought won’t take long before they start paying.
A mannerly, courteous human being.
I guess sexism is the new word for respect!
“I opened a door for a woman once back in the 80s. She was a small overweight woman and the door was pretty tightly sprung. She called me a male chauvinist pig so I said Im sorry Ill do better as I released the door which knocked her down. She cussed me and told me to help her up. I declined and walked away.”
That story is too good to be true but I hope it is and I wish I coulda seen it.
I love chivalrous men. If they’re old I give them a friendly smile and thank them.
If they’re young I like to tell them their mama raised ‘em right.
Ambidextrous.
I have opened doors for other humans and have in the past opened doors for dogs, cats, horses, cows, hogs, peacocks and accidently for roaches snakes rats and ex wives. Even for a casket or two. I’ve opened doors for people to jump out of perfectly good planes or step out of a helicopter. The list goes on.
My favorite thing to do is open doors for myself. To a Porsche GT3 for example. Or a boat or other toy.
I’d really like to open a door to a padded cell and march in anyone that had to do with the study that is the subject of this thread.
Well played!

Funny post of the day!
Oh Jeez!...Which is it then? Open or not open?
I open / hold doors for men and women. What does that make me?
Bi-Portal
I just gotta quit trying to be clever on FR. You guys are genius’s . Now for the rest of my life I have to use the word “bi-portal”
I'm not that clever, in fact I have been keeping a calendar to mark down the few times my "comic genius" actually works!
When I was young, they helped in other ways....like letting me walk up the stairs first....in my mini skirt. So kind, those boys!!
