Carl Krawitt has watched his son, Rhett, now 6, fight leukemia for the past 4 1/2 years. For more than three of those years, Rhett has undergone round after round of chemotherapy. Last year he finished chemotherapy, and doctors say he is in remission.
Now, there's a new threat, one that the family should not have to worry about: measles.
Rhett cannot be vaccinated, because his immune system is still rebuilding. It may be months more before his body is healthy enough to get all his immunizations. Until then, he depends on everyone around him for protection what's known as herd immunity.

Hey Carl! Your kid is unvaccinated too - why are you sending him to school while trying to ban others?
MY surprised comment is ... imagine a family about to move and looking for a place to live in or near a particular place/city/community
imagine the conversations about how wonderful to be near shopping or sports arena or school(s)
Now imagine deciding on the school with the most or the least personal belief exemption rate:
Look honey ... a 1.7% and a 3.26% ... and over here ... a 9% ... wow ... so many choices to choose from
Bizarro world
Schools won’t allow a kid to even bring a peanut butter sandwich, for fear that some kid might have a peanut allergy.
But allowing dozens of un-vaxed kids in posing real threats?
Sure. Why not?
Here’s a question. What if the school accedes to this father’s demand and does require all other children to be immunized. What then, if there are others in the school with similar ailments and no ability to be immunized? Their reasons are just as valid as his, aren’t they? Are they to be kept out of school to keep this father’s “herd immunity” theory intact?
Of course...but, in the meantime, do you know the hoops you have to navigate to bring a pet into this country?
I agree with you.
We have illegal kids flooding over the border on a constant basis. This is a child at risk no matter how completely Americans are treated with vaccines.
Disease is why we used to make immigrants come into the country after they had health checks for public health reasons. We don’t have a public heath mentality anymore with open borders. The race card trumps the survival card.
I’d think that if some of the others are illegals’ children, they get automatic immunity from any rule, law or requirements. They just have to show up and say “No Habla”.....
Rhett can’t be immunized. His chemo treatments have left his body in too fragile a condition for now.
My first thought was this question.
Does that mean the school will bar illegal alien children from attending? Remember, this is California.
If my kid was in pubic...oops public..school in CA I’d be more worried about the diseases the illegals are spreading in the schools.
IMO, considering what bizarre-o land the CA schools are, he should home school. We all know the school will consider the “rights” of the other parents and the illegals to be a higher priority.
With the diseases the illegals are bringing into CA, there are already serious outbreaks of nasty stuff. The new age parents without vaccinated children are going to pay a heavy price before this is over. All they will all be whining “why me?”.
If he has such a weak immune system, measles may be the least of his problems. Flu, colds, other viruses spread in schools as well. It sounds like the child is too weak to be in school.
The idiots that accept and use idiotic idioms like “herd immunity” should consider themselves left behind in the ice age ... or warming age .... I forget which danger I’m in now.
My younger brother came home from the hospital as a newborn (46 years ago) and within a day or so came down with chicken pox. He didn’t get it from Mom (she had them as a child). 46 years ago.. we didn’t have as many illegals. Thus, there isn’t a guarantee that this little boy won’t pick something up “naturally”. A flu, pink eye, strep throat... all of those conditions could kill him. I just don’t understand why his parents don’t home school him or use some sort of online schooling until his immune system is healthy.
At this time, his son can't be vaccinated due to cancer treatments and effects of chemo. The little one is in remission but his immune system is weak.
Also, after having worked in CA schools, I know for a fact that illegals send their kids to school with no vaccinations. They simply stall the schools saying they'll do it but they don't. They lie about everything....address, immunizations, eligibility, etc.
Rhett should be at home doing school. If his immune system is compromised, public school is the last place he should be.
Wrong. Parents can get waivers allowing their children not to be vaccinated on “religious grounds.” However, you don’t really have to prove such an exemption, as evident in CA where the unit-vaccination movement is strong.
Obama also gave a blanket waiver from mandatory vaccinations to the tens of thousands of illegal aliens who flooded our borders in 2014. The children in this massive invasion have had NO vaccinations and are in virtually every school district in America. Is it any wonder measles is killing children from coast to coast?
Since his son has not been vaccinated, his son would be also barred. Oh wait, did he want his son to be granted an exception? Does he think he is the only one who needs an exception?
Bingo! Quite a selfish ‘tude by the parent(s).
Since the child is 6, he has had all the major vaccines already, as they give some vaccines even before a newborn goes home from the hospital now.
With Leukemia why is the kid even in school. Home school or tutor would be the wisest choice.
Does the father take the kid to chunky cheese for his BD?
Does he take him out in public any where? Germs and viruses abound on all surfaces and linger for days. Doctors offices are the worst places to pick them up. Even hospitals. Every drippy nosed, coughing person has touched or sneezed over those germ laden mags they have out for you to read. The toys at a Peds office are not dipped in bleach water every half hr and carry a ton of germs. And not 1 of those sneezing, coughing people are being asked to wear masks.
Which is why as a Senior I don’t see any one but a Internist who does NOT treat children. Adults are bad enough, children are worse about spreading germs and viruses.
NO LOGIC is being used.
Herd immunity is a useful public health planning model, along with other tools, but not intended to be used by the general public to decide of their kids should get vaccines.
