The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
We had 3” rain accumulation from two days rainfall, mostly(90%) last night. We needed that badly. The hill had turn to sand dune again and was difficult to traverse.
Got a little work done on the deck in between rain showers over the weekend. I was hoping to be finished but the weather didn’t cooperate with me.
The garden is looking good. We’re eating salad greens and radishes, cucumbers are up and needing to be thinned out a bit, tomato plants are starting to bloom and it looks like the potatoes are not far behind.
The horse poo experiment is working well so far. I’ve spent very little time weeding. I hope that trend continues.
I have a feeling what you call "a little work", I would call a lot of work.
It really was just a little. 7 rail posts and 4 1/2 sections of rail. No spindles, no rail cap.
After picking my tools up for the third time I gave up.
The sun is shining today, so I’ll hit it again after I get home from the salt mine.
I hope this inline feeder works well. I will find out in a few months. It is a 2 gallon EZ-Flo and seems to be working ok so far, but my plants are still small and need another few weeks to see significant growth. I could not find any wheat hay to top my layer of ground cloth/fabric so I am using a red hard wood mulch. Hope it works well. I have all my tomatoes panted (35) and still need to put in a couple of zukes and pepper plants. I may also plant a couple of watermelon and acorn squash. I will have to see how things are going. But I will have to do so soon as they take a while to develop.
What kind of tomatoes, Red?
You have to warn gardeners that okra grows big/huge with tree like trunks! At the end of the season they need to be cut down with a saw or pulled up with an ATV or lawn tractor.
The feeder should work out great. It may need a bit of tweaking of the dilution of the fert, but once you get it figured out it should be good to go for many seasons.
We are coming back there to visit this week, so I added a timer to an outlet that I had been using manually, and checking others to insure they are functioning properly. After doing all this prep work, we will get rain the entire time we are gone.
You and I do not live on the same planet. I don't know what I got yesterday since the rain gauge had fallen over, but it poured all day and I mean poured. I righted the rain gauge yesterday evening and got 2 full inches between then and now.
The pepper growing in the pot of “hot pepper mix” is 2 and 1/2 inches long. Do you have a suggestion as to when I should pick that pepper? Since I don't know what kind it is except it is hot, what would you do? Leave it there to see how long it grows, or pick it?

I’m not that good at delaying gratification. I would have used that pepper by now. That’s about the size they are when I buy them at the store.
I planted 8 of my favorite Marions, 4 Marizano Plums, 4 Arkansas Tralvers, 4 Rutgers, 8 Red Beefsteak, 6 regular plums, and 1 Black Prince. Just trying a few I have no experience in growing to see how they do in the Mississippi heat this summer.
10 miles is a different planet when it come to weather. All one has the do is watch the radar to see that.
I am not using the feeder yet although it is set up and been tested. I just want plane water to get these plantings going. It has worked great in my test. Once the plants get established I will let it feed my tomatoes about once a week - lets see how it goes.
Okra: even if you don’t eat it, you can plant it for shade.
I was trying to focus on tomatoes that work best in salsa (plums and hearts), but things got 'out of control' with seed swaps and such, so now I have roughly 400 different kinds of tomato seed on hand, but I can only grow out 100 varieties on our temporary property. The ones with odd names are catching my attention...I am growing out 'Sirloin of Zebra', Cow's T*t, Monkey *ss, and Grinch Cherry (GWR). There there's the peppers and beans, which are pushing the 'collect them all' button, as well.
What variety is that? I have only planted clemson spineless (if it is not broke, don’t fix it and heirloom to boot). Clemson spineless has yellow blossoms with ruby throat, but same beauty - I wonder if I read one time that okra is kin to hibiscus. Might also be related to cotton.
Sorry I don’t know the variety. I tried to access my photbucket account for pictures I took of mine a couple of years ago but could not log in. Mine were a pale yellow with a wonderful deep crimson center. Beautiful flower.
