The Big Fat Lie We’ve Been Fed About Our Diet
The Fiscal Times ^ | May 22, 2014 | Maureen Mackey

Be honest: That bacon, egg and cheese breakfast you scarfed down the other day was so delicious you’d love to have it for breakfast every morning. But like so many other health-conscious, weight-watching Americans, you just won’t allow yourself that indulgence. Instead, you opt for the usual low-fat, low-calorie and (oh-so-bland) oatmeal.

Good for you!! You're doing something right.

I began my comments on this thread at post 27 as follows:

"I think we are all a bit different. If you're healthy and trim, there probably isn't any need to change what you're doing.

P.S. My wife loves brussel sprouts. As for me, I eat them when I'm told to eat them. And, I thank her for making them. That's all I have to say about brussel sprouts. ;-)

I’ve been on this earth 54 years (55 in June!) and right now I’m 190 ell bees and should dump 10 or 15 and get to 180 or 175. I just feel better at that weight. I do eat a lot of rabbit food (thanks to Mrs. Doomonyou wanting to keep me around a while.) I am a meat and potatoes guy at heart, we have a half a beef in the freezer every year and go through most of it, (home grown on the family ranch, we pay cut and wrap), but we eat lots of chicken and fish (and various amounts of venison and other game,) and a beer or glass of wine with dinner. My problem is office body. Not enough exercise. I think just eating your veggies, some fruit and meat, coupled with some exercise, you’ll be fine. Want to lose weight? Just burn more calories than you take in, it ain’t rocket science.

Try some hot sauce on them.

Thanks. I’ll do that. I like hot sauce. And, the sprouts are probably good for me.

Thanks. I really am going to try that. I don't really hate brussel sprouts - they just don't turn me on much.

But, there isn't enough hot sauce to get me to eat liver. We ate it occasionally when I was a kid, but I never did really like it. I don't know why we were eating it, but I assume my mother thought it was good for us because it was full of iron and such. She might have been right, but I'm done with that source of iron.

All in all, I eat pretty well. I even have some pizza every six months or so. I'm just more careful now about eating a balanced diet and not eating more than I really need. I'm never famished anymore.

But that’s it for the day. LOL

Same here. My breakfasts are usually huge. 2 to 3 eggs, bacon, toast, hash browns and often what the military calls SOS over a biscuit or toast. But often I don’t have another full meal until tomorrow morning. I do light snacks or nothing after breakfast.

Right. A good b’fast and light snacking during the day. It’s better to eat light rather than three meals esp. a heavy one in the evening. Here in Australia we have tea around four with tea and sandwiches. Then a light fare later in the evening.

Mmm .... grits ... like liquid popcorn.

Good Sunday breakfast is corned beef hash and grits and coffee.

Obesity did not originate in the 80’s, I think it started with baby boomers being fed extra well by moms who had been through The Great Depression and WWII. A chubby baby was a healthy baby, and all that. But by the 80’s, fast food had been around awhile and changed a lot of eating habits, no argument there.

I have my Mom’s diaries from the 30’s, and she chronicled her life to include her shopping lists and meals she prepared. Read any recipe book from way back and the portions were much smaller, though the ingredients were not necessarily “heart-healthy” by today’s standards. Mom did serve very well-balanced meals.

I think their lives were much more physically demanding than now. My grandmother kept a two story house spotless for my grandfather and great-grandfather by herself well into old age, no maids, no Swiffers, no clothes dryers, no dishwasher.

I agree with you that fat is not the main culprit, and we also can’t forget genetics.

This is very exciting, and I hope Americans catch on quickly.

I am 6 foot and I got up to a little over 200 pounds 35 years ago but I was working hard so I was not fat, now I eat anything I want but just not as much and stay around 165

I am an 81 year old smoker(always slim, though), and here I am. It IS a crap shoot.

You are a lot older than I am then ha,ha, I am only almost 78, I also smoke and eat anything I want which is biscuits and gravy and beans and chili and Mexican food in general but to stay down to 165 I just don`t eat as much, it is hard especially on thanksgiving when I get stuffed before I get all I want.

I cut out drinking and cut out women but I ain`t going to cut out smoking or I would be cutting out paper dolls.

You haven’t ever had my oatmeal.

Nothing enough butter, cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, chopped dried apricots, pecans and/or walnuts can’t make edible.

Bacon bits optional.
