Be honest: That bacon, egg and cheese breakfast you scarfed down the other day was so delicious youd love to have it for breakfast every morning. But like so many other health-conscious, weight-watching Americans, you just wont allow yourself that indulgence. Instead, you opt for the usual low-fat, low-calorie and (oh-so-bland) oatmeal.

“I know a lot of old, fat, smokers who are living on the beach in Florida.
“I pretty much do what I want. It all seems like a crap shoot.”.
I am an 81 year old smoker(always slim, though), and here I am. It IS a crap shoot.

One day I believe that the cause(s) of cancer will be discovered, but most of what I see now seems to be speculation.

I stand corrected. I was in grade school in the 80s and remember it being bandied about as the de facto health standard.

Perhaps you would prefer the article in the Wall Street Journal that has more background information and makes an excellent case for bacon as a healthy choice (http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303678404579533760760481486#)

Eighty one? You post so much younger. I was guessing a curmudgeonly sixty year old.

Learn about nutrition and try to get to the gym everyday. I'd love to know how much stock you have in any of the national chain gyms or "nutrition" stores.
Seriously, you sound like one of those paid spokespersons on TV hawking some law firm or other...........

Are butter, cheese and steak really bad for you?Yes, in so many ways. I refer you to the writings of Caldwell Esselstyn and Dr. Joel Fuhrman, and T. Colin Campbell.

"youd be interested. People are soooo desperate to believe that bacon is a health food and cholesterol should be a beverage. You have to laugh." Are you still in a bad mood? I hope things get better for you.

It was well-entrenched by the time Ronnie took office. There’s no way he could have gotten rid of it in 8 years even with a full-court press - which he didn’t have the scientific backup to attempt.

Secondly, why exactly do you claim I am in a bad mood? Because I dared post on a food/nutrition thread with some info you don't want to hear?

Good genes are primary. The women(!) on my mother’s side of the family live well into their 90’s - smoking, drinking, overweight & having a high old time. I hope to do the same.

Eat All the Fried Chicken You Want!
Not a good idea. The culprit in arteriosclerosis is actually an essential amino acid, methionine, and had it been isolated and identified in the early 20th century when extensive research on both cholesterol and proteins was being done, cholesterol as possibly related to widespread heart disease would have been a minor footnote in the history of medicine.
If interested you can read about it
here (NYT), The Fall and Rise of Kilmer McCully, or
here (half.com), "Beyond Cholesterol" by Raymond and Gruberg (out of print).

This is why I switched ALL my frying to lard a few years ago. And it tastes a lot better, too.
I read the whole article -- MUSIC TO MY EARS. It's amazing -- the meals recommended is almost the way I eat, though I think I'll switch to fat milk (I drink skim now). FWIW, a few years shy of 60 I am only an inch larger in pant size than I was as a trim teen. I also exercise, though.
EXCELLENT ARTICLE! And I highly recommend switching from shortening to lard in all applications. The taste is AMAZINGLY better.
