Here's How Long That Teen Would Have to Pee in the Portland Reservoir to Make It Unsafe to Drink
slate ^ | April 17, 2014 | Laura Helmuth

Posted on 04/19/2014 12:54:24 PM PDT by Michael.SF.

How many times would that teenager have to pee in a Portland reservoir to produce a urine concentration approaching the EPA’s limit for nitrates in drinking water? About 3,333 times.

But of course urine is 95 percent water. (If you’re ever trapped in rubble after a natural disaster, go ahead and drink it.) Only about 2 percent of urine is nitrogen-rich urea. That means he’d have to urinate 166,666 times for the concentration of urea to approach that of the EPA’s limit for nitrates in drinking water.

Since most animals, including idiot teenaged show-offs, take about 21 seconds to urinate, that means he’d have to urinate constantly for 3,500,000 seconds, or about 40 days. Hopefully, he’d have friends constantly supplying him with tasty Portland microbrews.

This is a follow-up, original story posted here: Teen caught urinating in reservoir (Portland Ore

About 8 ounces of pee in 38,000,000 gallons of water and they drained the reservoir!

Maybe they should have just sent it to California!

The EPA could care less about facts, that’s been apparent for the last 40 plus years.

Survivalists drink their own. If the boy was on drugs he might make someone high not sick.

What of the bears or racoons pee or who knows what can get into that water. Don’t they filter/sanitize it before it goes into the system?

Unless he also has an STD.

He should be forced to pay for the costs of having done this. Not necessarily the water itself, as that would be more than what anybody could afford, but the labour involved in emptying and refilling.

In general, but not in all cases, urine is exceptionally clean.

Soldiers pee in a fellow soldiers wound if no pure water is available to clean it.

Sweat is an order of magnitude more filthy than urine.

Don’t forget fish, frogs, and birds using the reservoir as their personal toilet/bidet combo.

Unless he also has an STD.

Doesn't make any difference. How many nasty viruses and germs do you think end up the reservoir from natural causes? Like when a rabid raccoon stops by to have a drink and wash his hands.

He should be forced to pay for the costs of having done this.

No he shouldn't.

The reservoir should never have been drained in the first place, as the amount of urine was insignificant, and in reality, not problematic.

The people who made this decision are idiots.

Sure, but if they didn’t drain it some bloodsucking parasite (I mean a lawyer) would surely find some sick person who drank the water and file a lawsuit.

You are right on that part.

Alternatively, they could have pumped the water back to the filtration plant and 'refiltered' (or retreated) the water. Also they could have send it to a secondary water system for agriculture or ground watering purposes.

Draining it back into the local river system makes no sense at all.

I'm curious, not even fresh mountain water is recommended for drinking prior to some sort of purification. Isn't the water from this reservoir processed thru some sort of purification system?

There's more to this story........and it's likely based on BS
