The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
“the edges of my mouth where your top lip and bottom meet, will be all red, and hurt from them stretching it..”
Me, too.
“but I think it’s that I’m not taking as big bites as they are.
Me, too.
“That was one thing I liked about places in Europe where you can sit there eating for two hours, and nobody gives you the bum’s rush..”
Me, too. Lunch in Europe is two hours, one course after another. I would always think, well, I’ll be going back to the US with grab as you go for lunch.
“I was going to stab her with my fork, and strangle her with my rosary.”
I really like you. We could eat like we eat and you can attack the waitresses. :o) :o)
She really was the most awful waitress, ever..She was reaching over my plate (from the right) to clear the person to the left of me's plate. That really was the last straw for me after her trying to grab my plate twice while I was eating off of it. Never get between me and a rare steak..
Does the sun rise in the East? Of course, I forget stuff all the time, even seeds. I have to make a cope of all orders, and put them in a folder I keep for online and catalog orders.
When they come in, I check them off. Otherwise I’d never know what I had even ordered, let alone whether they came in or not.LOL
Have I mentioned, that I don’t like to transplant stuff? Once I have the seeds started indoors, however, I have to transplant most stuff.
Have never ever transplanted lettuce. I do put it in long rectangular pots indoors to grow stuff, but then when the weather gets nice, I just park them outdoors on top of the retaining wall.
It's only 22 miles from me, and I have friends and relatives there, so, I get over there once or twice a month.
How does it compare to Gruene Tx ?
In Fredericksburg, they roll up the streets about 6:30, except if there's something special going on.
We got a dusting of snow last night. It got up to about 34 degrees and the sun came out, so the snow melted. We will be back down to the 20’s tonight. Then we are supposed to have at least a week of nicer temps.
I’ll get some more digging done and rye turned under. I have some potatoes out on the table in the light so they can be ready for the April 1 plant date, if the weather feels right.
Bet you got more than shovel hands. A few sore muscles here and there maybe. You made a lot of progress. I can’t do that much all at once, I’d have to stay in bed for a week to recuperate.LOL
Sounds like me. I have done fair up until this month. I ordered some stuff, and then the trip to Walmart. I have so many seeds that I didn’t even get to plant last year, I am trying to make do with what I have.
I did buy some of the 20 cent packs from Walmart to replace some of the seeds that Hubby used and emptied the packet last year.
“I have to make a cope of all orders, and put them in a folder I keep for online and catalog orders.”
I make a copy of orders also or stick their email about the purchase in an “Orders” folder in email. That’s where I found the order from Park Seed and still had to go to their website to look up one plant to see if that jogged my memory of the order and then I knew I ordered those and why. I’ve had to go back to printed out orders at times to see when I ordered something if I thought it should be here by now.
cope = copy
Eyes and brain are tired need to go to sleep now, I guess.
Talk to you later.
“Have I mentioned, that I dont like to transplant stuff? Once I have the seeds started indoors, however, I have to transplant most stuff. Have never ever transplanted lettuce.”
Well, I’m still learning and carrots and lettuce from now on get direct planting in final container.
We are thinking of going to Fredricksburg to see whatever they are famous for. We find Texas to be hard to find good destinations for 3 day weekends or mini vacations. We just can’t afford to go to the Rockies in Co this year. We need to stick close by this time.
There's all the German houses, and food. There's wineries out the wazoo. There's the Museum of the Pacific War, Fort Martin Scott, tons of shops, Dooley's five and dime store..cash or checks only, no credit cards, Pioneer Museum..usually have a nice garden going. Not too far from Luckenbach, TX...
We may do a mini there. When we go to New Braunfels, it is a 3hr 15min ride, so add to that and it is not bad drive.
Oh, and there’s this...I would like to go over there today, but I promised the girl next door, I’d give her a ride to a party.

Sounds like we would have to dig out the check book for Fredricksburg, no debits cards at several places.
Hi greeneyes and everyone! Checking in late!
Rainy and cold today.
All of my ordered seeds have arrived. I still have a couple of live plants ordered which I’m waiting on from Burpee.
I sprouted some of my seeds, including the Tbone squash! Other sprouts are flax, Atkins Tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peas, and a couple of green bean varieties among others. They really need to get their little toes into some dirt cups, but I’ve been buried under some other projects. *sigh*
As per last year, I have tried sprouting parsley seeds, but they have not responded yet. So, even if I wanted to have parsley sprouts for sandwiches, not happening! It is still too early to tell whether my parsley plant survived the last freeze. I’m thinking it didn’t.
Darlin is suggesting that I concentrate in my experiments on some root veggies this season because I am truly clueless about most of them. As you know I’ve been working with walking onions and a grocery store eating onion. Darlin and I saw some onion sets which are beginning to sprout in a bin at the grocery store, so we bought a few of those to also play with. I have some Asian radishes and some short carrots I want to try this season. Perhaps some beats as well.
I saw a friend at the grocery store who sells pecans from her nut crop each year and she assured me I’m not too late this year to fertilize our trees.
I reported last week, I think, that we obtained 3 tomato plants from Lowes. 2 are heirloom, and another is a hybrid Darlin likes. We are excited because they are preparing to bloom! We have not planted them because we are still bringing them in at night, as the temps are dangerously close to freezing.
Happy gardening to all!
TEXOKIE, Glad to hear from you where you are with gardening so far.
I’ve got seedlings up in 21 cups under the grow lamp and that means more than 21 containers because there are several plants in each cup. I don’t have that many containers left. I need some more 3 gallon nursery type black pots as they are cheapest and I think will be large enough for what’s growing but that isn’t exactly right since there are a number of tomatoes. Have to rethink pots. I have some big enough for tomato plants but I don’t remember where I got them - maybe the Mega Garden store. They evidently weren’t terribly expensive because I have a lot of those. Need to look at my orders on computer and see where I got those pots.
I only have one more really big bag of potting soil mix and that isn’t enough so I’ll have to buy smaller bags I can carry this time.
It is overcast again today so no sun. I need sun for all those plants outside now.
JRandomFreeper is supposed to get internet today so I expect him to be all over this thread before the day is over. :o)
Glad you checked in. I was thinking about you last night, and wondering how things were weather & garden wise at your house.
Have you done any more on the Craftsman Work Table today?
