The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

“I wonder if we can mix neem oil in the ground around the squash plants? Anyone ever done that?”

Now there’s a concept! Sounds interesting!

It's just a tiny little submersible pump hooked to a hose. Pump goes in bucket, hose hangs over top of the water and oxygenates it as it sprays in.

Do you mean to tell me that the cubs got into the garage, even with the door closed? I have to tell you that having bears visit my garden would make me feel very insecure. LOL

Thanks for the pics. Glad you are the one taking them and not me.LOL

When I started this earlier today, the water was a light tan, and you could see through it. It's very dark colored now, and you can't see through it at all. Something's reproducing. ;)

My wife thinks that is so cute! Whenever we travel to the mountains, she wants to see a bear in the wild. Not me!

We have watched the 3 since they were the size of puppies but the bigger they get the more food they need and the more destructive they get. The big door to the garage was open as it serves as our Mud Room when we are in the yard or garden but we will have to keep it closed now. I have been out of commission this afternoon as I have a medical procedure at the hospital early tomorrow morning but I did get all the strawberry plants pilled and dumped over the hill as they were infected with some virus. I’ll plant garlic in that area next month. Corn is done and going on the compost pile but the cucumbers are still producing and make great snacks when I sit out there and soak up the sun...

I decided to see how my sugar beets did as a regular root vegetable. The answer is: OUTSTANDING!!!!!!

They’re sweet and beet-y and delicious. I’m adding them to my list of favorite veggies. This time I just cleaned and roasted one of the little ones in the oven. I have 2 bigger ones and a few more little ones. Next, I might try using them for a sweet potato cobbler or something.

So many possibilities . . .

I am interested in herbal medicines/gardens/etc

Passion Flower, besides being pretty has medicinal uses, too.

My CVS has lots of Mexican herbal teas/remedies, but I see they don't have them online. There is one called 9 azahares (9 blossoms) that has calmative, relaxing effects.

I used to make catnip, valerian root, vervain, skullcap tea for cramps when I was in high school. It was very effective.

You could always just make a smoothie using rose hips as one of the ingredients. Another thing to remember, is that dandelion greens also have Vitamin C and other good stuff. They tend to grow without effort on your part, and are one of the first things to green up in the spring.
The smoothie idea sounds great! I did use a few dandelion greens last spring, but I could have used so many more. Whole yard was packed! We live elsewhere now, and I see a few; I don't think, however, the people before us sprayed which is great. And, yes, 2 glasses of wine.............. and I'd forget my question anyway... :)

There are so many from overnight, they started foaming. You can see how dark the brew is.

Here is some of the biochar and broken pottery that will go into a small area. I will pre-load the bio-char (low temp charcoal that I made) with the bacteria that I grew last night and turn all of that under.

My goal is to make 'terra preta' that the ancients in South America used to turn unproductive land into some of the most productive land on the planet.

Thanks for the info on the teas/remedies, sockmonkey. I’ve not ever raised any of those, so they need to go on my growing list!

Wow, I am impressed. Now I feel like a lazy bum because I sometimes find it a magor effort to make time to open up a can of "Shake and Feed" and sprinkle it around my plants.

I was born on this property, and it's always been a sandy wasteland of grassburrs. It will take the rest of my life, but I will leave a legacy of deep, fertile soil here. It's a holy mission and I'm a fanatic. ;)

Making low temp charcoal this morning in a makeshift pyrolyzer. Problem is that I can only make a little over a quart of charcoal at a time, and I need cubic feet of the stuff.

I've got my scouts looking for junk I can build a larger one with. My junk pile came up short this time.

Added advantage is that it makes the greenies crazy, since I'm releasing all that carbon into the air.

You work making fertile soil and I'll stick with potting soil mix.

Rightly, I just found out we have a robbery problem in this county and you need to know it.

They are targeting older citizens. They spot an older person in a car and follow that person home so they know where the house is. Then, one of them comes to the door with fake credentials and says he's from (any) utility company and wants to look at the back yard to see if trees need to be trimmed. The older person takes the man to the backyard and while they are out there, the other criminal goes in the house and steals certain items and takes them out of the house. Then the older person and the fake utility man come back in the house and the fake guy leaves.

This has happened in Conroe and in The Woodlands. Don't let any so called utility person get you out of your house. Send any such person on his way, then call the cops.

I don't think they would try that in here as they would have to get through the gate but they could follow another car in. These townhomes are stuck together and out in the open, they are not separate houses so I don't think robbers would try that in here.

In each case, it was an elderly woman they robbed. Elderly women tend to trust people, big mistake. I, however, do not fall in that trust category. During the day, my metal front door is open so the doggie can see what is happening outside. There is a glass door in front of the metal door and it stays locked. I can see the whole person who steps up to that glass door and I'm not opening it. The robber can take his utility credentials and get the hell away from my door while I am dialing 911. Think I will put my Ruger 38 special on the small antique desk close to the front door. Picking that up will scare the freak robber to death - good.

Can you imagine doing this to little old ladies? Following them home, then using this scam to rob them? They are taking the sterling silver and jewelry - things the guy inside the house can quickly get. I saw a film of one house after the robbery and this little old lady opened the drawer where the sterling silver was and it's bare. I've got sterling silver and my jewelry is such, he could take a trip around the world. However, the jewelry is not out in the open and he would never find it. I have it in that special place because it is so valuable.

I hope they catch these robbers of old ladies.
