Free Republic | September 13, 2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/20/2013 12:16:53 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Yes, I think Walmart has a wrong price on the 4 ft. or the 2 ft., as they shouldn’t be priced so close together.

On the two foot, it said, you save $6.27 or something like that..It disappeared when I went back. On the four foot, it said,:
$52.60 List Price: $99.99
You Save: $47.39 (47%)

Of course, I have no idea where I'm going to set up the 4 foot one..Four feet is pretty big.

I just looked and I’ve had 2 1/2 inches. I poured that out to measure what happens today as we have 60% chance of rain.

I wasn’t immediately aware of my neck when I woke up this morning so it is better. I’ll still use the cushion today to give the neck help to hold up my head. I can have bunches of things to do but when the neck goes, nothing gets done unless it’s on the computer. Thursday evening, I ordered an Italian sausage pizza delivered and I don’t have to do anything in the kitchen except stick some of it in the micro and I have food without bothering my neck.

If your neck can’t hold up your head, you’re in trouble. I think necks should have been made of strong metal since they are so important.

Has your wife had her other hand fixed? I’m glad you are moving better and hope by now you are actually sleeping in the bed instead of a chair.

“Of course, I have no idea where I'm going to set up the 4 foot one..Four feet is pretty big.”

Mine is on the floor in front of a door to a closet where winter coats are kept. I have a doggie fence in front of it so my Yorkie can't reach the plants and chew them up.

I'm through with the grow lamp right now but haven't broken it down and put it up as it's fine just sitting there out of the way of main traffic.

Oh wow! Thanks for the pix and extra dimension of info on the hats the good guys and bad guys are wearing.

Since we are not trying for white potatoes (we have a lonely pot of experimental sweet potatoes,) so far I don’t think we’ve seen the potato beetle larvae. But I can see the point of possible confusion. Thank you so much for the alert.

I went to your link, and that is really slick! I love your idea of doing pots in an area of the yard before actually doing the tilling etc.

We have a couple of potted areas for convenience and control of watering, soil, etc, but had not thought of it being as trying out of the microclimate. We have a garden patch in a tried part of the yard which has been doing a good job of producing okra and sunflowers! Those would not fit in a small greenhouse, but do require the full-on outdoors. But I can see great benefit for the other veggies having the greenhouse covers like at your link as an option.

Thanks for the timing info, sockmonkey. I guess that means I need to get into gear and do some soil prep for the onions that just came in!

Are those radishes like the daikon radishes? I LOVE daikon! RECIPE ALERT: I like to cut it up into about two inch sections, peel it, and then make large matchsticks. They are wonderful as raw veggies with dip. THey are also very good grated and steamed. Leftovers go well into a veggie soup.

I have the daikon seeds, but have not had the courage to try planting them yet. Please keep us informed on your minowase.

Carol’s other hand is scheduled for Oct 8. She got the stitches out Tuesday.

Before my accident, in early May I injured my neck, not serious, just a pain. After my regular Dr ran Xrays then MRI, he sent me to a Pain specialist. Dr wanted to do a procedure injecting a med into the affected area, if that didn’t work, wanted to burn the nerve out, then if that didn’t work, put me on pain meds for a while. I told him no way, and left. Bought a $20 Tens unit online and used it for about a month. That was all I needed. Instead of some Tens treatments, he wanted to rape my insurance with his high priced procedures. I got better just in time to wreck my scooter and my lung, ribs, shoulder, and wrist!

As I said earlier, we will help in any way you need, in the garden, or bring you some Southern cooking, or drive you to the Dr. Just let us know.

Oh wow. That had to be a great disappointing thing to see. The maters are gorgeous, as are the cucumbers. Thanks for the pics.

Hi Mad Dawgg! Glad to see you on the garden thread! I’ve had a lot of help from folks here too. I’ve been learning so much!

I’ve not been having very good luck with the beans which are named on the packet “garden beans.” I have had some good production out of a couple of black turtle bean plants after some difficulties early on in the season. I had to start them over a couple of times. I got those seeds out of the bulk black turtle beans I bought at the health food store. What kind of pole beans are you planning to try?

Thanks for the book link, Marcella. I’m very interested in that topic. I looked at the Amazon page for it and they list some other related books which also sound very good. I feel as though you found the treasure trove of info I’ve been looking for! Thanks again.

I was just looking at your pictures again, Applegate, of the confusing potato beetle larvae and lady bug pupae, and was wondering if you could recommend your go-to reference for garden good guys and pests. WITH PICTURES!! LOL!

Are those radishes like the daikon radishes?

Yes, Minowase are a type of Daikon. Saw this little blurb on google search:

A staple of Japanese and Korean cuisine, daikon radishes are unbelievably fast- growing—even in the cool, shortening days of fall,..

The onion pods that you sent me that I almost killed and then tried to rescue are doing great in the compost potting soil mix. From nothing to 4" in a week. I don't think you are going to have to send me any more.

Egg cartons are filled with potting soil for planting tomorrow. I'm re-skinning the plastic on the cold frame and getting that set up. I had to move the oregano and thyme around in the herb garden for space for the cold frame. Today will be a busy day.

Herb garden: What is that? “I don't have no herb garden.”

I don't have a single herb. I haven't done herbs. I have just bought that book by the MD Anderson research doctor that tells me which herbs are good for what medical condition and how to take them.

So, I know I need herbs. I've got a planter attached to a brick wall in the garden and there is nothing in it. The front part gets sun for awhile but the back part barely gets sun at all due to being close to the roofed deck, the shade hits that spot first as the sun moves across - it's only sunny there for while in the mornings.

Went out and measured that planter. It's 8 feet long and 14 inches wide. Didn't think to measure the depth but it's deep enough for herb roots.

So, to all of you, which herbs could grow okay in the back half portion that doesn't get sun all day, just a while in the mornings? Are there any herbs that would grow there? Those that must have more sun will be in the front half of the planter.

Thanks for the information on the daikon growth. Maybe now I’ll have the courage to try planting some. I have a nice big empty pot I think might accommodate a couple of them.

You are welcome for the recipe alert! I like the mildness of the daikon. Once in a while I’ll get one with a little fire, but pretty much they are radish flavor without too much bite!

Refurbished cold frame, loaded with thermal mass (water bottles) and ready to go for the winter. Fall tomatoes are on the right side, just outside of the cold frame.
