Nearly half of the New Testament is a forgery, according to a provocative new book which charges that the Apostle Paul authored only a fraction of letters attributed to him, and the Apostle Peter just wrote nothing.

Written by Bart Ehrman, a former evangelical Christian and now agnostic professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, the book claims to unveil "one of the most unsettling ironies of the early Christian tradition:" the use of deception to promote the truth.

"The Bible not only contains untruths of accidental mistakes. It also contains what almost anyone today would call lies," Ehrman writes in "Forged: Writing in the Name of God -- Why the Bible’s Authors Are Not Who We Think They Are."....

Unlike Paul, Peter, a fisherman raised in rural Palestine, was most certainly illiterate. So was the Apostle John, who could have not written the Gospel bearing his name, said Ehrman.

Another interesting book, “Biblical Nonsense: A Review of the Bible for Doubting Christians,” by Jason Long. Primarily regarding the Old Testament. Makes one wonder how anyone could possibly still believe the mythologies conjured up 4000 years ago.

These sorts of intellectual fistfights have been going on among biblical scholars since long before the days of the LXX. As with sausage making, they are best not conducted in front of the unwashed Christian masses. (Jewish scholars, OTOH, will go round and round on this stuff ‘till the cows come home.)

That’s what they told me in college in the 80s. Now, I’m hearing in my Bible study group that new scholarship indicates that the New Testament is in the correct order after all, with Matthew being the first to be written. Also, in college, my professor said John was supposedly written long after the others, like a generation or two. Now, scholars are taking that back, too.

Why? I don’t know. I’m just standing by, with popcorn.

Thanks Renfield. I'd be amazed if anyone were surprised by the fact that, in antiquity, writers wrote under well-known pen-names, and that includes the writers of most (or all) of the Gospels. A well-known example from the Middle Ages is the "Donation of Constantine" forgery, hoaxed as a supporting argument to get a French king to sign documents that he and his heirs and assigns forever were subservient to the Pope. I have never claimed that Zul-Qarnain *is* the historical Alexander the Great. I don't know why your move to agree with me in this is considered a rebuttal... The argument is then that the Qur'anic story is clearly taken from the legends about Alexander. There are many many details of the Qur'an account which are nearly verbatim to be found in the Alexander legends. Conclusion: Zul-Qarnain clearly is the Alexander the Great of the legend stories. And because the Qur'an presents the material from the legends as if this were history, it shows that Muhammad could not distinguish between legends and history when he incorporated this material in the Qur'an. This is evidence that the Qur'an is not of divine origin.
