If free passage through the canal were threatened, would you favor or oppose U.S. military action to keep it open?
Oppose Rather than put Americans in harms way, lets once and for all make the U.S. independent of foreign oil.
Undecided Im concerned about what effect a closed Suez would have on our economy, but Im not sure Id want to risk American lives.
Favor We must not let this strategically important route fall into the wrong hands. Do whatever is necessary to keep it open.

Yes, I remember 56/57. Hope they don’t scuttle ships again.
“One ship sunk in the right place...”
IIRC, something like that happened. A blockade, I think.
I remember it as a mess.
No, the Suez is much more important to Europe and SW Asia than to the US. Tired of playing the world’s policeman, let the whiny Euros defend it.
Put more American lives in the hands of a weak resident obama? Not now, not ever...
Why not get troops from the countries which USE the canal most often. Do we use it THAT much?
If the Canal closes you have global calamity. Anybody from the Right voting not to protect the canal are living in an alternate universe.
Three words: Enviornmental Protection Act
The Congress and EPA/President decide when and where we can drill on US soil.
Drill here. Drill now. Refine here. Refine now.
Let the moslems kill themselves. Stand back and let them.
You make a good argument for not defending the canal. If it only takes one ship sunk to close it, and if it is not a “critical” supply line, then do not defend it. If it is useful to other countries, let them defend it.
Would you explain why that is so?

I refer to him as Carter 44.
This would not be worth a drop of American blood. Let those who want to sell us oil deliver it to our ports.
Couldn’t agree more. And, if they want to buy gain from us it’s $200.00 a bushel. You know, if we had started drilling when Bush 43 came into office we would have full skill production going right about now.
What do I know?
“Would you explain why that is so?”
Nearly 5 percent of the worlds daily output of oil travels through the area. If the Suez were ever closed, ships trying to make it from the Middle East to Europe would have to travel around Africa to complete their journey. On top of delays in supply, the cost of shipping would also increase. As a result, the price of crude would surely skyrocket.
If you don’t think that will have an impact here on the U.S. then you do not know commerce.
Do you think Oil is the only thing that travels through the Canal?
45 to 50 ships were using the canal every day, all of which would have to travel around Africa and if they make it through pirate waters, the cost of everything they deliver would go UP.
The primary purpose of the U.S. Navy is to keep the Worlds Sea Lanes open. You don’t just allow the closure of 8 percent of the worlds sea lanes just to thumb your nose at the rest of the globe. It is just stupid. And believe me it will have a major impact here.
This answer is disingenuous.
I am all for energy independence. We have plenty of oil for ourselves and need to be free of our dependence on foreign oil.
But that's not happening any time soon. Even if they started on it TODAY, there's no way anything could be accomplished in the time frame that would be necessary to avoid us getting involved.
And it's not just oil either. The Suez Canal prevents those long trips around Africa for other commerce.
So there are other countries besides the US that have an interest in the region? Let them start a coalition, why should we have to be the ones and then have all the progressives get pissed at us?
Just kidding, I love to piss off progressives!
Amen...Obama would have a half assed plan that he will drop half way thru when his poll numbers drop into the negative. All those who will have fought there will have done so for nothing.
Looks like we should have started drilling here ten years ago...
