Research suggests boosting key milk nutrients calcium and vitamin D could aid weight loss
Now there's a new reason to grab a glass of milk when you're on diet, suggests a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. In a 2-year weight loss study, milk drinkers had an advantage over those who skipped the milk. Israeli researchers found that adults who drank the most milk (nearly 2 glasses per day) and had the highest vitamin D levels at 6 months, lost more weight after 2 years than those who had little or no milk or milk products -- nearly 12 pounds weight loss, on average.
Researchers also found that each additional 6-ounce serving of milk or milk products (about 3/4 of a glass of milk) was associated with 10 pounds successful weight loss above the average, at 6 months.
More than 300 overweight or at risk men and women ages 40 65 participated in the study following low-fat, Mediterranean or low-carb diets for 2 years. Regardless of diet, researchers found participants with the highest dairy calcium intake 6 months into the study (averaging about 580mg per day the amount in nearly 2 glasses of milk) lost about 12 pounds at the end of the 2 years, compared to about 7 pounds for those with the lowest dairy calcium intake (averaging about 150mg, or about half of a glass).
Beyond calcium, the researchers also found that vitamin D levels independently affected weight loss success and in line with previous research, milk and milk products were the top contributors to vitamin D in the diets of the study participants.
Despite the potential health benefits, many Americans are still not getting the recommended 400IU of vitamin D each day the amount in four glasses of fat free or lowfat milk. This D-ficiency may put their health at risk, for healthy weight and beyond. Well known for its role in keeping bones strong, vitamin D is now being hailed for so much more. Emerging science suggests vitamin D may also help protect against diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and certain cancers. It also supports a healthy immune system.
Fat free milk is packed with nine essential nutrients Americans need, including calcium and vitamin D, and contains 80 calories per 8-ounce serving. Research suggests eating right, getting active and drinking the recommended three glasses of lowfat or fat free milk daily can help you maintain a healthy weight.

“I don’t wanna look like Howdy Doody, mom.”
I’m sure the vegans are having a hissy fit about this.
Whole milk. Whole milk yogurt. Full fat cheese. Butter on my bread, on the rare occasions I eat bread. 2000 IU of Vit D, because I don’t do sun.
It’s easy to maintain my weight on a full fat diet - I know when I’ve had enough to eat, and I can go longer without eating and not get the jitters, depression and headaches of low blood sugar.
Meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts, veggies and fruit.
Vitamin D is indeed important. There have been a spate of recent articles about how most of us get far less than we need and of the degenerative diseases we’re prone to for being chronically deficient.
That said, there are plenty of ways to get Vitamin D. The reigning theory is that we became deficient when we moved North and started wearing clothes. If you can handle milk then more power to you, but we weren’t originally designed to drink it past the age of six months or so. And certainly not to drink the milk of other critters.
Luuuv milk, part of the Crunchy Con thing.
Why is one of the countries biggest PR firms, Weber Shandwick, putting out a press release about a study on milk. It makes me wonder who paid for the study.
I hate milk and always have.....I have STRONG bones....without it....and I’m 59 yr old woman!
And I've spated dozens into this forum. :-)
I remember reading John Robbins “Diet for a New America” from the late eighties and getting the vegan opinion.
The veggies say that meat and dairy eating deluge us with low-quality proteins that DEPLETE calcium from our bodies and that on a veggie diet we get plenty without having to specifically load up on calcium.
Robbins pointed out a few of those primitive, turd-world cultures that eat mostly vegetarian diets with no calcium-rich foods who seemingly never have to worry about osteoporosis.
Sorry, but my experience has been the opposite. I have gained the most weight in my life during periods where I was drinking 1-2 glasses of milk with dinner each night.
The medical establishment created a phobia about sun exposure. The sun is good for you, as long as you do not bake yourself in search of a tan.
The turd-worlders probably get plenty of sun. Our ancestors made “Vitamin” D (really a hormone) from sunlight, but some of them migrated into regions where sunlight was dim and skin needed to be covered with insulation, so they need to get D from food.
In England & other areas Cod liver oil capsule were given out free to the public, cold & flu numbers plummeted.
Unfortunately , Big Pharma profits went down accordingly so local officials were appropriately and vehemently chastised.
Big Pharma may save your sorry left wing ass some day. You one of those people who long for the days of scrofula?
Ah. And I imagine that number 300 suntan lotion that people slather on themselves from head to toe doesn’t help.
