Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

No doubt that will happen when things get tough. They’ll be stealing everything they can find.

Have guns and ammo handy!

>>>Does one close their eyes and choose one?<<<

I found two from nearby... One 4 miles away and one 30 miles.
Just be careful with the canning recipes...

They had some really great seafood recipes... Oysters, Clams and Crabs - more ways than I had ever imagined.

am copying them to a thumb drive to have them portable and safe from a HD crash.

What's a thumb drive? Is that like a flash drive that fits into the USB ports? (I LOVE those things...)

Was a good mornin’ but afternoon now in Michigan. Sheesh...just as I was gonna hit send on the reply a while ago (in the morning...amazing how time flies) my cable modem took a dump...so I used the opportunity to do some dishes. I picked up my sis from the airport at 5:00am this morning. She flew in from Kingman/Sohi - Vegas to sell off the remaining contents of mom (RIP-love) and dad’s trailer before we give it back to the park (not many buyers here in the socialist paradise/sarcasm Michigan). Surviving. Taking heed of the survivalist’s thread. Thanks to all.

I’m sorry for your loss. Dealing with their belongings must make it all the harder to bear.

I dunno about the socialist paraside of Michigan - I’ve never been here, but I’ll bet it’s beautiful. And no more socialist than Mexifornia! I would really like to leave here and move back to the US.

Thanks. Mom died last October 21, five days shy of her 78th birthday, after a 20-year battle with Parkinson. My dad is now living with my sis across the highway from granny in Arizona. She tried to sell the place, but now that the contract is up...just wants to get rid of it...and not continue to pay rent on a place that nobody lives in.

Sorry for that short answer -

Actually, I have seven of them. Not only do I have FR info on it, but I have most important papers on there too. Medical Records, Taxes, Titles, Deeds, Birth Certificates, Baptismal Records, adoption papers, Social Security info, family pictures, insurance pictures, software to read all these files. All of the files have been zipped with double passwords. I keep one in with each of the grab packs, one on each key ring and one in the safe - the other two I have inside jars, stashed where I could find them if necessary.

I try to keep all of them synchronized with same data on all of them. (sometimes it may go about a month before I update the stashed ones)

I use the Corsair Flash Survivor GT 8GB - they are rugged and water resistant to 600 meters (almost 2,000 feet). So far, 8GB is just under half used.
