Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

>>>Now here is a dumb question, I heard it asked on the radio and as I have wondered at all the naked men the cops get called on, it could be they have heard it too.......

The caller asked if it was true that the dogs will not bark at a naked man?

And got a “I don’t know answer”<<<

LOL - And you are asking me??????

Have never tried approaching a strange dog while naked...

BUT - maybe we should promote this theory widely - it would have several advantages - easier to identify criminals - easier to see if they are armed - makes it hard for them to escape by blending into a crowd - makes for an easier decision, if he is naked, shoot first as he must be a criminal - It would provide another form of defense - victim could point and ROFL thereby embarrassing criminal over his manhood (or lack thereof).

Then this begs the question that if the perp is a female, would men bark or howl like a dog?

But, have to give you a “I don’t know answer” too.

(guess I should label this /sarc)

LOL, I thought it was ‘tongue in cheek, humor/satire’....

I don’t know why so many in the west are taking off their clothes and going for a stroll or a ‘run’.

When I hear nakid, I think of the men who walk 40 to 200 miles across the desert and start to die from a heat stroke.

The first thing they throw away, is their wallet, then the watch and so it goes, one item at a time, as they keep walking.

We have tracked them by the discards, when we got word that someone was in trouble, this was in Wellton, the hot Yuma desert.

I have seen the bodies come in as high as 6 in one family that was coming to work in America.

So goes real life.

1. Healthy Dairy Butter Substitute
Posted by: “Malcolm”

Another Recipe from “Ronda’s Kitchen”:

COCONUT BUTTER

Easier to digest and MUCH healthier than dairy butter or hydrogenated fats in margarine...

In Blender or Vitamix:

1 1/4 cup Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
3/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil (”First Cold Pressed” is the absolute best)
1/3 cup Extra Virgin Flax Oil (may substitute more Olive Oil if don’t have flax oil)
1 cup water
1 Tablespoon (or +) Soy Lecithin
1 Teaspoon (or +) Celtic Salt

Blend, low to medium, thoroughly, until uniform. Will have a yellow-green syrupy consistency.

Pour into tub-like containers (e.g. Pyrex with plastic lid) and into fridge. Let chill down a bit — until firm — before adding lid or will “sweat”.

Let chill overnight.

To use, take out and let warm for 30-45 minutes. Use. (First time out of fridge, stir to make more smooth and creamy, after setting for a bit). Re-chill after use, or will melt down to a syrup again.

For variations, make with favorite spices, herbs, or flavorings. e.g. basil, garlic, Italian seasoning, rosemary, thyme (good with fish), or like fruit or berry flavorings.

Yummy consistency... the coconut undertone takes a bite or two to get used to... after that.. no going back to butter.

Note sure how it would work for baking... will find out!

FREEZES WELL!

Malcolm

2. Bacon and Cheese Mini Muffins
Posted by: “Vergie”

Bacon and Cheese Mini Muffins

3 cups Bisquick
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 (10 3/4 ounce) can cheese soup
12 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 cup cheddar cheese, Shredded

Cut bacon into small pieces and cook, drain well on paper towels.

Mix bisquick, vegetable oil, eggs, cheese soup and shreeded cheese.

Pour into mini muffin pan and top with crumbled bacon.

Bake at 325 for 20 minute.

You can also mix the bacon in the batter or even substitute crumbled sausage.

Report Finds Direct Marketing Boom
http://www.extension.org/pages/New_AMS_Fact_Sheet_Shows_Direct-to-Consumer_Marketing_Growing_Faster_Than_Total
A new report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) shows direct-to-consumer farm marketing in the United States is growing faster than total agricultural sales. The two categories increased 104.7 percent and 47.6 percent, respectively, from 1997 to 2007. AMS’s Marketing Services Division developed Facts on Direct-To-Consumer Food Marketing (http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/getfile?dDocName=STELPRDC5076729&acct=wdmgeninfo) (PDF/1.3MB) to examine the contribution that direct-to-consumer marketing is making to the food system in different regions of the country. The report compares data from the 2007 Census of Agriculture with those from previous years.

USDA Releases Organic Industry Report
http://www.ers.usda.gov/Publications/EIB55/
On Wednesday, June 3, USDA’s Economic Research Service released a report entitled, ‘Emerging Issues in the U.S. Organic Industry.’ The report provides an overview of trends in the organic industry and the accompanying issues, including shortfalls in supply, production costs, and competing labels. The report also discusses changes in policies for organic agriculture with the passage of the 2008 Farm Bill.

Community Gardening Toolkit Available
http://extension.missouri.edu/publications/DisplayPub.aspx?P=MP906#What
The University of Missouri Extension has released Community Gardening Toolkit (http://extension.missouri.edu/explorepdf/miscpubs/mp0906.pdf) (PDF/971KB). The 16 page publication contains information on how to start a community garden, steps to success, benefits of a garden, resources and more. Also available is a Gardeners’ Welcome Packet (PDF/134KB). The packet is intended to be a tool for organizing your garden, introducing new gardeners to the policies, procedures and people that keep the garden running smoothly, and keeping returning gardeners updated and involved.

Glossary of Climate Change Words Released
http://www.leopold.iastate.edu/news/newsreleases/2009/060309_glossary.html
A new glossary from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture defines terms like ‘milankovitch cycles’ and ‘eutrophication,’ which could become just as common in climate change discussions in the near future as carbon footprint and acid rain are now. Understanding Common Terms Used in Discussions about Climate Change and Agriculture (http://www.leopold.iastate.edu/research/marketing_files/glossary.pdf) (PDF/2.8MB) is the name of a new resource from the Leopold Center. The glossary was written by Rich Pirog, Leopold Center Associate Director and leader of the Center’s Marketing and Food Systems Initiative, and Rebecca Rasmussen, an MBA student in the ISU College of Business. Following each of the terms are definitions and their sources, as well as places to get more information on the Internet.

Pricing and Profits Information Now Available
http://ssawg.org/ed-sessions.html#pricingandprofits
Presentations from the ‘Pricing and Profits: Making the Right Decisions for Small-Scale Farmers’ finance short course during the 2009 Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group conference are now available online. Jim Munsch and Alex Hitt took participants through a step-by-step process in order to make better informed financial decisions. The three presentations — The Beef Cost Model, The Vegetable Cost Model, and Figuring the Cost to Own and Operate Farm Machinery — presented the critical first step in developing a complete farm financial plan.

Oklahoma to Celebrate Local Foods Week
http://www.kerrcenter.com/HTML/events.html#localfoods
Governor Brad Henry has officially proclaimed June 14 - 21 as Local Foods Week in Oklahoma, thanks to the hard work of the Oklahoma Buy Fresh Buy Local - Green Country chapter. Mayor Kathy Taylor of Tulsa has also made a similar proclamation for her city. The week will feature a number of different activities and events in northeast OK to celebrate the rich diversity of locally-produced foods in early summer, to encourage support of local farmers throughout the season, and to grow more ‘Oklavores.’

Funding Opportunities

New York Dairy Profit Team Program
http://www.nyfvi.org/default.aspx?PageID=2354
The NY Center for Dairy Excellence is offering the first program to bring Dairy Profit Teams to farms throughout the state. Dairy Profit Teams are advisors that help a farm identify issues and opportunities on the farm, develop strategies for change, and offer suggestions. Under this program, Dairy Profit Teams may receive cost share assistance of $2,400, approximately 80 percent of the costs to run a team for one year. The NYCDE has funding to launch approximately 45 teams from June-December 2009.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, until funding is exhausted.

National Integrated Water Quality Program
http://www.csrees.usda.gov/fo/waterqualityicgp.cfm
The goal of the National Integrated Water Quality Program is to improve the quality of our nation’s surface water and groundwater resources through research, education, and extension activities. Projects funded through this program will advance the knowledge available to agricultural and rural communities. Funded projects should lead to science-based decision-making and management practices that improve the quality of the nation’s surface water and groundwater resources in agricultural and rural watersheds.
Proposals are due July 15, 2009.

There is also a large amount of good information on this site.

Baking Supplies & Ingredients: Organic Honey and Molasses Crystals

Natural Honey and Molasses Crystals

You’ll love these natural, organic crystals. Use them anywhere sugar is called for to add the delightful, subtle flavor of honey or mild molasses to your baked goods. Sprinkle them on your cereal or on an ice cream sundae. Make a honey or molasses syrup to top pancakes or a dessert.

Use them in any recipe that calls for sugar. Substitute natural honey or molasses crystals on a one-for-one basis for all or part of the sugar. Take them camping or stock up the RV. You’ll find hundreds of uses for these wonderful crystals.

Honey and molasses are hygroscopic, that is, they attract moisture rather than drying out. Because they are hygroscopic, they will help keep your baked goods fresher.

These crystals are made from pure organic honey or organic molasses and are dehydrated with organic cane sugar added.

For rich sour cream bread, rolls, and muffins, add the powder to the dough or batter just as you would dry milk. There is no need to reconstitute it. It gives the tang of sour cream to your baked goods.
Use this sour cream powder in your baking and cooking for the rich taste of sour cream in the convenience of a powder.

For rich sour cream bread, rolls, and muffins, add the powder to the dough or batter just as you would dry milk. There is no need to reconstitute it. It gives the tang of sour cream to your baked goods. Because it is acidic, it reacts with baking soda as a leavening agent to make products rise more.

* Add this sour cream to your casseroles and main dishes just as you would fresh sour cream.
* Take some to the cabin or stash some in the RV.
* Mix this sour cream powder with water to make a creamy sauce the consistency of fresh dairy sour cream.
* Store some in the pantry as a back up to fresh sour cream.

This is a large economy sized package, approximately four cups of powder. This is the best, longest lasting sour cream powder we can buy. We package it in heavy vista zipper-type bags for your convenience. If you are not going to use it within a year, we recommend that you store it in mylar or freeze it.

Ingredients: Cultured sour cream. This product is packaged with equipment used in the packaging of baking mixes and may contain traces of soy, eggs, wheat or nuts.

The Earth and I are friends now - 1943 wartime ad - tribute to the new millions
of amateur farmers

Last year I never thought of the earth except as something to walk on. But in the
spring I turned up the sod and planted seed. Summer - grubbing for weeds and watching
things grow - I got friendly with the land.
Well, it’s autumn now. The crop wasn’t big - but fair enough. And something good
has happened to our family! We’ve weeded and watered and hoped together. And said
our table blessing over our own harvest.

It seems to me that my family has come back to some important things. Come back
to one another - and to our good soil. Come back to being neighbors with the family
whose garden row begins where ours leaves off.

BrightFarm Systems develops futuristic urban agriculture projects

The GreenMarket utilizes BrightFarm Systems pioneering rooftop and facade mounted,
sustainable greenhouse designs, to integrate hydroponic food production into civic
buildings. The layers of vegetation encased in the walls of the building provide
shade for the building interior.

The interior of the building structure is designed to serve as marketplaces, recreation
centers, meeting halls, or any function that can benefit from enclosed, naturally
lit, shaded, conditioned or semi-conditioned space. In the Abu Dhabi climate, these
spaces will be extremely appealing in the summer, but should also be very comfortable
at all times of year.

Jane Evershed - artist in the garden
Urban Delight

The street eating graffiti takes no pity on your soul,
Yet a garden chanced upon, in a sea of concrete
Works magic in your bones,
Like foliage embracing stones.
Tilled soil gives birth to bluebells,
Baby’s breath silences the endless traffic
As urban gardeners work miracles,
With seeds of hope.

Roots - a theatre production set in an allotment garden
It takes place at the Bath Organic Group Allotments, Victoria Park, Bath.

‘The time is ripe for digging. As cheap imported fruit and veg rapidly become a
thing of the past, Kilter invites you to grab a spade and elope to the allotment
for a theatrical journey into the future of food. Through an intimate tale of love
and vegetables, Kilter leads you and your neighbours down the bean-rows to explore
food-security in a post-oil world.

CARROTS LOVE TOMATOES

A guide to companion planting for healthier plants and bigger harvests from the garden.

The A to Z Guide to Companion Planting for Healthier Plants and Bigger Harvests

THE MAGIC AND MYSTERY OF companion planting has intrigued and fascinated men for centuries, yet it is a part of the gardening world that has never been fully explored. Plants that assist each other in growing well, that repel insects, or that even repel other plants are all of great practical use, but we’re just beginning to find out why. In the years to come I hope scientists, gardeners, and farmers everywhere will work together to make discoveries that will prove of great value in augmenting the world’s food supply. Already, companion planting has produced insect- and disease-resistant fruits, grains, and vegetables, and experiments are being conducted on weed-resistant varieties.

A major enemy of the carrot is the carrot fly, whereas the leek suffers from the leek moth and the onion fly. Yet when they live in companionship, the strong and strangely different smell of the partner plant repels the insects so well that they do not even attempt to lay their eggs on the neighbor plant. This is why mixed plantings give better insect control than a monoculture where many plants of the same type are planted together in row after row.

It’s the same with kohlrabi and radishes in their community life with lettuce. Both are often afflicted by earth flies, but when the flies get the odor of lettuce they take off. Even when plants are affected by diseases one can usually alleviate the situation with a mixed plant culture.

All through this article you will find “what to grow with” and “what not to grow with.” Both are equally important to gardening success. The following suggestions for companion planting are only a beginning. Your own experiments will lead you toward many different pathways and discoveries.

Asparagus ( Asparagus officinalis ).

Parsley planted alongside asparagus gives added vigor to both. Asparagus also goes well with basil, which itself is a good companion for tomatoes. Tomatoes will protect asparagus against asparagus beetles because they contain a substance called solanine. But if asparagus beetles are present in great numbers, they will attract and be controlled by their natural predators, making spraying unnecessary. A chemical derived from asparagus juice also has been found effective on tomato plants as a killer of nematodes, including the root-knot sting, stubby root, and meadow varieties.

In my garden, I grow asparagus in a long row at one side. After the spears are harvested in early spring, I plant tomatoes on either side, and I find that both plants prosper from the association. Cultivating the tomatoes also stems weed growth around the asparagus. The asparagus fronds should not be cut much, if at all, until very late in the fall, as the roots need this top growth to enable them to make spears the following spring.

Companion planting is a good idea and it works.

Even the Indians were using it, when the Americans landed.

The Three Sisters garden, Corn, Beans and Squash.

Years ago, I always read that the Indian dug a hole and put a dead fish in it, then planted his seeds, so the fertilizer was in the ground and waiting for the roots.

They also sprinkled cornmeal as a form of a blessing, to the four directions.

Now we find out that cornmeal is good for the garden.....

Six Reported Deaths Prompt Urgent Re-announcement of Blair Recall of Women’s Chenille Robes
Consumers Urged to Check for Flammable Robes

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Blair LLC, of Warren, Pa., are re-announcing the voluntary recall by Blair of 162,000 women’s full length Chenille Robes. Since the recall was originally announced in April 2009, Blair has received reports of six deaths due to the robes catching on fire. Five of the six victims were female, and all five were cooking at the time of the incidents. Three of the victims were in their 80s.

CPSC and Blair announced the recall for the robes after Blair learned of three robes catching on fire, including one report of second-degree burns. Blair was subsequently made aware of the fatalities after the recall was announced and after Blair had sent letters of the recall to consumers who purchased the robes.

The Women’s Chenille Robes have the following item numbers: 3093111, 3093112, 3093113, 3093114, 3093115, and 3093116. The item number is identified on a label in the garment’s neckline. The robe is a one-piece garment made of plush sculpted chenille, a shaped stand collar, and horizontal chenille front and back yolks and cuffs. The robe has a full-button front with seven matching button closures, long sleeves with self cuffs, a straight bottom with self hem, and two sideseam pockets. The robe’s sewn in label states: “100% Cotton, RN 81700, Made in Pakistan”.

The robes were sold in Blair catalogs and Web site, and Blair stores in Warren, Pa., Grove City, Pa., and Wilmington, Del., from January 2003 through March 2009 from about $20 to $40.

CPSC and Blair once again urge consumers to stop wearing the garments immediately and contact Blair LLC for information on returning the robe and to receive a refund or a $50 gift card for Blair merchandise. Contact Blair toll-free at (877) 392-7095 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET Monday through Saturday, visit the firm’s Web site at www.blair.com/recall, or contact the firm by e-mail at blairproductrecall@blair.com

“CPSC urges all consumers to report any incidents or injuries involving consumer products, even after a recall has been announced,” said Acting CPSC Chairman Thomas Moore. “Contact the CPSC so that we may help prevent tragic deaths or injuries like those that might be related to the Blair robes.”

To see this recall on CPSC’s web site, including pictures of the recall product, please go to: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09241.html
