Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has sent a memo to some health care providers noting procedures to be followed if the swine flu outbreak eventually makes quarantines necessary.

DHS Assistant Secretary Bridger McGaw circulated the swine flu memo, which was obtained by CBSNews.com, on Monday night. It says: “The Department of Justice has established legal federal authorities pertaining to the implementation of a quarantine and enforcement. Under approval from HHS, the Surgeon General has the authority to issue quarantines.”

McGaw appears to have been referring to the section of federal law that allows the Surgeon General to detain and quarantine Americans “reasonably believed to be infected” with a communicable disease. A Centers for Disease Control official said on Tuesday that swine flu deaths in the U.S. are likely.

Federal quarantine authority is limited to diseases listed in presidential executive orders; President Bush added “novel” forms of influenza with the potential to create pandemics in Executive Order 13375. Anyone violating a quarantine order can be punished by a $250,000 fine and a one-year prison term.
he memo from McGaw, who is DHS’ acting assistant secretary for the private sector, also said: “U.S. Customs and Coast Guard Officers assist in the enforcement of quarantine orders. Other DOJ law enforcement agencies including the U.S. Marshals, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives may also enforce quarantines. Military personnel are not authorized to engage in enforcement.”

Now they are posting that the dead child was visiting from Mexico.

Will they close the border?

One of the terrorist training manuals, planned it out, that the simple way to conduct germ warfare, is to send sick people, as they are secret, and contaminate so many that they come in contact with.

Also planned the expected spraying with crop dusters and there are still a couple of them, stolen and thought to be in Mexico.

The Palestinians use nails and bolts soaked in diseased blood in the bombs they set off in Israel, have for years.

The suicide vest bombers are often people infected with something that you will catch, if you get the blood and flesh on you.........

So, whatever one really thinks, the facts are out there that at the very least, there are jihadi all over the world jumping with glee, as this disease is spread.

This one is really worth the read!

WIFE FROM HELL

A police officer pulls over a speeding car. The officer says, ‘ I
clocked you at 80 miles per hour, sir.’

The driver says, ‘Gee, officer I had it on cruise control at 60,
perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating.’

Not looking up from her knitting the wife says: ‘Now don’t be silly
dear, you know that this car doesn’t have cruise control.’

As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife
and growls, ‘Can’t you please keep your mouth shut for once?’

The wife smiles demurely and says, ‘You should be thankful your radar
detector went off when it did.’

As the officer makes out a second ticket for the illegal radar detector
unit fitted in the car he had just pulled over, the man glowers at his
wife and says through clenched teeth, ‘Dangit, woman, can’t you keep your
mouth shut?’

The officer frowns and says, ‘And I notice that you’re not wearing your
seat belt, sir. That’s an automatic $75 fine.’

The driver says, ‘Yeah, well, you see officer, I had it on, but took it
off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my
back pocket.’

The wife says, ‘Now, dear, you know very well that you didn’t haveyour
seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you’re driving.’

And as the police officer is writing out the third ticket the driver
turns to his wife and barks, ‘WHY DON’T YOU PLEASE SHUT UP??’

The officer looks over at the woman and asks, ‘Does your husband always
talk to you this way, Ma’am?’

I love this part............ :

.
.
.

‘Only when he’s been drinking.’

That was one way I could share my sister’s small inheritance and as she loved my children dearly, I know she would be pleased.

That's an excellent way to use your sister's inheritance. And very thoughtful of you.

I am trying to learn to use a mouse with this laptop, hence the double posts, I guess. (Got to blame it on something, right?)

;) Laptops are hard for me to use. The keyboard and all are too darned tiny! So, IMO, you have a perfect excuse!

You can use a keyboard with a laptop. Just plug it into one of the ports. I know someone who does that because they don’t like the laptop keyboard.

Laptops are so compact and so portable and have so much memory these days, that you don’t need all the big clunky equipment anymore.

Next one we get will be like that.

I think you meant this for upcountry miss. I don’t use a laptop myself. Well, I did when I lived at the cabin last summer - but I did exactly what you said. I used an exterior full-sized keyboard and mouse.

But my hubby likes to use his laptop while sitting on the couch - and at least he’s with the family physcially then, if not in spirit ;) But doing it like that makes using exterior devices tough.

I don’t have a fancy canner or pressure cooker; just a big old enamel pot and a basket for the jars and a pair of canning tongs.

Can you briefly tell me your procedure? And how long you boil stuff and how to tell when it's 'done'. (Whatever that means in canning land!)

FDA advises that tadalafil, may cause side effects, such as headaches and flushing.

The recalled Libimax is sold as a 1 capsule individual pack or 10-capsule and 20-capsule plastic bottles in retail stores in California, Georgia, Illinois, Texas, and Ohio. The product label neither states it contains tadalafil nor warns consumers with high blood pressure not to ingest the product.

Consumers who have Libimax in their possession should stop using it immediately and contact their physician if they experienced any problem that may be related to taking this product. The public is encouraged to submit a report of any serious adverse events that occur with the use of Libimax to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online [at www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm ], by phone [1-800-FDA-1088], or by returning the postage-paid FDA form 3500 [which may be downloaded from www.fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm] by mail [to MedWatch, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787] or fax [1-800-FDA-0178].

Nature & Health Co. is committed to providing accurate information about its products because of concern for the health and safety of consumers. Nature & Health Co. is working with the FDA in the recall process. It sincerely regrets any inconvenience to customers.

No illnesses have been reported to the Company to date in connection with this product.

Consumers should return any unused Libimax, for a refund of the full purchase price or price for the unused portion, to the retail location where it was purchased or to contact Nature & Health directly at (714) 257-1800 Monday – Friday, 8am to 5pm or by email at sales@naturenhealth.com to receive further instructions for returning the product or with any questions.
