Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? Its an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training
Ive been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe thats why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood
You are welcome here, better hurry back or we will get so far ahead that you will never catch up.

I haven’t heard from AD in a long time, like you, I hope he is well and happy.
Good to know his list is still available as it covered all that one could need.
I am glad you stopped in to check out this new thread.
Ill bet this one gets to 10,000 also,<<<
It will and sooner than #1 did.
Glad you checked in, was wondering if you are OK?
Time for you to update us on what you are cooking, isn’t it?
Isnt DelaWhere great? she found the best stuff!<<<
LOL, I hope his wife knows that Cal is a real man.
Yes, I get to laugh, as I made the same assumption.
Vickie thank you for posting the earth box links.
It is wonderful that you kept the information we need and will dig it up for us.
California will wake up, when they get hungry.
It is difficult for me to accept that so many nuts live in one place.
A few years ago, they were saving a mud sucker or some such and wanting to take out a bunch of farms.
Amazing to me, that so many can be so clueless.
Maybe Arnold is doing them a favor, they won’t be able to buy all their fancy foods on 4 days a week or no job at all and will learn what real life is all about.
Thank you for all the work that went into making an index, an awesome job you have done.
Sending many hugs, and much love......
I expected to also see your group link and didn’t so here it is:

Really adds a mellow taste to a good stew too.
Never fear Granny Dear,
Cal may have snow on the roof but there remains a fire in the boiler. ;)
Just ask my wife... ;)

Thanks, it is an important read.
John Caldera also tackled this last night, scary as it can get.
You may be able to find the first couple hours of his program from last night here:
Hopefully, I have found a handy man to hire for the leaks, if the roof ever dries out, so the gunk will stick.
The bedroom leak is from a vent in the roof, but the bathroom leak is not fixable, as it comes from a source that several men cannot find.
As for crafts, those I can’t do any longer, but did them all at one time.
Crochet, spinning, weaving, sewing, quilts, paper mache and anything else that caught my eye, I get bored easy, so jumped around and never really mastered one to the point of calling it real art.
Lots of beads in my past....LOL
Or the water quality test . New wells hardly ever test drinkable until they have been flushed for a few weeks so everyone just gets water to send for a test from someone elses older well. What a money making racket. I like to remind them at town hall that I can remember when one person did the work of town clerk, treasurer, tax collector, notary public and justice of the peace. She left as they wouldn’t give her a raise after 20 years at the same salary and now it takes 15 people to do her work. What is more fustrating is that my hubby ran a plumbing and heating business before retirement and he knows most of these new regulations are not really necessary.
By the way, I live a few miles East of Hollis, Maine nearer the ocean. Just love harvesting seaweed for my compost pile.
LOL, I haven’t seen that photo for a long time.
The TM Freepers broke me from calling Duct tape Duck tape with that photo.
A disaster drill is very important, esp. if one lives in town and has family that will be spread out when it hits.
I always know where I am, LOL, or do most of the time.
Welcome to the thread.
These ‘drills’ are useful...LOL
I broke the local cops from coming to my house to ask where someone lived, they couldn’t quite understand why I was always racing to meet them...
And then one day, I explained to him, that my husband drove a gas truck for a living.
He kept his word and did not stop here for idle info again.
Ark and Dove Settlers - Maryland 1634
I have an ancestor who settled the town of Guilford Connecticut in 1639. His name was John Parmelee (he signed the compact to commit to stay in Guilford as John Parmelin).
Geez, guess I be a newbie! My family didn't get here till 1703...
Got lots of ideas for more rock placement this summer when the river gets low enough for rock harvest. LOL. At the rate I am going, I need to live to 100 to get just half of my projects finished.<<<
Laughing and able to imagine the scene.
Keep your eyes open for one with holes, so you can pound grains in the pockets and they make nice stools to sit on.
Or two of like size, with a plank across them, to sit on.
The miners used big ones, on an arm, to grind the ore in a rock bin, think wishing well, I have found several old Spanish arrastas, some with the smooth sided rocks and a home made eye bolt on the top, so it would connect to the arm.
In the beginning slaves pushed the arm and here they used donkeys from Mexico.
COULD WE TALK A LITTLE ABOUT HOW TO SURVIVE, WHEN THE LAST PAYCHECK HAS BEEN SPENT???
WHERE WILL YOU GET THE FOOD TO FEED THE KIDS???
WHERE WILL YOU LIVE???
WHAT WILL YOU DO NEXT???
WHERE WILL I FIND A JOB???
WHAT SHOULD I DO TO BRIDGE THE GAP???<<<<<<
Granny, I hate to say it, but they will have to hit bottom in many cases before they will start the road back up.
Somewhat like a junkie - they are going to have to get low enough to decide that dignity, status, pride, and greed won’t get them ahead - Taking that dirty, grimy work just for food and shelter will have to look better to them than the starvation they face.
Years ago, Great Uncle Johnnie had a store here in our nearest town. He had an old fellow who was not the sharpest knife in the drawer who was down and out - he had him sweep the store, stock and straighten the shelves, take out the trash or whatever needed doing, and in return, he got meals, one of the rooms in the attic and a little spending money from time to time. He ate with the family, and received birthday, Christmas and other presents of clothes and other items. Today, Uncle Johnnie couldn’t do that. He would have to pay minimum wage, pay payroll taxes and have his housing inspected. Must be that Ronald Reagan was right - ‘Government is the problem.’
Oh, and Uncle Johnnie used to have 5 or 6 ‘Sunshine Kids’ from the inner city who came and spent the summer helping out in return for gardening, delivering groceries, etc. All that would be out too. And those kids would never know the wonders of the world outside their ghetto.
