Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

“It is possible, though by no means certain, that heads at this stage to be severely damaged by hard sleet or hail. By next week, it should be possible to determine if the heads are still alive. If the head is watersoaked and off-color at that time, and new leaves coming from the whorl are yellow, that head is damaged,” he adds. “Where heads are damaged, new tillers may start growing soon. In that case, the ultimate yield potential will depend on weather conditions through the remainder of the spring, but yields will probably be reduced to some extent.”<<<<

Any loss of crop this year will affect the world, for other countries are having the same problems.

>>>Dumb Question: anybody know if it's possible to can a “hostess ham”...??? <<<

NOT a dumb question! If by a 'hostess ham' you mean the precooked-spiral sliced hams, the answer is yes! Here's from my favorite canner - Jackie Clay

Canning store-bought ham

I know you have talked about canning store-bought ham in the past, but I can’t find any instructions from you about how to do it. With the holidays upon us, hams are relatively inexpensive, and I’d like to try to can some ham.

Dallen Timothy
Gilbert, Arizona

The way I do ham is to heat the ham in a roasting pan until warm throughout. Then I cut the ham into 1? slices, chunks or dices and pack hot into hot jars, leaving 1? of head space. I make a ham broth or just pour boiling water over the ham, leaving 1? of head space. Wipe the rim of the jar clean, place a hot, previously simmered lid on the jar and screw down the ring firmly tight. Process half pints and pints for 75 minutes and quarts for 90 minutes at 10 pounds pressure in a pressure canner. (altitude adjustments possible over 1,000 feet; consult your canning manual)

This ham is great and I use it every week! I’m buying it on sale right now, too. I think you’ll see the price of meat skyrocketing pretty soon. Good move! — Jackie

Note the key word: “all.” If the FSB, in its international wisdom, considers an institution or company “systemically important”, it may regulate and over see it. This provision extends and internationalizes the proposals of the Obama Administration to regulate all firms, in whatever sector of the economy that it deems to be “too big to fail.”<<<

Even I did not expect obama to sell us out so quickly.

This is unreal and must be stopped and quick.

by the time the next election date is due, there will not be a country left to hold it.

Brian Williams did a segment on the Evening News tonight on this. Very scary, indeed.<<<

Yes, it is scary and we do not know how many other computers they are also in, with the stealth programs already installed.

There are past cases of “someone” using the computers to mess with the amount of chlorine there is in a drinking water plant, and to divert sewage onto public beaches and clean waterways.

I read something a few days ago, that the gov was asking the water treatment plants to stop using chlorine and use one of the other less dangerous chemicals to treat water with, for their chlorine treated water, after being messed with had burned a few people that bathed in it.

It is all in the al-qaeda training manual.

Raptiva (efalizumab)

Audience: Dermatological healthcare professionals, patients
Genentech and FDA notified healthcare professionals of the voluntary, phased withdrawal of Raptiva, a medication for treatment of psoriasis, from the U.S. market due to a potential risk to patients of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). By June 8, 2009, Raptiva will no longer be available in the United States. Prescribers are being asked not to initiate Raptiva treatment for any new patients. Prescribers should immediately begin discussing with patients currently using Raptiva how to transition to alternative therapies. The FDA strongly recommends that patients work with their health care professional to transition to alternative therapies for psoriasis.

>>>How many Farmers will just simply be bankrupt and out of business?<<<

Things could get nasty...

The good thing is that some paid down debt last year when commodity prices were high. The bad thing is that many will still not have the reserves and cannot borrow (although Farm Credit System is still viable) Seed costs are sky high, fuel is heading back up, fertilizer costs are sky high too, equipment costs are very high, and weather is not cooperating.

When you see pictures of a modern combine going through the field, few people realize that it is several hundred thousand dollars, the trucks are tens of thousands - all having to be bought by the farmers. Add the tractors, tilling equipment, irrigation equipment and all - pretty soon you are talking enough money to really make your head spin.

There are not that many of the old traveling custom harvesters anymore - since time is of the essence, and weather unpredictable, the farmers couldn’t wait for their turn to be harvested.

More government mandates, controls and price games could be what does them in.

Former Nurse Anesthetist Pleads Guilty to Infecting Patients with Hepatitis C

United States Attorney Johnny Sutton announced that 46-year-old John Dale Jones pleaded guilty today to one count of assault on a patient and one count of drug diversion. He was indicted on March 27, 2008, on charges that while employed as a certified registered nurse anesthetist at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, he infected patients under his care with Hepatitis C.

Jones was employed at William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) at Fort Bliss from July 2004 through April 2005.

While Jones was working at WBAMC a Hepatitis C outbreak occurred. Subsequent investigation determined a total of 16 patients to be infected with Hepatitis C. Investigation also determined the source of the infection to be the defendant. By pleading guilty today, Jones admitted to an addiction to fentanyl, a highly addictive narcotic used in hospitals. In doing so, he infected the patients with a rare strain of Hepatitis C which was traced back to him.

Sentencing has been set for August 19, 2009. This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service. It is being prosecuted for the government by Assistant United States Attorney Bill Lewis and Patricia Acosta.

Cyber Espionage from Nations?

April 1, 2009

by Ellen Messmer

Cyber espionage from state governments? Don’t be surprised

GhostNet at heart of international cyber espionage search

Did the Chinese government, for strategic purposes, infiltrate more than 1,200 computers in 103 countries to spy on nations’ embassies and government agencies, in addition to the NATO military alliance and even the Deloitte & Touche consultancy?

While not claiming absolute proof, the just-released report ‘Tracking GhostNet: Investigating a Cyber Espionage Network’ says ‘circumstantial evidence’ strongly suggests ‘this set of high profile targets has been exploited by the Chinese state for military and strategic-intelligence purposes.’

The Chinese government strongly refutes those charges, calling them ‘rumors about so-called Internet spies’ and ‘entirely fabricated.’ But some say it’s naïve to presume that China — and the United States and other nations as well — don’t engage in cyber-espionage.

‘It’s part of the intelligence game. I suspect we know exactly what’s happening,’ says Murray Jennex, associate professor in the Information and Decision Systems Department at San Diego State University .

Jennex, who says he spent time in Eastern Europe working on utilities projects, directly experienced cyber-espionage incidents when his e-mail was intercepted and fed to newspapers.

The point, he says, is that cyber-espionage is real and governments do it, and the kind of things that China is accused of in the GhostNet report might also be something that other countries, including the United States , might stand accused of one day, too.

‘Our own people may be doing the same thing,’ Jennex says. He says cyber-espionage, far from being an aberration, is in some respects ‘a normal thing that will happen and continue to happen.’

The GhostNet report — which claims there’s a vast espionage network of compromised government and industry computers around the world linked back to China — is the collaborative effort of investigators associated with SecDev Group and the University of Toronto ‘s Munk Centre for International Studies.

Starting with the computers of monks working for the Dalai Lama’s Tibetan Government in Exile — a political entity in conflict with the Chinese government for several years — the team of investigators claim to have uncovered what they say is computer infiltration spread across several countries’ embassies, private firms, and broadband service providers back to command-and-control servers in China and Hong Kong, plus one in the United States.

The investigative team concluded at least 1,295 computers in 103 countries had been methodically compromised with malware that could remove documents without the targets’ knowledge, log keystrokes, turn on Web cameras and audio inputs.

According to the report, there’s a ‘covert, difficult-to-detect and elaborate cyber-espionage system capable of taking full control of affected systems’ that leads back to China .

While circumstantial evidence points to the Chinese government, the GhostNet report concludes there could be other explanations, such as a criminal network, ‘patriotic hackers’ acting on their own, or an entirely different government doing reconnaissance and surveillance hiding behind the smokescreen of appearing to look like China.

‘It’s difficult to prove, so they won’t say exactly who is doing it,’ Jennex says. ‘You don’t want to say anything without absolute proof.’

It’s not the first time that China has been accused of cyber-espionage. In December 2007, the British government publicly accused China of conducting espionage in British banks and accounting firms, a charge China firmly denied.

>>>local non-chain store has it on very good sale<<<

Same here... I got several at the sale price and will be canning them too.

Friday, if the weather cooperates, I have about 20 roosters to process - will chill them in the spare fridge till Monday, and will start canning that along with the hams. All in all, I should add about 14 or 15 cases of canned meat and broth to my stash.

At this rate, with all the additional meat I am canning, and the rice, beans, etc. that I did in addition to my normal garden canning, I am going to have to lay in another 30 or so cases of jars this year.

More government mandates, controls and price games could be what does them in.<<<

Yes, that is why the hippies were attempting to go back to the horse drawn plow....LOL and why I have held onto Mary’s horse drawn cultivator.

I thought they had all those ‘important’ things all lined up and just waiting for it to be completed.<<<

I haven’t heard of any going up, since the Columbia crashed, for it had an India Lady Scientist on it, that was testing some nasty diseases in space.

They said that her notes had been sent back before the crash.
