Minimal sacrifice
The oyster clamped again tight shut,
After they pried it open
To plant the tiny speck of sand
As poison in her heart.
And if they hope to gather the result,
The most desired pearl,
They have to wait until her death
Or have to kill her now.
Poor little thing, like any other living
Soul, body and entrails,
Giving birth to such a priceless gift,
Cost her both life and death.

In the Top 10:
THE LORELEY
I do not know what haunts me,
What saddened my mind all day;
An age-old tale confounds me,
A spell I cannot allay.
The air is cool and in twilight
The Rhine's dark waters flow;
The peak of the mountain in highlight
Reflects the evening glow.
There sits a lovely maiden
Above, so wondrous fair,
With shining jewels laden,
She combs her golden hair.
It falls through her comb in a shower
And over the valley rings
A song of mysterious power
That lovely maiden sings.
The boatman in his small skiff is
Seized by turbulent love,
No longer he marks where the cliff is,
He looks to the mountain above.
I think the waves must fling him
Against the reefs nearby,
And that did with her singing
The lovely Loreley.

LOL! That is hilarious. I heard that a couple of weeks ago. The story goes that this guy was a manager for McDonald's (??) and was running late for work and pulled over to a phone booth and called his boss to tell him he'd be late when he witnesses this accident and the little old lady flogging the guy that hit her car.
Supposedly, the voice mail was forwarded so many times it crashed their phone/voice mail system. hahaha! I can believe it.

VOWEL, by Nina Cassian
A clean vowel
is my morning,
Latin prononciation
In the murmur of confused time.
With rational syllables
I'm trying to clear the occult mud
and promiscous violence.
My linguistic protest
has no power.
The enemy is illiterate.

The after face reminds me of Paris Hilton, the rest of the after reminds me of a pale Pam Anderson.
