Are most Science Fiction authors and fans liberals/leftists?

Posted on 01/31/2005 1:37:19 PM PST by EveningStar

I've been a science fiction fan for decades and it appears to me that the vast science fiction writers and fans are liberals/leftists. Am I imagining this?

My bad too. I should have caught the sarcasm.

Heck, I thought that the name "Lazamataz" was an automatic Sarcasm-Alert!

Always been a big Frazetta fan, started reading Conan just because of the covers.

LOL! I'll be sure to add that to my "notes to self" section for future reference. The sad part is that Asimov didn't register as obvious. Roddenberry was just too ripe a plum...

Then there's Johnny Ringo who used to hang out here, not sure when he left or why, good action sci-fi though.

Laz was being sarcastic.

And, so obviously, that I am embarrassed that I didn't catch it. I need a 5 second delay... :^)

My fav is that Egyptian Queen thing. He got a lot of work published in Playboy, his females painted in pretty erotic tones. Maybe a dumb question, but not being a Playboy reader, but wasn't and isn't it still (Playboy) a pretty much a politically liberal magazine?

Heff is about as left as they come, and his daughter (who actually runs the company) is just as far left.

Cool! And Laz, sorry I didn't get the sarcasm. I know that Roddenberry started off as a cop, so I wasn't sure!

I do know a sci-fi writer, who did write for a famous sci-fi show, and is liberal to the hilt, as were and are his associates. Their condemnation of the United States more conservative ways of life and religion were a constant target in the show, lambasts laced in and out the plot and disguised amongst symbolic images.

That could be Kenneth Johnson, J. Michael Straczynski, or any number of other folks. :)

True science fiction by its nature is liberal. Challenging the world of today. However, I believe the guy who wrote Starship Trooper was pretty conservative.

I don't think so, any more than other writers and their fans might be...there have been some notable libertarian Sci Fi guys, I think...but yeah, authors and artists tend to be leftists.

Not having ever been at a convention, I can't relate; but I have ready literally hundreds of SF novels in my younger days, and met dozens of likeminded SF fans who dismissed fantasy in a heartbeat. Sword and sorcery stuff...

I am familiar with some of the more libertarian and conservative writers like Heinlein, Niven, and Pournelle. Koontz is probably in that group too.
