Are most Science Fiction authors and fans liberals/leftists?

Posted on 01/31/2005 1:37:19 PM PST by EveningStar

I've been a science fiction fan for decades and it appears to me that the vast science fiction writers and fans are liberals/leftists. Am I imagining this?

It depends on what they are fans of.

If you are talking Hard Science Fiction or 'Fur Jockstrap' fantasy, most or all are Libertarian or hard right.

Most fantasy fans are liberal.

Maybe that's why I'm primarily a hard SF fan.

Asimov was a leftie. And Ellison.

Orson Scott Card does a lot of conservative commentary.

Speaking of good sci fi, has anyone else been watching the new Battlestar Galactica? I hated the old series, but the new series is spectacular.

Not enough conflict with the cylons. The cyclon chick that haunts Baltar can be done away with. If we wanted to watch a show about mental disease we'd be watching the lifetime movie network.

Needs more space battles.

The storyline on Caprica may end up worthwhile but the fleet is moving very slowly.

Even a remake of a cheesy first series has to have resemblence to the first one. While the galactica design is good, similar but improved, the crew leaves much to be desired. Starbuck shouldn't be a girl. Starbuck is a womanizer not a woman.

Of course I still watch it but that's just because the Star Treks and Babylon five don't appear to be in reruns on any channels I get.

"Most artist types are liberals, because they're all about feelings."

I tend to agree with you. I do know a sci-fi writer, who did write for a famous sci-fi show, and is liberal to the hilt, as were and are his associates. Their condemnation of the United States more conservative ways of life and religion were a constant target in the show, lambasts laced in and out the plot and disguised amongst symbolic images.

Orson Scott Card leans to the right.

Perhaps many modern writers are left-of-center. I think SF appeals across the politcal spectrum. There's so much more to it than politics, after all. I can name one book illustrating a communist future as a horror, while another would postulate that's the only way for man to survive.

I'd say most of the good SF is written by conservative/libertarians, while liberals write wishy-washy stuff that's good for one read and then you take it back to the used bookstore.

Yes you are.

And I have figured out why over the years. Liberals cannot do creative positive imagination, which is the essence of good Science Fiction.

The demarcation line is Fantasy. Few Conservatives and normal people can enjoy that and liberals are in their element. Hog heaven.

Oversimplified, somewhat, but pretty much it.

The sci-fi and fantasy genres are particularly attractive to people who have trouble dealing with reality.

Isaac Azimov was a far-right conservative, as was Gene Roddenberry.

Roddenbooby? The 'man is perfectible through technology/ money is what corrupts man/ future socialist utopia' Gene Roddenbooby?

Hey, I love the original series, but, frankly, after that Roddenbooby's political outlook is ridiculous.

Harlan Ellison may be a liberal, but you just KNOW females have to hate him for "A Boy and His Dog." I still kind of grin whenever that story is mentioned."

I hang out on the convention circuit, I know lots of writers, most are pretty liberal except when it comes to guns, they tend to like guns.

He does now. :) Read his semi-autobiographical "Lost Boys", written several years back and you'll see what I mean.

Do you recognize the artist this artist 'stole' from? It's Frank Frazetta, (who was pretty liberal himself from what I gather, but a hell of a great artist).

ps-I wish it were more in style for women to be 'voluptuous' again.....
