Are most Science Fiction authors and fans liberals/leftists?
Posted on 01/31/2005 1:37:19 PM PST by EveningStar
I've been a science fiction fan for decades and it appears to me that the vast science fiction writers and fans are liberals/leftists. Am I imagining this?

That appears to be a dead link.

Science Fiction fans are more Conservative than fantasy fans.
Science Fiction has to be based on Science and fantasy fans only have to feel or make up things.
During the early days Science Fiction and Fantasy were listed separately.
Then it was able to find new writers, now with them lumped together, a person has a hard time finding new writers.

I know you were spoofing. Especially about Bobby Fischer. I understand he was kicked off an online chess forum for his viruent anti-Semitism.

The four book "In the Balance" is just that, an alternative history of WW2 if earth had been attacked by aliens. A great book with good use of real historical figures.
I especially loved Turtledoves "Guns of the South."

Isaac Azimov was a far-right conservative, as was Gene Roddenberry. I didn't know Roddenberry personally, so I can't refute this, but I will say he allowed an awful lot of non-conservative world view to exist in Star Trek. Especially the Next Generation/DS9/Voyager series. I realize that the episodes were written by various people, but Roddenberry as executive producer sure allowed a lot of stuff in there that made me gag.

As far as fans go, I was basing this on my experience in attending fan club meetings and conventions.

Roddenberry was a conservative? I never knew that. It seems like he was a pro-UN type, given the kumbaya vision of the TNG show...?

I'm not sure about that. I first noticed the anti-Vietnam War folks in 64 or 65. The regular Trek series began in 66.

I do know for a fact that David Gerrold had a very pro-USA splash page on his website following 9/11. He's a good guy.
