The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

FYI, A very young Elijah Wood is in Radio Flyer right now on UPN-11, in case you're interested. I've heard he's really good in it, but I've also heard it's a very tough movie to watch as it's about an abusive father.

Thanks for the heads up! I just turned to it briefly, during the commercial break for the UofA ASU basketball game that ecurbh is watching.
He is a cute kid, that is for sure! - Ecurbh also said it is hard to watch... Lucky thing that this game is on, I am not in the mood to be depressed.
To: HairOfTheDog
Boy, it is hard to watch! But Elijah does do a great job in it, especially for such a young kid!

One need read the little exchange between Pippin and Gandalf at Rivendell when Frodo wakes up after the Weathertop incident to get a full feel for the hobbit. Too funny for words.LOL! I also like the scene at Minas Tirith where Pippin scares Beregond's son Bergil by telling him "I am a halfling: hard, bold, and wicked!" :)
To: SuziQ
What was Sean Bean in before LotR? It was the first time I'd seen him.
To: msdrby
I've thought of the lembas-manna thing, too--I agree. Never thought of it as pita bread, though--LOL! :)

LOL! I also like the scene at Minas Tirith where Pippin scares Beregond's son Bergil by telling him "I am a halfling: hard, bold, and wicked!" :) That was my OTHER fav scene, one I DEARLY wished they had put in the film...I laugh every time I read it...so very Pippin...go around tweaking people's noses and then having to explain himself when his bluff is called. My other fav line is "not likely to grow any more except sideways." Typical self-deprecating humor. I like him because he is a lot like Bilbo in that respect. I did not like the way Walsh and Boyens drew him out.
just busting in to say hi again...took a beading class...learned to knot beads onto silk cord. I really really like the effects you can make with this technique : you can use up to 10 strands together and get real funky with the designs. The others there had some GORGEOUS turquoise, amber, coral and glass beads...All I had were wooden and clay beads I had been scavenging from eBay, storage and oddball places like gifts shops and garage sales. One of these days Ill have enough money to get all the silver, coral and turquoise beads I need.

He's played a lot of villains. The first role I remember him in was the bad guy in Patriot Games, opposite Harrison Ford. He was also in "Don't Say A Word," the thriller with Michaela Douglas as a psychiatrist treating a girl who may or may not be psycho.
I know he's been in other movies too, mostly as the bad guy, but those are the ones I've seen him in.

And Sean Bean was in
Goldeneye, playing Alex Trevelyan, again the bad guy.
While researching, I found this British series:
I have got to find these DVDs ... the series is set in 1809, during the Peninsular Wars (can anyone say Master and Commander? The Hornblower series? Napoleonic Wars? One of the absolutely most fascinating times in history? I thought you could!) Sgt. Richard Sharpe, of the 95th Rifles, saves the life of one Arthur Wellesley (the future Duke of Wellington); in "reward," Sharpe is given a field commission to lieutenant and command of a company of men who do not respect him.
Oh, the costumes! Oh, the battle scenes! There are 15 movies in the series! I may swoon!

Sean Bean has been in several movies, usually paying a 'bad guy'. He was in Ronin, and Don't Say a Word. He was also in a terrific movie, in a good guy role, though this one was made after LoTR, called Equilibrium. See it if you can find it. He played a Rifleman in the British Army in Europe during the Napoleanic Wars. His was the title character based on a series of books by Bernard Cornwell. He also played a modern British soldier who was held as a prisoner of war during the First Gulf war. I can't think of the name of it right now, but it was a good movie.

Hi Rose, how was your weekend? I know your weekend doesn't correspond with ours but you did just have one! :-)

And then there's the part in Moria where Gandalf yells at Pippin :) At least they put that part in the movie!
That bead knotting thing sounds interesting, but complicated! Is that hard?
To: Penny1; Rose in RoseBear; SuziQ
It's been a while since I saw Patriot Games; but I remember the villain in Golden Eye now that you mention it. He sure looked different there! That Sharpe series sounds interesting. How was Ronin--does that have anything to do with the Frank Miller series of the same name?

Hidalgo report: actually better than I expected. I had fun, except for the Orlando Bloom fangirls behind us who apparently came just for the "Troy" preview (ugh! they were dreadful!).
He looked nothing like Aragorn, first off. It was most interesting, to me, for the clash of cultures, and then for the actual adventure. Which I thought was cool, but there's a part of me that loves horse-adventure stories. I haven't read many since I was about 11 - fantasy sort of stole my interest after that - but in some way it reminded me of reading the "Black Stallion" books as a kind.
The horses, to my untrained eye, looked magnificent; interesting contrast of the mustang with the Arabians (what gorgeous horses!). There were a number of amusing scenes - Viggo faces death and fates worse than with less-than-kingly resolve, but does pretty well. Ending is as expected. I enjoyed it, though it wasn't a great movie the way LotR is.

Ah, mo' bettah!
Note the green uniform, worn by Rifles. Not as flashy as the red coats, but durned effective on the right man!

Well, I saw "Die Hard" last night on tv, for the first time, liked it except for the gatuitous helicoptor explosion.
Very funny that it was before cell phones, the criminals were cutting off communication merely by cutting phone lines! Also, Bruce Willis looked very young.
What's going on around the Hole lately?

However, the musket is pretty cool. Or rifle, apparently.

Great review! - I look forward to it. Especially the pretty Arab horses then. I haven't been able to get a good look at the horse that plays Hidalgo, but in the trailer he looks to me more like a Quarter Horse Paint than a mustang...
To: Sam Cree
Hi Sam, nice to see you! So, you've seen Die Hard, huh? I secretly love that movie. Except there's a little too much language. I like Alan Rickman as the evil German terrorist.
Not much been happening here. Just talk and stuff.
