.................................................................
The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.
FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.
I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Mister Dastardly, Ralph Rotten, Crabby Appleton...they're all still in The Institute...but I'm not allowed to contact them. Much happier this way, anyway !
Hmmmmm..that chewing thing IS a problem...but I promise to resist. If I have to, I'll get a special chewing saddle if the temptation is too great.
Lastly..I AM a special pup. Although I have been referred to on the internet as a "Pitbull Mix" or something...basically, I am descended from Captain Cook's loyal Bulldog, who was unceremoniously "requested" to leave the ship...the Captain having no sense of humor about his wet boots..and something about unexplained Rum Ration losses that my ancestor was actually in the process of investigating, when caug..uh...well, anyway...great, great, great, great, great...grandfather...and an exceptionally attractive Marsupial Dog from Australia...roughly. They're different from regular dogs, you know.

Why do you need a saddle for your flying horsie? You're such a special pup, aren't you able to ride bareback? (I suspect you just want a gigantic chew toy! Hmmmmmmm???)
I once had a dog - a Basenji - that could climb a 6-foot chain link fence. I'm not kidding! Have you ever seen anything like that?

Well...I "may" have...but it's part of my release agreement to never reveal the details of certain unfortunate "extra-legal"...perhaps...exploits with my quondum associates.
I wish you hadn't mentioned that fence thing. She broke my heart...and the subsequent "community service" I found it expiditious to do afterward was a bitch. That makes two...at least.
About the saddle...I can't wear my gaudy, theatrical spurs without a saddle that goes with it, and it's too hard to carry my oversized saddlebags myself...especially while wearing my trademark goggles and gauntlet gloves.

O.K...
I have to tell the truth. I can't sleep untill I do this...and sleep is one of my favorite things. I have some of my best ideas then.
I was in denial.
"Basically"..."roughly"...all Muttly-speak for hiding something.
She broke my puppy-heart, so I avoided revealing the fact that my earliest ancestors were in fact Basengis. Roughly. Kangal War Dog too...if you must know...with even some Ilyrian Shepherd in there here and there...but since I look predominantly bulldog-like...I simplify it for people. I don't usually like to talk about this...but it does explain a lot. I suppose I'm kind of a different species at this point...a Supermutt. The marsupial part (if I did have a pouch, do you think I would tell you..or even what I carry in it...?!) puts quite a different potential spin on the whole mix...and would seem to account for a lot. Trust me on this one...it does.

Child Again
If I could be that child again
Without a worry or care
And step into that childhood world
Where pain and hurt were rare
If I could feel your loving arms
Soothing all that's wrong
I'd slip into that world so quick
Where days were sweet and long
And you would take me to the park
I'd swing high in the air
For I had not a thing to fear
Because my mom was there

Good Morning, Russ.
The coffee is extra good this morning. I'm having a cup as I say Good Morning to everyone. Sure makes the mornings more bearable.

Well ..... you have been up a little longer than I have. LOL
I love coffee, too. I used to drink much more than I do now. I'll have another cup or two, then switch to diet Dr Pepper.

Come Day, Come Night
When it's dawn upon the prairie
Iridescent rays of light
Slant across a dew-kissed grassland
Putting shadows all to flight.
When it's mid-day on the prairie
And the lazy sun stands still,
Glassy heat mirages glimmer
To the farthest reaching hill.
When it's evening on the prairie
And the cooling night winds blow
Purple twilight shadows deepen
And a million star lights glow.
Morning, afternoon and evening
Winter, summer, autumn, spring,
My heart is ever on the prairies
And in tune with birds that sing.

If you've never seen fields of bluebonnets, sprinkled with Indian paintbrush, you've missed one of nature's great gifts. Thanks for the picture and the poem.

I've never seen fields of bluebonnets, but my mother used to talk about the beautiful bluebonnets. Now as I read my great-aunts poems and search for pictures, I understand a little of what she was talking about.
She would have loved to see some of the pictures that I've found. She would have loved the one yesterday with the longhorn in the field of bluebonnets.
