The Road House Remake Is Actually a Great Time
Jacobin ^ | March 2024 | EILEEN JONES

Do you ever hear about a new movie like the Road House remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, assume it’s terrible, mentally prepare your vicious takedown of it — and then watch it? And it’s actually. . . good?

I’d been so sure of my plan to see it, hate it, and slam it in a review. Another remake in an endless stream of them, for one thing. And the old 1989 Road House has a special place in the action film pantheon, because it’s so delightfully god-awful it takes on a kind of Mystery Science Theater 3000 delirium. It’s a surreal thing to visit that movie again, bringing the generally hideous 1980s mainstream cinematic experience back with a rush.

Some movies that were major releases then were so literally ugly, so incompetently made, so grotesquely stupid, so ideologically heinous, they become things of sordid wonder and hilarity when seen afresh.

Road House is like that.

If by some chance you never saw it, it’s about a “top cooler” played by Patrick Swayze who’s hired to clean up a honky-tonk in Jasper, Missouri, that’s been overrun by the bad element in a corrupt town. In the 1980s, due to the pernicious influence of Tom Cruise’s megahit, Top Gun, every action film protagonist had to be a top something, practically famous the world over.

In this film, a glorified security guard can awe everyone by simply saying his name is “Dalton.” The reaction is some version of “Not the Dalton.” .....

Then this new version comes out, it’s straight-to-Amazon-streaming, and the first thing we see is it has Jake Gyllenhaal in it. That’s a red-flag warning on an action film if ever there was one.

Sitting at the bar tonight the topic of Roadhouse came up, I was the only one who had seen it, and all I could say was that it was OK.

When asked why it comes down to the original Roadhouse is a guy flick, which means it has T&A in it, the only T&A in the new version is of Connor McGregor's butt. Also the film climax can be seen a mile away.

So I don't see this film being watched more that once by guys. Notice the reviewer is assumed to be a female.

I saw it a few hours ago, intrigued as to why Critical Drinker trashed it so harshly. Drinker was wrong because he was too hung up comparing the 1989 movie with this one when they're really different stories other than the basic premise and the name "Dalton". McGregor's a total hoot as a one-man cyclone. Well worth a watch, I give it a 6.5 on the 10 point scale.

I'm sufficiently unenthused by this announcement and I'll rush to NOT see it.

I thought the film was good enough. To me, Jake and the new girlfriend were just ok. But what sold the film to me was Conor McGregor. It took about 58 minutes for him to make his first appearance in the movie and it was literally a laugh out loud moment. I would tell people to go ahead and watch it.

Best part of the original Roadhouse movie was Jeff Healey. Unfortunately he passed away in 2008. An amazing guitarist and singer!

I can’t take Gyllenhaal seriously as a he-man anymore after seeing him engaging in sodomy.

The Jeff Healey Band was great in Roadhouse. The clips I’ve seen of the new movie had nothing to match that.

I enjoyed Sam Elliott’s performance in Roadhouse, too.

And it’s actually. . . good? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I enjoyed the movie on Amazon Prime.

I will watch it again.

Its an AMerican version of a Chinese Kung Fu movie. The theme similar to a Chinese monsatic Shaloin monk working hard to keep his temper and transcend his natural pattern of anger.

I just get a kick out of the Buddhist Monk mindfulness of
the main character who fights against losing his own temper.

He loses in that battle and we witess the results. Which are actually good.

oof the story. “Anger from the hell realm can do good.”

BUt he does not get the girl and he does not get to dwell happily ever after in the promised land because of his explosive anger.

Very Oriental style morality play without the usual tits and ass.Jake Gyllenhaal and Conner McGregor do a bang up job.

My favorite scene is where Jake ges up to a guy with a gun who pulls it from his waist band and Jake brakes his finger so he can’t hold the gun. I found that funny as all get out.

Saw the trailer last night and marked it for later watching - hard to find movies worth the time so anything with even a small promise of entertainment goes on the list.

I turned it off after I realized they race and gender swapped the bar owner from a white guy to a black girl. Sorry, but I’m tired of that crap.

The new Road House was terrible, and I like Jake Gylennhal, so I was certainly open to this remake. I gave it a fair chance, but it is certainly hitting checkboxes on casting choices. It takes place in the Florida Keys, which on first impressions I thought the film was taking place in West Africa.

Conor McGregor was a terrible, just absolutely terrible choice for lead henchman. He walks around naked with this stupid grin on his face during most of his screen time, and the fight scenes are nothing but jump cuts and sped up frames. You can tell there wasn’t any choreography for the fights.

The story wasn’t really a remake of Road House, it was more similar to Steven Seagals’ Fire Down Below, where there is this ‘Son of the Boss’ that keeps sending his goons to the bar, more and more goons, that keep failing. It was all just dumb. The original Road House was like a guy running an extortion protection racket on all the businesses in town, and had compelling acting, that’s why it’s a classic. This new one will be forgotten in a month.

To: going hot

Much of the movie was pc what with the casting and altered story lines. While the original was no classic, other than maybe a cult classic, I thought the remake was not good. One star

We watched it. Didn’t care for it, in particular that guy running around naked showing his rear end, which must have been a treat for homos watching it.

On to positive side, the scenery was ok and the little bookstore girl was charming. Aside from that it sucked.

Hollywood cannot do remakes very well.

Eh, he’s an actor so he’s not really a he-man or a homo. But I did rather make it a point to not watch Brokeback Mountain, even though I would like to see Michelle Williams performance. I knew it would gross me out!
