Sometime between 1400 and 1200 B.C., two Minoan men were laid to rest in an underground enclosure carved out of the soft limestone native to southeast Crete.
Both were entombed within larnakesintricately embossed clay coffins popular in Bronze Age Minoan societyand surrounded by colorful funerary vases that hinted at their owners high status. Eventually, the burial site was sealed with stone masonry and forgotten, leaving the deceased undisturbed for roughly 3,400 years.

Wow. When you intentionally look for stuff like that you never find it. Or it’s the last place you look.

If he’d only applied himself, he’d have found a dozen or so by now.

I really enjoy reading about this stuff. It makes me wonder what they looked like, about their families, their political system, etc.
Very interesting. Thanks for posting.

Crete has always fascinated me.
It’s history goes back so far that we really don’t know much about it.

Crete has always fascinated me.
Its history goes back so far that we really dont know much about it.
Or as it is turning out, about human history prior to 3,000BC, or even prior to 11,800BC, or even 160,000BC ...

Thank your lucky stars you don’t uncover unexploded ordnance like throughout Western Europe.

I was talking to a german guy in Munich back when Greece was preparing to host the Olympics and they were way, way behind. I commented on that and he said "oh, that's Greece. You stick a shovel in the ground and you turn up a 3,000 year old thimble. Then the archaeologists come with their little brooms and spoons and you have to just sit around and wait, if they ever let you work there again at all. Usually if someone finds something there by accident they quickly hide it so they don't lose everything."
Takeaway: I hope that guy didn't depend too much on that olive grove to make his living.

FUN FACT: Ancient Greek civilization actually began in Crete which developed the olive oil business and trade.
