Here is a movie that I loved as a kid. There are people who think that it is a piece of Satanic propaganda. I disagree. I just think that it is a chunky tongue in cheek, campy, pseudo horror flick from the 1970s.
Heres my take on this masterpiece of camp.
They just dont make em like The Abominable Dr. Phibes* anymore. In fact, they just dont make em like Vincent Price anymore, either. Dr. Phibes, first off, is the definitive role that Vincent Price was born to play, and second off, is firmly embedded in a different time. He belongs to the era of 1950s EC Comics horror titles such as Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and Weird Fantasy.

A Satanic Movie?
Well, well. It turns out that the Church of Satan founder Anton Szandor LaVey has claimed that the main character in this Vincent Price film was based on him.
I would have never even associated Vincent Price with any kind or works of Satan. He was, after all, just an actor who played Satanic roles to the T.
The Abominable Dr. Phibes is a 1971 British dark comedy horror film, produced by Ronald S. Dunas and Louis M. Heyward, directed by Robert Fuest, written by William Goldstein and James Whiton, and starring Vincent Price and Joseph Cotten.
Its art deco sets, dark humour, and performance by Price have made the film and its

“Phibes” is up there too.
Great movie and NOT a kiddie movie at all! Its very clever, well written, well acted by a marvelous ensemble cast! The sequel isnt as good, but still worth seeing.
It is NOT a Hollywood movie. It is British, filmed in England.
Vincent Price - - the master of horror. My fave.
I loved being scared by him when I watched his movies as a kid, then as an adult watching the same movies I realized how campy he was. LOL! He had a fabulous sense of humor.
The schlock and camp in Phibes were signs that the horror genre was exhausted. It was reinvigorated by Alien in 1979 and new literary practitioners like Stephen King.
Hey haven’t seen ya! :)
Hope you’ve been well.
Still diligent as ever, I see.
I don’t know enough of what constitutes a blog to point them out.
Cheers.
Sometimes a horror movie is just a horror movie.
I will check it out. Love Price.
I remember when heavy metal and glam rock were gonna turn all of us teens into satan worshiping minions. :)
Didn’t convert ONE PERSON that I know.
A song about the devil isn’t a lot different than a horror movie about him.
It’s just a song.
Price divorced his long-time wife to marry Brit actress Coal Browne (Auntie Mame’s friend).
Coral converted to Catholicism years before.......and as a gift to Vincent she became a US citizen.
He, in turn, converted to Catholicism.
Looks like a depiction of wickedness carried out in a most poetic and whimsical fashion.
Whatever people might dream up as being spectacularly satanic, it’s generally the more humdrum forms of evil by which the devil almost always gets his way (when he gets his way, which God makes pretty difficult to keep up). Like C. S. Lewis put it through his Screwtape character, murder is no better than cards to damn a man, if cards will do the trick.
God could vastly more easily redeem a Dr. Phibes situation (if it could even come to pass) than the situation of gang bangers. At least Dr. Phibes seems to want to salute something higher, even though his ideas are utterly cuckoo. His revenge ideas are simply not characteristic of the revenge plots we know of in the world.
A favorite movie he is in is called Champagne For Caesar. He is a zany soap making executive.
Some of the Saint OTR shows of his are good too.
The British could make good movies and telly.
What fascinating information!
It is impossible to know exactly what turns a person to evil. But many of the rampage shooters seem to have satanic beliefs/worldviews.
So I read.
It was Vincent Price’s third marriage.
She was 61, Vincent was 63, from what I can determine.
