Archaeology bombshell: Discovery of 145 human remains that 'solves biggest Bible mystery'

The researchers found a Philistine cemetery in Israel – home to 145 human remains dating back to between the 11th and the 8th centuries BC. The discovery, made in 2013 and finally revealed in 2016, may yield answers to an enduring mystery surrounding the origins of the Philistines. It came at the end of a 30-year excavation by the Leon Levy Expedition. The Philistines were an ancient people who lived from the 12th century BC until 604 BC. They are known for their biblical conflict with the Israelites.

Interestingly, they found these bones 7 years ago. Must be a lot of work. I was always under the impression the Philistines were islanders - probably from Greece/Italy area and migrated east to what is now Israel and Syria. I’d have to look it up to see if it’s the exact same time period, but there was a period of drought and hunger that forced the people of the southern Med region to relocate, causing of course conflict with other tribes/nations/people. The artifacts found may link them to other findings, but afaik there is still no written record directly from the Philistines - only records written by their enemies like the Israelites and Egyptians.

I’m not much on the Bible, but I don’t think Delilah was Philistine. Otherwise why did the Philistines have to bribe her to find out Samson’s weakness.

Because she was a hooker and he was a steady customer who might have even been persuaded to offer marriage.

Been lurkin’ and occasional post. Working my butt off in the last few years and less time than before. Hope all is well with you. As an urgent care/family physician, you can only imagine what life has been like in the last 5 or so months

hey married the daughters of Adam and Eve. Duh.

I know that. (After all, Eve is the mother of all living), But I would like to know more about who these daughters were, how long they were fertile (assuming they lived for 400+ years as many of these folks seemed to, etc.

There are stories in apocryphal books like The Book of Enoch, but those are not reliable and are often imbued with Gnosticism.

And e Romans named Israel after them when the Jews were defeated - called it Palestine; in Hebrew, Philistine means ‘invader’

I just looked at Judges 16. It doesn't say directly but in my opinion the story makes more sense if she was a Philistine woman. She is identified as a woman from the valley of Sorek.

Samson's earlier wife was a Philistine woman from Timnath--her name is never given.

In the Septuagint, "Timnath" is Thamnatha and Delilah's name is given as Dalila or Dalida.

“I thought Delilah was a Hebrew sent to seduce him...but I may have remembered it incorrectly.”

I thought she seduced Samson.

I had always assumed that the Palestinians were descendants of the Philistines but archaeologists say no.

It does seem they were a pretty fair opponent of the Israelite’s. Often winning against them.

I want to know what Selah means in musical terms and that melodies David put the Psalms to originally.

Other than stating that she was a harlot who lived the Valley of Sorek, there is no reference as to her tribal origins.

They knew they were Philistines because of the clear indications of bad wine/food pairings, and a total lack of appreciation for the finer aspects of bouquet, color, and finish in a proper wine. To say nothing of their totally gauche choice of footwear—really? Sandals after Labor Day? Really?

The Philistines first appear as Peleset among the so-called Sea Peoples attacking Egypt. They were in a small part of the Holy Land. Herodotus already in the 5th century BC refers to "Palaistine Syrie" (1.105) and to "the Syrians in the Palaistine" (2.104) but it isn't clear how large an area he meant by that--no doubt the Philistine area but maybe more. Of course the Romans later used "Palaestina" in a wider sense.

At the time of the Muslim invasion in the 7th century, the Holy Land seems to have been predominantly Christian with Jewish and Samaritan minorities (but I don't know the proportions or if there were still some pagans). In the 19th century before the Zionist movement started the country was Arab speaking and majority Muslim but with Christian and Jewish minorities. The Christians were probably descended from the inhabitants of the 7th century (maybe a bit of Crusader ancestry too). The Muslims could have been descended largely from the 7th-century inhabitants too if their ancestors had converted. There must have been some immigration from Arabia but there wasn't a huge population in Arabia to begin with and the Muslims also went to other places like Egypt and Iraq. There would also have been slaves brought in from various places during the Middle Ages and later.

I think it is mistaken to assume that modern Palestinian Muslims are all descended from Arabian immigrants. DNA studies seem to show a relationship between Palestinian Arabs and Jews as if both groups have ancestry going back to the people there in Biblical times. (Of course we know that the Jews are descended from the Israelites.)
