Though it's likely a moot point, a judge on Monday raised Darrel E. Brooks Jr.'s $1,000 bail in a Milwaukee domestic violence case to $200,000. His new lawyers argued it was unnecessary, given Brooks' $5 million bail in the Waukesha Christmas Parade case, when he's facing six counts of first-degree intentional homicide. "Bad facts make bad case law," said Brooks' attorney, Robert Hampton. "I'm fearful where this leads." He cited case law that suggests cash bail is unnecessary when there's no risk a defendant won't appear for the next court date.

As it did in the Kyle Rittenhouse case, the major media relentlessly trumpeted a false story, this time about Jussie Smollett. In both cases the tales were of white supremacists committing horrific crimes. In both cases, when the fabulist tales were rejected by jurors who heard and weighed the evidence, the outcome was ignored or downplayed. But doubtless the distrust of their fellow citizens among the Black community in Kenosha and, then Chicago, and perhaps the country, was heightened by these lies. In both cases, celebrities and politicians bought and promoted the fake stories. And improbable it was unless you...

On August 25, 2020, Kyle Rittenhouse defended himself from numerous attackers with an AR15 type (Smith & Wesson M&P 15) rifle. The rifle was not legally owned by Kyle. He had legal possession of it. This was due to a quirk in the law. People under the age of 18 have always been able to buy rifles from private owners and possess them, but they are not allowed to buy them from licensed federal dealers. Kyle Rittenhouse had given money to Dominick Black to purchase the rifle from a licensed federal dealer, with the understanding he would transfer ownership and...

Wisconsin is a case study in the kind of ho-hum execution of elections that chips away at Americans' confidence in our elections. After a 10-month review of the 2020 election in the Dairy State, the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty has compiled its findings — which set off alarm bells about the state’s massive election integrity shortcomings and reveal weaknesses the swing state must shore up before the next election. The review, which WILL said it approached “without presumption as to what it would find,” included polling, surveys, an inspection of the law, interviews with elected officials, an analysis...

MADISON — John Chisholm’s reputation for injecting politics into prosecution precedes him, and that might be reason enough why no Milwaukee taxpayer has yet to file a complaint (as of Wednesday night) against the Democratic Milwaukee County district attorney on charges of prosecutorial misconduct, legislative sources say. Republican lawmakers, among others, are urging Gov. Tony Evers to fire Chisholm after his office recommended a mere $1,000 bail for the man suspected to have killed six people and injured some 60 more in the Waukesha Christmas parade massacre. As Empower Wisconsin reported Wednesday, Evers will not even consider opening an investigation...
