Barring any weekend surprises, it looks like Wildrose leader Danielle Smith will be Alberta's next premier. Several polls have come out over the past 72 hours putting Smith's upstart Wildrose Alliance ahead of the governing Progressive Conservatives both in terms of popular vote and seat distribution in the provincial election. -excerpt- Regionally, according to the Abacus poll, the Wildrose Party has a commanding lead in Calgary with 44 per cent support followed by the PCs at 29 per cent, the Liberals at 13 per cent, and the NDP at 12 per cent. Here are the other highlights: - Wildrose would take 45.5% of the popular vote if an election were...

A new poll has put Alberta's Wildrose Party firmly on track for a majority government, holding a 13-point lead over the incumbent Progressive Conservatives who just months ago were a shoo-in for victory. The poll was conducted Monday and Tuesday through an online panel of 1,050 respondents and shows the right-wing Wildrose at 43 per cent of decided voters, the PCs [Progressive Conservatives, “Tories”] at 30, the New Democrats [leftist] at 12 and the Liberals at 11 per cent province-wide. Of those sampled, 19 per cent were undecided.

Reuters) - Alberta Premier Alison Redford called an election on Monday as the province's ruling Progressive Conservatives look to extend their 41 years in power by overcoming a challenge from the hard-right Wildrose Alliance. Redford, a Calgary lawyer who took over the leadership of the center-right Conservatives in October following the resignation of former Premier Ed Stelmach, will face her first test at the polls on April 23. She is opposed by Wildrose Party leader Danielle Smith, a libertarian and former journalist. Wildrose was formed in 2008 and quickly drew in opponents of Stelmach's policies, particularly his failed attempt to...
