Waves of drones tumbled out of the sky above Camp Atterbury, Indiana, on Tuesday, their mechanical death throes punctuating what was otherwise a quiet morning.
Why it matters: Drone swarms are a nightmare for security officials all over the world, whether they're overwhelming a Russian air base or hovering near an American airport.
How it happened: Defense contractor Epirus this week demonstrated its drone-frying Leonidas to observers from various U.S. military services and foreign countries, including some in the Indo-Pacific.

The big picture: The drone-counter-drone game is upending military spending and power dynamics while, at the same time, forcing a rethink of stateside security (consider power plants or the upcoming World Cup).

Heh.
Ivan will send in a few cheap drones.
If they don’t come back, Yuri with a missile or howitzer will take out Trump’s expensive new system.
Will cook you a wild turkey right done in seconds before it een knows it wasn’t supposed to be flying there...
RE: Yuri with a missile or howitzer will take out Trump’s expensive new system.
And what will Yuri and Ivan do if Trump responds with a larger counterattack?
I suspect a drone surface cover of wettable paper would leave the new system operators steamed.
“Ivan will send in a few cheap drones.

Are you moving to Russia orto China when the US is defeated?
“And what will Yuri and Ivan do if Trump responds with a larger counterattack?”
Shoot and scoot is the modern way of war.
This seemed inevitable. They already have drone “rifles” that electronically take down drones.
RE: Shoot and scoot is the modern way of war.
And you believe/hope that Yuri and Ivan can evade American detection with this tactic?
My area of Florida has the demographics of Northern Virginia when I left it.
What the hell, man?
Do you hate America AND Trump?
Not much different than Colonial militia men standing behind trees and sniping with Pennsylvania (aka “widowmaker”) rifles.
Watching the latest advances in drone technology is like a real life version of the old Mad Magazine’s “Spy vs Spy” series (for those old enough to remember). Each new advantage is short lived, leapfrogged by the next one, and fortunes are spent on technologies that are quickly rendered obsolete. It’s wasteful but necessary, horrifying but also fascinating.
People talk about drones as if combat the way we knew it is gone forever.
It isn’t.
War remains an atavistic endeavor where humans will have to take each other’s lives. It is not going to turn into a push button war.
The dynamic of warfare is invention of newer and more deadly forms of attack, followed by invention of defensive countermeasures to that new form of offensive warfare.
People look at the conflict in Ukraine and think that is how things will be going forward and nothing will change that.
Thinking like that is just as dangerous as approaching naval warfare in the 21st Century as if it were still WWII in the 20th Century Pacific.
“And you believe/hope that Yuri and Ivan can evade American detection with this tactic?”
The Russians can figure out when satellites will pass over.
Ivan and Yuri will wait a few minutes.
Drone fryers will be the favorite target of Russians.
Yes. You understand this.
I thought new drones were being made that aren’t affected by jamming. Is this something different? Or maybe I missed something.
But yes, it does seem like leapfrog. A Spec-Ops friend of mine had intel he obviously couldn’t share with me but assured me that our military is always a few steps ahead of anything that is known publicly. I hope that’s true.
Finally...
Doom and Gloom Prevails.
