The infection rate in Wayne County today is 25 percent of the the population and growing.” Stone continued, “There’s no use of masks or gloves in [Federal Correctional Institution, Jesup]. Allegheny County Controller Chelsa Wagner will stand trial again in Detroit next year on a felony charge of assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer, barring a plea deal, her defense said Friday. The decision by prosecutors to retry the case against Ms. Wagner comes exactly one month after the end of her first trial, when a Detroit jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on the felony — prompting the judge to declare a mistrial on that count. That same jury in November acquitted Ms. Wagner of misdemeanor disorderly conduct — which, like the felony, stemmed from an encounter...

The mom of a 10-year-old boy received the shock of her life recently: a phone call from her local juvenile court, explaining that her son would be charged with aggravated assault, months after a playground game of dodgeball at his elementary school. “I couldn’t believe it,” Cameishi Lindley, mother of soon-to-be-fifth-grader Bryce Lindley, told 7 Action News about the call, received from the Wayne County Juvenile Court in Canton, Mich., on July 24. Now, because the boy being punished is black and the boy who was injured is white, some critics are calling the incident racist, while others — including...

A Wayne County Commissioner on Tuesday unveiled a plan for new limits, taxes, mental screening and background checks on the sale of ammunition. District 6 Commissioner Reggie “Reg” Davis, a radio host who entered politics after his brother was fatally shot, announced the multi-pronged proposal at a press conference held at his family’s mausoleum space. In addition to calling on more controls nationally, the measure would mandate local regulations that would include a mental illness and background check certified by law enforcement prior to each bullet sale — with police handling the transfer. “We’re up against some state and federal...

A “Black Swan Event” is: “An event or occurrence that deviates beyond what is normally expected of a situation and that would be extremely difficult to predict.” In 2016 the defection of Black voters from the Democrats could possibly be called a Black Swan Event but now Democrats are faced with the probability that it was actually a new reality. In 2012 Blacks made up 13% of the electorate and voted 93% for Barack Obama. By 2016 Black participation in the election had slipped to 12% and just 88% had voted for Hillary Clinton. The turnout and voting preference of...

Voting machines in 37 per cent of Detroit precincts recorded more votes than mathematically possible during November’s presidential election, according to records obtained by The Detroit News. Reports obtained by the newspaper from Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett found that in 248 of the city’s 662 precincts, more votes had been counted than the number of people who had been marked as having voted, which might serve as evidence of voter fraud across the city. Following the report, Michigan’s Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced plans to conduct a full investigation into the irregularities. Detroit was one of the areas...

There are some really strange things going on in Detroit with the vote. First the Detroit Free Press wrote an article saying that over 59% of Detroit precincts couldn't be recounted due to mismatched votes. Then the claims that there are 85,000 uncounted votes in Detroit. So I did a little digging. First the Wayne County Clerk lists 1.134 million ballots cast, but if you add the total presidential votes there are 1.252 million total. Second, Detroit is listed as having a 97% voter turnout, but is short the 85,000 votes vs ballots cast. This matches votes cast for other...

A faculty committee has proposed adding a three credit hours requirement in diversity to the general education curriculum at Wayne State University. It also recommended that WSU drop its university-wide requirement in mathematics, an idea that was carried out on June 13. “We are proposing the creation of specific ‘Diversity’ courses, with students required to take one course in this designation,” said a document from the General Education Reform Committee, which is recalibrating what the university will expect from all students who earn a degree from the state university. It released the proposal in May.

Ann Arborites often talk about the possibility of commuter rail service between Ann Arbor and Detroit in wistful tones, as if envisioning a beautiful pipe dream. But this November's election will make that vision a very real possibility. The Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan (RTA) will put a millage proposal before voters in Washtenaw, Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties this fall to fund its transit master plan for the region. In Washtenaw County, along with bus rapid transit service from Ann Arbor to Ypsilanti, that plan includes Detroit-to-Ann Arbor commuter rail making eight round trips a day at speeds...

Judge of the Millennium Wade McCree has a special place in the hearts of ATL’s writers. The former Wayne County circuit judge had a penchant for disrobing for shirtless selfies and sex in his chambers, and was consequently disrobed by the Michigan Supreme Court. On Monday, the Sixth Circuit correctly (if you mean “applying the law as it currently exists,” and “incorrectly” if you mean “adopting the better policy”) held that Judge McCree is immune from a civil suit brought by a man McCree slapped with a tether and high child support payments. The man’s complaint is that while Judge...
