Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) gambit to attach the SAVE Act to a stop-gap spending bill failed in the House on Wednesday after Republicans opposed the bill.
The six-month stop-gap spending bill, otherwise known as a continuing resolution (CR), failed 202-220.
Fourteen Republicans voted against the legislation and two voted “present,” while three Democrats voted in favor of the bill.

Excellent comment by Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN):
Today I voted against another spending bill that didn’t cut a single cent in federal spending. It adds a trillion dollars to our debt, spends at the same level as when Nancy Pelosi was Speaker, and funds the Biden-Harris White House’s open borders, America Last agenda.
Nearly 60% of Hoosiers say they are driving less to save money on gas and families in Indiana are struggling to cover everyday expenses more than in any other state in the Midwest.
I will not go along with inflationary, Biden-Harris spending that has already made it impossible for working families to make ends meet. Now that this CR has failed, I hope that Speaker Johnson will put a spending bill on the floor that cuts spending and includes the SAVE Act.
Once thy remove the provision blocking Illegals from Voting, they’re gonna line up to pass it.
It’s only happened 307 times.
Who believes they’re not going to fold?
Today I voted against another spending bill that didn’t cut a single cent in federal spending.
The interest on the Fed debt is over a trillion dollars. Gotta start cutting somewhere, please! Not just a single cent, but billions of dollars. We can all name items for Congress to cut, but those ah*les just spend even more. Maybe we can ask our allies for donations... /s
I just wrote to my Rep asking him why he did NOT vote against this monstrosity.
Pleeeeez...He took Business Administration and then went on to Law School.
Indeed. It’s a good thing President Trump is a fiscal conservative. I’m sure he’ll cut an even better deal with a likely Democrat Speaker in his second term.
BINGO!
Any chance at meaningfully changing spending is contingent on control of the Presidency and Congress. Winning the election has to be prioritized, because if the Dems hold the Presidency and win Congress, things are only going to get worse.
Win the election, and we at least have the chance to make changes. Whether Trump and a MAGA Congress will actually cut spending is a much different question, but at least it won't be the Democrats driving the bus.
And if anyone thinks that Republicans shutting down the government is going to help Republicans win this election...they need to quit chewing on those wacky mushrooms.
Vote against save act?
Isn’t this a defeat of the Save act?
WTF? I was a fine arts graphic design major, 3 credits from having a minor in theater. I did costume design, sound, and lights, I was one of the few straight guys, and the only conservative. Theater folk used to be surprisingly accepting and not militant about their deviancy, of course that was nearly 30 years ago.
They will still pass a bill. They will just remove the save act. The complaints about defense spending are all a gambit to support illegal immigrants voting. Its not about substance.
You’re supposed to believe the GOP is going to stand up and stop spending for the first time in our lives.
The same people that lifted the Debt Ceiling for Joe out of the kindness of their heart, and for nothing in return.
Right???
The only reason these representatives voted no was because the save act was a part of the bill.
Trained Seals on Free Republic will clap if any spending bill is stopped, even if stopping that bill represents a defeat of National sovereignty. Total Feds.
Speaker Hakeem Johnson is a fraud that can’t be trusted.
Tonite, Judge Jeanine said he was a THEATRE MAJOR....is she wrong?
Boy I can’t find it??
