The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved $100,000 in funding for Planned Parenthood of Michigan Title X Services to the community on Nov. 20. These services include breast cancer screenings, contraception education, sexually transmitted infection and HIV testing and other wellness exams. Title X funds do not pay for abortion services. According to the press release, Planned Parenthood of Michigan serves roughly 10,000 patients in Washtenaw County alone, and was recently stripped of its funding when the Trump administration updated Title X regulations in March. Title X intends to provide health care services to low-income and uninsured individuals at...

A Houston police spokesman declined to comment on the charges Wednesday.

Native American elder Nathan Phillips, in his own words Native American elder Nathan Phillips, who has made headlines everywhere after a video showed him in a face-off with a Catholic school student in front of the Lincoln Memorial, spoke at length with CNN the day after the incident. Phillips described what he felt was hatred coming from the young people in the crowd, who are pupils at Covington Catholic School in Kentucky and who had traveled to the nation's capital to attend the March for Life rally, also held Friday. The interview was conducted Saturday after the video went viral....

It appears that most of the teenagers in this video are from a Catholic high school near Covington, Kentucky, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. They mock a serious, frail-looking older man and gloat in their momentary role as Roman soldiers to his Christ. “Bullying” is a worn-out word and doesn’t convey the full extent of the evil on display here. For some of us, the gospel stories of Jesus’s passion and death are so familiar we no longer hear them. The evangelists are terse in their descriptions of the humiliations heaped on Jesus in the final hours before his...

The native American activist Nathan Phillips who is involved in the targeting of the Covington teens is a REAL sketchy character. He apparently has TWO active voter registration records in Ypsilanti (the Berkeley of Michigan). He's a "Vietnam veteran" - but was born in 1955... His wife also has an active voter registration record in Ypsi. She died in 2014...

Ann Arborites often talk about the possibility of commuter rail service between Ann Arbor and Detroit in wistful tones, as if envisioning a beautiful pipe dream. But this November's election will make that vision a very real possibility. The Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan (RTA) will put a millage proposal before voters in Washtenaw, Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties this fall to fund its transit master plan for the region. In Washtenaw County, along with bus rapid transit service from Ann Arbor to Ypsilanti, that plan includes Detroit-to-Ann Arbor commuter rail making eight round trips a day at speeds...

Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office deputies released a sketch of the man believed to have assaulted a woman who he called a gay slur in Ypsilanti Township. The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office detective bureau is now investigating the assault of a woman who was targeted by her assailants because she is a lesbian. Sheriff’s office spokesman Derrick Jackson said detectives met the 28-year-old woman again Wednesday to further develop a suspect description. Jackson said the sketch will hopefully help identify the suspect. Snipped Sheriff’s office officials have said they have no reason to doubt the woman’s report and her injuries —...

Former state Rep. Pam Byrnes, a Democrat from Washtenaw County's Lyndon Township, announced Thursday she's running for Congress to help fix a "broken system" in Washington. Byrnes is seeking the 7th District seat held by Tim Walberg, a Republican from Tipton who unseated Democrat Mark Schauer in 2010 to regain the seat. Walberg held the seat in 2007 and 2008 before losing to Schauer in November 2008. Byrnes will take her shot at unseating Walberg in 2014. "Washington is broken and Tim Walberg is part of the problem. He puts special interests and corporations ahead of middle-class Michigan families," Byrnes...
  • Before making choice for circuit court judge, voters must consider abortion stance

On Nov. 6, Washtenaw County voters will fill the first vacant circuit court judge position in nearly two decades. With your vote, you may help to decide the futures of dozens, if not hundreds, of young women dealing with unwanted pregnancies, even those resulting from rape or incest. How can this be? Aren’t these matters determined by the Michigan Legislature and federal and state appellate courts? In fact, whether a minor obtains an abortion may be determined by the decision of a single judge, acting under a state law that gives virtually total discretion to the judge. There is a...
