Walking 10,000 steps a day is one of the most popular health goals in the world, largely thanks to the influence of the best fitness trackers. This divides opinion in the fitness space: some claim it’s an arbitrary figure which has led to an obsession with “getting your steps”, while others argue that encouraging people to move more can only be a good thing. As a fitness writer, and someone who has walked 10,000 steps a day for more than a year, I have a foot in both camps. The number 10,000 is nice and round, but doesn’t seem to...

A new report makes clear the ultimate goal: tiny, uncomfortable apartments and bicycles for all. Progressives’ dirty little secret is that everyone will have to make do with much less—fewer cars, smaller houses and yards, and a significantly lower standard of living. Governments, the report says, could reduce “financial subsidies for private vehicles,” such as on-street and free parking. They could also impose charges on pickup trucks and SUVs (including electric ones) and build more bike lanes. Urbanites who suspect the expansion of bike lanes in their cities is intended to force people to stop driving aren’t wrong. The Inflation...

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said Thursday that those in the military who decline the COVID vaccination “will be given an opportunity to talk to both medical providers as well as their own chain of command so that they can fully understand the decision that they are making,” but he stopped short of saying that they won’t be given a dishonorable discharge. “I had a COVID question. The House is considering some legislation right now that would prohibit dishonorable discharge for any troop who declines a COVID vaccine. I'm not going to ask you to comment on the legislation, but...

ELMIRA, N.Y. — Lawmakers in New York are pushing legislation that could make it a crime to text and walk at the same time. A new bill proposed by the state senate would make it illegal for people to cross the street while staring at their cell phones, according to WABC. The news outlet reports there’s no clear evidence indicating that the use of personal electronics while walking causes accidents, but New York lawmakers are still considering fines for using them. Fines can range between $50 to $150 depending on the number of offenses.

As an innovator and early adopter of freeways, California became the symbolic capital of car culture. But the ease of movement conferred by the massive postwar freeway building boom was short-lived, turning the dream of car travel into a nightmare of congestion and long commutes. The story of how Californians went from getting around to getting stuck behind the wheel is deeply entwined with the history of the urban freeway, an enterprise that advanced earlier and on a larger scale here than anywhere else in the country. Half a century ago, there was reason for optimism about cars. Los Angeles...

Peter Jenkins was of the Watergate generation, a cynic who picked up his college diploma and a 75-pound backpack and set off, as he puts it, “to give this country one last chance.” Now more than five years and 4,750 miles later, he is a believer. “I have America in every cell of my body,” he exults, “and I could feel God everywhere.”.. By the time Jenkins reached the Mississippi he was no longer a vegetarian. A poor mountain man in Virginia, who offered Jenkins a lamb chop, had made him feel foolish about his no-meat diet. Once a “hyper...

Day-trippers and tourists complained they don’t know which way to turn while crossing streets in central London after being confronted by a series of arrows pointing in different directions. Around 50 sets of traffic lights near busy Trafalgar Square had their “walk” and “green man” images replaced with the new designs in June to coincide with an annual Gay Pride Festival.

At the sin-nod, some faithful prelates have been speaking forthrightly about the satanic manipulation of the sin-nod that seems to be the aim of Vatican authorities, including the pope. Archbishop Tomash Peta of Astana likened the language of the Instrumentum Laboris to "the smoke of Satan". He spoke particularly of attempts to liberalize Holy Communion for those in adultery and to normalize sodomite acts. Cardinal Robert Sarah of Guinea also expressed concern at the obvious manipulation of the sin-nod. LifeSiteNews interviewed Cardinal Burke recently. Recall that he attended last year's sin-nod. On account of the marginalization that he suffered at...

A world free of genocide will be on their minds — and comfortable shoes on their feet — when people of conscience meet Sunday morning outside of Santa Rosa’s Congregation Shomrei Torah. They’ll take part in the Walk Against Genocide, created seven years ago by a 14-year-old boy who’d become aware of the mass killings in Darfur and felt compelled to act. Since then, the walk Gabe Ferrick founded has raised more than $100,000 for relief to survivors of genocide in Darfur, Congo and elsewhere, and for advocacy to resolve the issues that can lead to mass killings. Participants in...

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - About 5,500 more people could survive a major tsunami hitting the Pacific Northwest if they just walk a little faster to higher ground after roads are knocked out, a new study shows. The report published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences looked at 73 communities along 700 miles of coastline in Oregon, Washington and Northern California. The area is considered most at risk from the next major earthquake and tsunami in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, where two plates of the Earth's crust come together miles off the coast. Emergency preparedness experts...

During a speech at the Democratic National Committee meeting on Friday, President Obama openly mocked Republicans for obstructing his policies, and took credit for an improving economy. Obama claimed that Republicans are shifting their rhetoric to appeal to more middle class Americans, but that their policies remained the same. “There is this old saying, you can’t just talk the talk … you gotta walk the walk!” he said. “We’ve been walking the walk.” Obama rehashed a lot of his second term agenda in the speech, calling for more tax hikes on the wealthy to support government programs for the middle...
