Peter Jenkins was of the Watergate generation, a cynic who picked up his college diploma and a 75-pound backpack and set off, as he puts it, to give this country one last chance. Now more than five years and 4,750 miles later, he is a believer. I have America in every cell of my body, he exults, and I could feel God everywhere...
By the time Jenkins reached the Mississippi he was no longer a vegetarian. A poor mountain man in Virginia, who offered Jenkins a lamb chop, had made him feel foolish about his no-meat diet. Once a hyper environmentalist he now is pro-oil. Its that activity that makes the country strong, he explains. America would shut down without it...
Paradoxically, just as Jenkins self-reliance peaked, he walked into a revival meeting in Mobile, Ala. and found himself humbled before God....
After a while I realized I was torturing Barbara. Women just arent as suited to this as men. Feminists might disagree but not Barbara, 30....
Many of their newfound friends, whom Jenkins refers to as my American heroes, flew to Oregon for the couples final day on the road. They included ranchers, housewives and an Oregon preacher who had guided the Jenkinses over the Cascades in 30-below-zero weathe
But that last day in Florence, Oreg. danger and pain were forgotten. With their Good Samaritans cheering, the couple stormed the dunes and rushed into the churning Pacific surf.

I was a kid at the time but his walk was featured in a couple editions of Nat Geo. He ran into some amazing people along the way.
I read this 20-something years ago.
It was the original Red-Pilling.
i didn’t realize Virginia is close to the mississippi river.
I thought "wife" was not the main thing and that I was close to the limit of words which FR allows in a title, so I left it at "New"
Uh, no.
I read both of the books on his walk when they came out and loved them both. Cooper’s death was worse than Bambi’s mother.
Within walking distance.

And NatGeo wanted to edit out his conversion story, but at a last meeting a head person asked him what his most profound experience was. Jenkins said it was his conversion, and the head guy responded, "Make sure that's included." All this is a paraphrase of what I read from Jenkins.

I guess it should have said "A poor mountain man way back in Virginia," in case someone saw it as placing the two together, or "By the time Jenkins reached the Carolina's he was no longer a vegetarian," if in fact he had finally concluded he was done with it. But maybe we need not be so fault-finding.
I also read both books. They are great.
I'd love to know exactly what this "mountain man" said to this guy so I could tell it to the vego-fags I know.
It was those trips that made him argue with another college student about the merits of the movie Easy Rider, saying that the premise of the movie is wrong. That other college student: a person by the name of Hillary Rodham.
Peter Jenkins Set Out to Walk Across America and Ended Up Finding Himself a New Wife.
Still think it should be anew? 8>)
Yeah, if you walked across Kentucky.
