There seems to be quite a bit of gloom over a SurveyUSA poll of Virginia that puts Obama up by 6 percent. (I note SUSA has Obama ahead, 49 percent to 45 percent in "Central Virginia," a sub-sample of about 200 voters.) Democrats seeking to take over a Republican-held congressional seat in Northern Virginia are hammering GOP candidate Keith S. Fimian for his ties to a conservative Catholic organization, but Fimian and some Catholic leaders say the attacks are nothing more than religious bigotry. Gilmore III captured the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate on Saturday at a state party convention here that exposed some GOP doubts about Gilmore and highlighted the influence of social conservatives.
