PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii -- A ceremony held aboard the Battleship Missouri Memorial remembers the historic day 66 years ago when Japan formally surrendered to the allied nations, ending World War II. In the shadow of the Mighty Mo's guns, the patriotic ceremony spoke of war and peace. It was on this day 66 years earlier that Gen. Douglas MacArthur and representatives from 10 nations assembled aboard the USS Missouri to accept Imperial Japan's formal, unconditional surrender, ending World War II. Art Albert witnessed the surrender as a young sailor aboard the Missouri. "Well, at 18 years old, all I could...

GROTON, Conn. (Dec. 5, 2009) – Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) spoke at the Dec. 5 christening of the USS Missouri (SSN 780), a Virginia class attack submarine and the fifth warship in American history to be named after the “Show-Me” State. “We in Missouri are proud of this ship, proud of this crew, and proud of the shipbuilders that are making her,” said Skelton. The last ship to bear the name USS Missouri, now a floating museum in Pearl Harbor, was commissioned in 1944 and earned the nickname “Mighty Mo” for the tremendous firepower of her 16-inch guns and her...

Wednesday morning will present an unusual sight off Ford Island in Pearl Harbor: the uncoupling of the battleship Missouri from its mooring opposite the sunken Arizona in the pairing that symbolizes the beginning and end of World War 2. The 887-foot Missouri, the last battleship built by the U.S. and site of Japan's unconditional surrender ending the war, will be headed to drydock at about 7 a.m. if all goes as planned. Officials recommend that people go to the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park next to the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center for public viewing of the historic -...

The Battleship Missouri, scene of the Japanese Surrender to U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur on September 2, 1945, is about to get a complete overhaul and makeover. The videos above show the Missouri in action during the First Gulf War in 1991 - blasting away with her big guns. The second video shows the Japanese Surrender on her deck 64 years ago today: "On Sept. 2, 1945, the USS Missouri hosted Japan's surrender in World War II. "I'm proud of it," Art Albert said. Back then Albert was a machinist aboard the vessel. Now he sees rust and faded paint on...

The authorities in Moscow have hastily removed posters congratulating Russian war veterans which mistakenly showed the American warship USS Missouri. The posters were taken down on Wednesday - just hours before Defender of the Motherland Day. The Russian defence ministry said it did not produce the posters. A Moscow city hall official said the design "should have been shown to specialists who can distinguish one battleship from another". A defence ministry spokesman, Vyacheslav Sedov, said "it was a civilian firm that produced the poster, and the people who made it were simply incompetent". "We do have similar ships, beautiful...

Yesterday I was jolted to hear a FOX bimbette summarize Bush's visit to Pearl Harbor, where he "visited the USS Arizona memorial and also the USS Missouri, which was damaged in the attack on Pearl Harbor." 1. Someone please tell FOX that Missouri (BB-63 wasn't commissioned until 1944. The attack occurred on 7 December 1941. 2. Someone at FOX: please hire a bright high school student to give you some background on the military. Thank you. (USNR - Retired)
