Modesty is a beautiful, essential and often diminished virtue in today’s “tell-all,” ”show-all” world. There are many good definitions of modesty. Websters dictionary defines modesty first as freedom from conceit or vanity and secondly as propriety in dress, speech or conduct. It is the second definition that concerns us. The Royal Canadian Navy is looking to buy 180,000 pairs of grey, lightweight underwear with “good moisture management.”In an online notice published Friday on the government’s public works website, the Navy outlined its undergarment needs and asked for industry input on how it can develop and buy “temperate drawers” that comply with its rigorous standards.

Sheriff Grady Judd said the end of free underwear will save an estimated $45,000 a year in operation costs. Judd in a statement said, "$45,000 is one person's job we're saving. If inmates want to wear underwear in jail, they can buy it, just like hard-working Polk County citizens do." This isn't the first time the sheriff has invoked creative cost cuts. He eliminated peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cornbread, coffee, juice and fresh milk from the jail menu a few years ago, saying if inmates wanted to eat those things they should stop breaking the law.

A clothing shortage is forcing inmates in at least one Illinois prison to wear the same underwear several days in a row, causing a health and hygiene concern, a watchdog group said. The John Howard Association found during a recent visit to the Taylorville Correctional Center that inmates wore dirty and badly worn clothes that were washed twice a week, The Bloomington Pantagraph newspaper reported for a story published on Wednesday. A 46-year-old woman pleaded guilty Monday to hiding a stolen mink coat in her underwear. Stephanie Moreland was arrested New Year’s Eve by Bloomington Police after the Alaskan Fur Company reported a short mink coat was stolen by a woman who had been in the store and acting suspiciously. Moreland pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft of property. Police say she hid the mink coat in her underwear for three days while being questioned by police in jail. The coat was valued at $6,500.

Travis County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Enriquez Lopez and Leona Wallace after they say the two broke into their neighbor’s trailer to accuse him of stealing Wallace’s underwear. Deputies were called by the victim just before 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. A British manufacturer has unveiled bombproof boxer shorts that it claims can save the lives of soldiers in Afghanistan by protecting their vital organs from improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The lightweight shorts are worn under normal combat gear, reports the British tabloid The Sun, and protect soldiers where standard-issue body armor does not.
