Many gay activists compare their current “civil rights” struggles with those faced by blacks in the segregated South in the 1950s. The comparison is deemed offensive by many blacks, given that the average black income is still much lower than the average white income in America. Blacks’ educational attainment still falls well below that of white Americans, even fifty years after the landmark Brown decision. By contrast, gay Americans are wealthier and more educated than their straight counterparts. Nonetheless, lesbian millionaire (and North Carolina Senator) Julia Boseman thinks they need a helping hand. That’s why her family started a special...

Dear Chancellor: I am writing in response to a recent press release, posted on www.uncw.edu, which may be one of the worst pieces of political propaganda I have ever seen, even judged by university standards. The press release began by announcing that the UNCW Leadership Lecture Series recently launched its new season with a talk by Andrew Sullivan, former editor-in-chief of The New Republic. The press release then characterized Sullivan as a “conservative.”...

You probably know her. She’s only in her forties, but she’s already on her fourth marriage. Her kids are grown so she decides to get a job at the local university. Now she has secure employment, even if her salary and benefits are not up to par. But, most of all, she likes what she hears from day one; namely, that her employer will assiduously defend the rights of blacks, women, and gays never to be offended in the workplace. She is protected by the campus speech code. At first it starts with the occasional offhand remark. She jokes with...

For the second time in less than two years, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) has denied recognition to a Christian group, claiming that the group's desire to limit its membership to Christians constitutes "discrimination." "A Christian group has a right to be Christian, a Muslim group has a right to be Muslim, and a Jewish group has a right to be Jewish," said David French, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE). "It seems absurd that anyone in a free society would have to make this argument, but time and time again FIRE...

Attention all Southern FReepers! The UNC-Wilmington FReep plans have been finalized!Grab yours signs and come to the beach,Join us for a "Red Elephant" Freep! Background: In October 2003, the College Republicans were thrown off campus because they refused to sign a non-discrimination pledge. In other words, they did not want Democrats running the Republican club. Mike Adams (Author of the Welcome to the Ivory Tower of Babel: Confessions of a Conservative College Professor provides excellent commentary here "...the (Student Organizations Committee, or SOC) voted to revoke the registration status of the College Republicans due to the absence of the...

One of my recent articles, entitled “Timmy and Me,” stirred up even Moore controversy than I expected. But, fortunately, most of the email about the article was positive. In fact, several readers wrote to say that they had decided to make their first gun purchase after reading the article. A few even asked if I had any recommendations. Since I have several, I decided to write this article. Before I get started with the recommendations, I want to make sure that prospective gun owners develop a healthy respect for firearms and for the consequences of using deadly force. That’s why...

Dear Dr. Adams: I am writing this letter in a state of frustration and disenchantment, but also, I believe, in a state of enlightenment. Friday evening I was preparing for a weekend vacation, and I was trying to decide what reading material I would take with me. I thought about your book and headed for the nearest bookstore. Rather than waiting until I was lounging on the beach, I began reading about five minutes outside of Wilmington. After browsing through the Table of Contents, I could not help but immediately turn to those chapters that most sparked my interest (e.g.,...

Last semester, one of my students told me that he was down on America. In fact, he said that he was ashamed to be an American. He didn’t keep me guessing as to the reason for his shame and depression. He immediately disclosed that he had seen “Bowling for Columbine,” on one of the two occasions the Women’s Center sponsored its showing last year. It is bad enough that the Women’s Center uses its budget as an excuse to campaign against conservative public policies, even when the policies have little to do with the women’s movement. But in the case...

Recently, I reported on a murder that occurred during final exam week on the campus of UNC-Wilmington. The victim, Jessica Faulkner, was kidnapped, raped, and murdered in her dormitory on May 5th. Another student, Curtis Dixon, has been indicted for that kidnapping, rape, and murder and is now awaiting trial. Perhaps, the most tragic aspect of the case was apparent evidence that the murder could have been prevented by the authorities. During his call to the 911 dispatcher, the victim’s father, John Faulkner, indicated that Jessica was being stalked by Dixon prior to his alleged murder of the eighteen year-old...

The Ivory Tower of BabelBy Jamie GlazovFrontPageMagazine.com | May 28, 2004 Frontpage Interview’s guest today is Dr. Mike Adams, the author of Welcome to the Ivory Tower of Babel: Confessions of a Conservative College Professor. FP: Welcome to Frontpage Interview Dr. Adams, it’s a pleasure to have you here. Adams: Thank you. The pleasure is mine. FP: The title of your book, “Welcome to the Ivory Tower of Babel” is quite interesting. What made you choose that title? Adams: When I select a title for an editorial or for a book, I like to pick something that grabs the reader’s...

What's the status of my daughter? Mike S. Adams (archive) May 10, 2004 | Print | Send Since I wrote my last column, I have had a busy week. I began the week with a lecture at Yale Law School, which will soon be aired on CSPAN. That lecture was followed by an exciting exchange with brilliant law students offering insights from both sides of the political spectrum. Although exciting, I was disappointed with one portion of the exchange, which occurred while a student was questioning my motivation for seeking to abolish speech codes on college campuses. During the exchange,...

I recently wrote an editorial entitled “With Liberty and Comfort For All” after I was admonished for making one of my co-workers feel “uncomfortable” in the workplace. The point of the article was to argue that university speech codes are responsible for a dangerous trend on college campuses whereby the actual constitutional right of free speech is being trumped by the perceived constitutional “right to feel comfortable.”The response to my article has been simply overwhelming. In fact, I have received more email about that article than any I have ever written. Scores of readers have written with disturbing stories explaining...

On Friday, April 16, 2004, a new chancellor was installed at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The installation, which took place after Rosemary DePaolo had been serving as chancellor for nine months, was accompanied by a week of special events that included a speech by a former United States Senate majority leader. In the midst of recent criticism that a) the university has been spending too much money on speakers, and b) the speakers always seem to be Democrats; the university hired George Mitchell (D-Maine) to speak for about an hour for the sum of $40,000. Mitchell’s fee shows...

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Unmitigated Comfort Posted by Mike Adams Saturday, April 03,2004 Well, I suppose it had to happen. After eleven years of teaching at a public university, I finally got a call from one of my superiors informing me that I had made one of my co-workers feel ''uncomfortable'' in the workplace. For those who may not know, the right to feel 'comfortable'' at all times trumps the First Amendment at most public universities. Naturally, when I found out that I made a co-worker feel ''uncomfortable,'' I wanted to know what I had said or done...

Campus culture wars A handful of Christians on UNC college campuses are winning the culture war in increments; but some aren’t fighting it at all By Jamie Dean The Charlotte World Wilmington--Dr. Mike Adams says it’s “horrible.” He says it’s “appalling.” He says it’s “worse than it’s ever been.” That’s how the conservative UNC-Wilmington professor, and national columnist, describes the climate for Christians on public university campuses – particularly North Carolina public universities. Adams has made it his business to expose the liberal, anti-Christian bias that he says is prevalent on his own campus and many others. He teaches criminology...

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The parents of a first-grader are fuming over the book their daughter brought home from the school library: a children's story about a prince whose true love turns out to be another prince. Michael Hartsell said he and his wife, Tonya, couldn't believe it when Prince Bertie, the leading character in ``King & King,'' waves off a bevy of eligible princes before falling for Prince Lee. The book ends with the princes marrying and sharing a kiss. ``I was flabbergasted,'' Hartsell said. ``My child is not old enough to understand something like that, especially when it is...

On March 16th, 2004, the UNC-Wilmington Women’s Resource Center (WRC) will be hosting a speech by the Guerilla Girls. This group of anonymous feminists will be paid $6000 of public funds to dress up like apes, throw bananas at the audience, and campaign against George W. Bush. If you have never heard of them, you can log on to www.guerillagirls.com. There you can also learn more about their new book, “Bitches, Bimbos, and Ball-breakers.” This now marks the second consecutive year that the university has kicked off its so-called “Women’s History Month” (previously known as “March”) by spending taxpayer money...
