It shouldn't surprise us that the NOAA refuses to release data on how they reached the conclusion that the earth was, indeed, warming. It is the only study showing an increase in temps over the last 15 years, thus any debunking would be injurious to the climate change cause. Aside from the shocking arrogance in defying a subpoena from Congress, it's pretty obvious that the NOAA doesn't want to release the data because it will either show they cooked the books, or, as they've done in the past, misinterpreted the data. Smith can go to court, but by the time...

For union organizers in Colombia, the dangers of their trade were intensifying. When workers at the country’s largest independent oil company staged a strike in 2011, the Colombian military rounded them up at gunpoint and threatened violence if they failed to disband, according to human rights organizations. Similar intimidation tactics against the workers, say labor leaders, amounted to an everyday feature of life. For the United States, these were precisely the sorts of discomfiting accounts that were supposed to be prevented in Colombia under a labor agreement that accompanied a recently signed free trade pact liberalizing the exchange of goods...

And if Marian was willing to admit publicly in 2004 that she was not happy with Barack having a white mother, we can only surmise that Craig and Michelle must have gotten an earful about white people behind the closed doors of the Robinson home. After the release of the WTTW video, the question is: what kind of racist messages did the siblings hear from Mother Robinson while growing up?

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has suspended seven Southern women’s basketball players and eight Texas Southern players for their role in a chaotic on-court brawl Saturday night, the Advocate is reporting. The conference also announced that the game will count as a loss for both teams, meaning Texas Southern earned the SWAC regular season title at 16-2 while Southern fell to 15-3. However, Texas Southern announced it will not participate in the SWAC tournament because it will not have enough players to field a five-person lineup. Southern will have six available players for its game against Grambling on Wednesday in the...

A waiter has posted a check online, which he claims was from Valentine's Day. On it, a lengthy, angry note is written, telling the waiter that he was "stereotyping" his customers by assuming he would receive no tip. Therefore, because he stereotyped them, he received no tip. The bill came to a sizable $163.40. Next to "tip," two lines were drawn through indicating that the waiter would receive nothing extra. The explanation was on the back of the receipt... The family of a man shot in the head and killed by a Philadelphia police officer sought answers in the hours after the deadly incident during a traffic stop in the city’s Mayfair section. The deadly gunshot rang out around 2:45 a.m. along the 6600 block of Frankford Avenue after police said the suspect reached for a loaded handgun — stolen last year — in his rental car. "I would like to know why the police, law enforcement, has the right to kill instead of disabling," the victim's mother Tanya Dickerson said. "It has to stop, this is enough already."...

A scene at a Florida school between a large, intimidating black student and a seemingly unprovoking white student drew references to Ferguson this week. A video of the teens at Vanguard High School in Ocala, was posted toLiveLeak.com, showing the abhorrent behavior. An unidentified student, began aggressively verbally assaulting and pushing another as the much smaller kid sat quietly, ignoring the behemoth ruffian. The instigator became more agitated, even pushing the head of his victim, while his voice hit Celine Dion like octaves. “This is what leads to things like Ferguson,” wrote the unidentified person who uploaded the video.

A university of Connecticut investigation into a confrontation between white fraternity students and women belonging to a black sorority is regaining momentum after new allegations about the incidents were raised at a recent student community meeting. The September incident involving a rock-painting dispute has already resulted in a one-month suspension and continuing probation for the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity for "intimidation and bullying," according to UConn officials. But at a Nov. 10 meeting at the university's African-American Cultural Center, the adviser to the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority made new allegations that fraternity members used racial and sexist slurs during the...

They messed with the wrong lawmaker. Two Pennsylvania state representatives escaped unharmed Tuesday night after they were involved in a shootout with a gunman who attempted to rob them near the state Capitol in Harrisburg. State Rep. Marty Flynn, a former prison guard who's licensed to carry a handgun, fired the shots after he and Rep. Ryan Bizzarro were accosted by the would-be robber. Flynn told the Associated Press he thinks he might have been killed if he had not been carrying a concealed pistol. "We are used to fighting for the people in our districts every day," Flynn said...

The first time a reporter asked a CDC representative whether Thomas Duncan — the first patient to receive an Ebola diagnosis in the US — was an American citizen, the question seemed pretty tame. One could excuse it as a general inquiry about the Duncan’s nationality during the first press conference announcing his diagnosis. But after the CDC declined to answer, the question kept coming. "Is he a citizen?" reporters repeatedly asked. "Is he one of us?" they meant. The current Ebola crisis has been tinged with racism and xenophobia. The disease rages in West Africa, and has therefore largely...

Eight people were arrested during protests outside the police station on South Florissant Avenue on Sunday night, and residents say the tension is still palpable, nearly two months after Michael Brown was killed by police officer Darrell Wilson. At a basketball court in Forestwood Park, about a mile from where the shooting happened on Aug. 9, Tyrone Parker said he feared the community was about to hit a "another boiling point" as a grand jury weighs possible charges. “I don’t see nobody that has calmed down yet,” he said. An assistant football coach at the University of Connecticut who made a reference to Jesus in huddles has resigned, the school said. Ernest T. Jones's resignation was effective immediately, according to a statement released Monday from UConn Athletic Communications. "The University or the Division of Athletics will have no further comment on the matter as it is personnel related," officials said. Jones made headlines when he said that UConn's players will understand that, "Jesus Christ should be in the center of our huddle." The comment created a firestorm of controversy that forced President Susan Herbst to release a statement on...

WASHINGTON – An American citizen who is a member of Al Qaeda is actively planning attacks against Americans overseas, U.S. officials say, and the Obama administration is wrestling with whether to kill him with a drone strike and how to do so legally under its new stricter targeting policy issued last year. The CIA drones watching him cannot strike because he's a U.S. citizen and the Justice Department must build a case against him, a task it hasn't completed. Four U.S. officials said the American suspected terrorist is in a country that refuses U.S. military action on its soil and...
