Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Saturday unleashed blistering criticism of former President Trump, blaming him for sparking the attack on the Capitol while also explaining why he didn't vote for a conviction. McConnell also suggested that Trump could face criminal prosecution for his actions. "There's no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it. The people that stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president," McConnell said. "And having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing...

A majority of Kentucky voters do not want to see the Senate convict former President Trump of inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, according to a new survey from Mason-Dixon Polling and Research. A slight majority of respondents – 51 percent – said they would oppose Trump’s conviction in his impeachment trial should the Senate find him guilty of stoking an effort by his supporters to storm the Capitol and disrupt the congressional certification of the Electoral College vote last month. By comparison, 41 percent said they believe Trump should be convicted on the charges, while another 8 percent...

George Robles (SJPD photo)A tortoise named Michelangelo is recovering after a man broke into a San Francisco Bay Area preschool and stabbed and beat the pet, which is estimated to be about 70 years old, authorities said. The 65-pound African sulcata tortoise was found Saturday with a piece of wood and a rake handle stabbed through his outer shell. The attacker apparently used garden tools taken from the school.“I thought he was dead … So it was almost a good feeling when he hissed at me because I knew he was alive,” Tammy Lariz, the administrator at Play ‘N’...

Mitch (via his Twitter feed).."Today, I made clear that if Democrats ever attack the key Senate rules, it would drain the consent and comity out of the institution. A scorched-earth Senate would hardly be able to function. It wouldn’t be a progressive’s dream. It would be a nightmare. I guarantee it."
  • McConnell Votes to Declare Trump Impeachment Trial ‘Unconstitutional’

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) voted in favor of a resolution declaring the impeachment trial of former President Trump “unconstitutional” on Tuesday. * * * However, only five Republicans voted against the resolution: Mitt Romney of Utah, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania. At the close of the impeachment trial itself, at least 17 Republican senators would need to join Democrats in order to convict Trump.

Most of the time, Americans pay scant attention to the rules that the House and Senate choose to govern themselves. We laugh when the House decides to go for gender-neutral language, but none of us thinks that makes any real difference. However, in the Senate, "China" Mitch McConnell has paved the way for a rule change that will allow the Democrats to alter forever America's longstanding structure and enable them to become a permanent governing class.

Mitch McConnell, the U.S. Senate Republican leader, said on Monday he would agree to a power-sharing agreement with Democrats, dropping demands that had held up the basic organization and daily work of the 50-50 chamber for days. Democrat Chuck Schumer, now the majority leader thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote, and McConnell had been at odds over the Republican’s request that Democrats promise to protect the filibuster, which requires a 60-vote supermajority to advance most legislation. Schumer has refused to guarantee the filibuster would stay. But in a statement, McConnell cited comments from moderate Democratic Senators Joe Manchin...

American conservatives know that after Democrats all but cheered on violence and rioting for months, the idea that Trump incited an insurrection is pure nonsense. It’s a lie and McConnell’s parroting of it is disqualifying for leadership. So why is McConnell playing along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s charade of impeachment? He thinks he can get the conservative movement back on his and the Chamber of Commerce’s team. He can’t. If he pushes this impeachment conviction, as he seems to be, he should have no place in Republican leadership. It is nothing short of a betrayal of Republican voters.

ANALYSIS/OPINION: Scarcely had Donald Trump even packed his last bags and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was already throwing his final daggers at the president’s back, cutting deals with the Democrats, meeting behind closed doors with Sen. Chuck Schumer. It’s the final step. The “four legs good, two legs bad” has successfully shifted to “four legs better.” For those who aren’t familiar: The phrases come from George Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” the fictional account of a barnyard uprising against the oppressive humans. The rebellion, buoyed by the phrase “four legs good, two legs bad” — as a means of keeping the...

In one of his final acts as majority leader, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is pressuring Democrats to keep the filibuster — the procedural tool that liberals and progressives are eager to to do away with so President-elect Joe Biden’s legislative priorities can be approved more easily over GOP opposition. McConnell has told Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer that retaining the legislative filibuster is important and should be part of their negotiations for a power-sharing agreement in the narrowly divided Senate. Schumer and McConnell met Tuesday to begin hammering out the details of organizing the chamber, which will be split...

Republican senators are wrestling over what they want their party’s future relationship with Donald Trump to be after he leaves office on Wednesday. Faced with a deeply divided Senate Republican conference, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is giving his colleagues free rein to vote their conscience when the Senate tries Trump on charges that he incited an insurrection. McConnell is telling colleagues that he himself hasn’t decided whether to vote to convict Trump on a House-passed article of impeachment and associates describe the GOP leader “as furious” over that attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob. The New...

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell supports Democrats' move to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump and is "done" and "furious" with him, sources familiar told Fox News. It is unclear how McConnell would vote in an impeachment trial, should House Democrats vote to impeach Trump. It is not clear at this point whether McConnell would vote to convict. One source told Fox News that McConnell has not made up his mind about what to do about impeachment, and does not see this as a partisan exercise like the previous impeachment effort against Trump. Another source told Fox News that McConnell...
  • Why have Americans stopped eating turtle?

America has a food diversity problem. Chicken, pork, and beef account for many of the animal proteins found on our dinner table—the product of decades of agricultural industrialization—and this has left us with cheaper but more limited options at the butcher’s counter. Once a year we all sit down to eat turkey, but when was the last time you had snipe, mutton, or rabbit? Perhaps the mightiest protein to fall out of favor, though, is turtle. From the earliest colonial days, Americans were smitten with this four-legged reptile, and turtle soup—its most common preparation—was a restaurant norm into the 1970s...

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced early Tuesday morning that the Senate will return to Washington on Dec. 29 in order to respond to a potential veto from President Trump of a mammoth defense bill. McConnell, speaking from the Senate floor, said that he had struck a deal with Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) for the chamber to return for a rare post-Christmas session where he said they will "process" a veto override, if it's passed by the House. "My intention was and is to ensure the Senate continues fulfilling our obligation to the men and women of...

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been a heroic, brilliant fighter on the liberal wing of the Supreme Court for 27 years, and I'm hoping she keeps doing what she does for years to come. But Ginsburg is 87 years old, and on Friday she announced that she is undergoing chemotherapy for a recurrence of liver cancer. She has previously had surgery for lung cancer, radiation treatment and surgery for pancreatic cancer and treatment for colon cancer, and she's bounced back before, so let's not count her out.... So, back to Ginsburg. If she were to die or resign in the coming...

VIDEO I have seen this scene many times in my backyard. A turtle digs up dirt made soft by a recent rain, lays its eggs, followed by the inevitable crow digging up some of the eggs to eat. However, yesterday an interesting twist. The turtle probably only seemed to lay eggs, perhaps knowing of their fate due to the crow standing nearby. This was followed by the crow furiously trying but failing to dig up the eggs. Watching this crow you can tell it was incredibly frustrated by its failure to find any turtle eggs in the ground.
