The following text is the full statement released on Thursday by North Korea's KCNA news agency. North Korea refers to itself as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). "Pyongyang, February 10 (KCNA) - The DPRK Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement Thursday to clarify its stand to cope with the grave situation created by the US hostile policy toward the DPRK. The statement says: The second-term Bush administration's intention to antagonize the DPRK and isolate and stifle it at any cost has become quite clear. As we have clarified more than once, we justly urged the US to...

'Team America' unsettles Team Kim in Pyongyang Special to World Tribune.comEAST-ASIA-INTEL.COMWednesday, February 9, 2005 The caricature of North Korea's "Dear Leader", Kim Jong-Il, in the film, "Team America: World Police," is striking a discordant note among North Korean officials, and probably their supreme leader himself, despite his well-known love for private viewings of foreign movies. North Korean leader Kim Jung Il in Paramount's "Team America: World Police - 2004." Word from Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is that the North Korean embassy there is asking the government to ban the film, the creation of Trey Parker and Matt...

PRAGUE - The North Korean embassy in Prague is calling for a ban on Team America: World Police in the Czech Republic. ...."Such behavior is not part of our country's political culture," the North Korean diplomat added. "Therefore, we want the film to be banned." However, the Czech Foreign Ministry said people would continue to be allowed to see the film, which had its Czech premiere on Feb. 3. "We told them it's an unrealistic wish," ministry spokesman Vit Kolar said. "Obviously, it's absurd to demand that in a democratic country."

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) - North Korea's embassy in Prague has demanded that the film "Team America: World Police'' be banned in the Czech Republic, saying the movie harms their country's reputation, a report said Saturday. North Korean diplomats issued their protest to the Foreign Ministry on Thursday, saying the film ridicules North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, the Lidove Noviny daily said. The film, by "South Park'' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, uses a cast of puppets _ including one of Kim _ to poke fun at the U.S. war on terror. The team of marionettes fights terrorism,...

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - North Korea's embassy in Prague has demanded that the film "Team America: World Police" be banned in the Czech Republic, saying the movie harms their country's reputation, a report said Saturday. In the film by "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, a team of marionettes rushes to keep North Korean leader Kim Jong Il from destroying the world, reducing world capitals to rubble along the way. "It harms the image of our country," the Lidove Noviny daily quoted a North Korean diplomat as saying. "Such behavior is not part of our country's political culture....

The Hollywood musical may be alive and kicking this year with Andrew Lloyd Webbers 'Phantom of the Opera' and Cole Porters 'De-Lovely' in the running for Oscars, but the Academy Awards has ruled out any Oscars for original musicals this year. The board of governors, acting on the recommendation of the musical branch, voted late Tuesday not to activate its dormant original musical category because only five films would have qualified for consideration. The films that hoped to be in the running included 'Home on the Range', 'Team America: World Police,' 'The Chorus', 'Open House,' and 'Big in Germany.' Although Academy...

Movie guru David Stratton loves a political satire, but only if it's kind to the Left. He gets zero stars for these heavily ideological critiques. YOU may sometimes doubt it's really true our arts are policed by commissars who whip stray artists into a Leftist line. Then suddenly one of these commissars -- it's David Stratton this week -- leaps out and belts a dissident, and you then see how brazenly this work is done. Stratton is not just any film critic, but the Godfather Parts One, Two and Three of the profession. Not only does he review films for...

Something is going on in North Korea, but nobody knows exactly what. Portraits of Kim Jong-il have been taken down from some (but not all) public places. The official Nork news agency denies that any have been taken down, though this is contradicted by several reports. His favorite mistress just died, and he is said to be in mourning. Offical television and radio braodcasts from North Korea appear to be toning down the honorifics they use when uttering his sacred name. Some speculate that Kim is deliberately downplaying the cult of his own personality, in an effort to begin reforming....

  • Jim Emerson: On celebrities, Politics, and movie critics (shilling for Roger Ebert)

By Jim Emerson Editor, RogerEbert.com October 14, 2004Who's the, uh, biggest villain in "Team America"? Kim Jong Il or Hollywood celebrities?"You should learn to keep your opinions OUT of your reviews!" Every critic I know has received at least one letter like that from an indignant reader. Of course, it's an absurd proposition; critics are paid to express their opinions, and the good ones (who exercise what is known across all disciplines as "critical thinking") are also able to cite examples and employ sound reasoning to build an argument, showing you how and why they reached their verdict. Well, since...

Just a week until Election Day and no honest person can tell you who's going to win the presidency. I've put modest amounts of dough on George W. Bush to squeak past John Kerry by a 1.5 percent margin in the popular vote, while taking the Electoral College with a tally short of 300. That's a far cry from 2000, when I was certain the Texan would defeat Al Gore comfortably. There's too much conflicting information buzzing on the Internet about last-minute dirty tricks, upcoming stories that'll embarrass either candidate and an absurd number of national state polls that are...
  • Vanity- Anyone catch the great election satire last night?

After seeing last night's South Park and Team America: World Police, I got a really good sense that Trey Parker and Matt Stone offer the best political satire, not the Daily Show. Although the Daily Show can be amusing at times, it is definately politically involved and liberal. Parker and Stone's ability to take steps back and look at the political landscape satirically is unrivaled today. If you can get past the bad languange and flatulence jokes, there is certainly something to be gained from watching their show.

Sorry for the vanity. Saw this movie this past week: two words. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. The movie begins with the team attacking terrorists in Paris. In the process, the team destroys the Eiffel Tower and priceless art. It was unclear whether the political commentary was (1) America has been reckless in the war on terror or (2) screw the French. I was hoping for the latter. However, this proved to be wrong based on other scenes in the movie. Particularly, when the team - while pursuing more terrorists - mistakenly blows up the Sphinx. The theme was clear: America rushes to...

Just wanted to add my .02 about this movie. It was one of the funniest movies that I have ever seen. Kim Jong Il was priceless, especially when he became mad. The songs were great. One song had lyrics like "America, f*@* yeah!" I simply cannot say anything taht will do this movie jsutice. I will have to see it again. The message was great, as these guys can deliver a great message. Be prepared for swearing, but not as bad as South Park, The movie.

ANAHEIM -- Who knew that movie press junkets were such a threat to one's mental health? The pained, disingenuous reaction of many of the nation's leading film critics to last week's release of the lunatic puppet satire, Team America: World Police, is further confirmation that the junkets appear to have helped spread in viral fashion the mentality of left-wing Hollywood blowhards from la-la land to critic land. One result: Sean Penn and Roger Ebert now appear to be swapping material. For one of the many examples he's given us in recent years, Ebert might as well have been channeling Penn...
