Michelle and I send our warmest wishes to all those celebrating Kwanzaa this holiday season. Today marks the beginning of the week-long celebration honoring African American heritage and culture through the seven principles of Kwanzaa -- unity, self determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. We celebrate Kwanzaa at a time when many African Americans and all Americans reflect on our many blessings and memories over the past year and our aspirations for the year to come. And even as there is much to be thankful for, we know that there are still too many Americans...

First Obama and Biden wanted to work with what they called the "moderate Taliban." Even the Taliban thought that was ridiculous. And it was -- sort of like a chaste prostitute. The Taliban does not share Western values, goals, objectives. The Taliban's playbook is the qur'an and its stated aims. The whole idea of a moderate Taliban or a moderate Islam is false, and Obama knows it. So now, according to Biden, the Taliban is not our enemy at all. Never mind their role in 9/11. Never mind their hosting al-Qaeda camps and working with al-Qaeda. It amounts to surrender,...

I received via email the following statement from the Confederation of Iranian Students and the Iranian Freedom Institute regarding the Basij-led attack (that's what they're calling it - the Iranians are calling the attackers 'students') on the British embassy in Tehran on Tuesday. As the U.S. and its European allies begin to impose effective sanctions on the Islamic Republic, the western democracies should anticipate that the regime will initiate more of these fully-authorized, staged incidents under the guise of a student movement. The so-called students, of course, are plain-clothed basiji following orders from the regime. Even Moussa Ghornani, a member...

Gov. Rick Perry today issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's decision to hear a case relating to Obamacare: "The Supreme Court's decision to hear this case quickly is encouraging news for Texas, which faces massive cost explosions under Obamacare, and for Americans everywhere who don't want the federal government forcing them to buy specific goods and services. I'm hopeful the Supreme Court will confirm what other federal courts have already recognized: that Obamacare is an unprecedented overreach and an unconstitutional infringement upon individual liberties." Texas and 25 other states have challenged the constitutionality of Congress' authority to force...

We are shocked by the video from a Baltimore franchised restaurant showing an assault. This incident is unacceptable, disturbing and troubling. McDonald’s strives to be a safe, welcoming environment for everyone who visits. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of customers and employees in our restaurants. We are working with the franchisee and the local authorities to investigate this matter.

In marked contrast to vows as a candidate not to use presidential signing statements as “an end run around Congress,” President Obama released a statement on the just-signed spending bill saying despite the law’s restrictions on “czars,” he will “construe” the law not to interfere with “presidential prerogatives.” The move is an aggressive power play by Obama to gain an added advantage from the deal struck a week ago between the president, Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to narrowly avert government shutdown. The legislation prohibits government money being spent on four Obama “czars,”...

TUCSON, Ariz.—The father of shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner has prepared and may release a public statement, according to a neighbor who met with Mr. Loughner's parents Monday. Randy and Amy Loughner disappeared from view shortly after the shootings, and a statement would be the family's first public comments since the attack. [Snip] Mr. Smith emerged to tell a small group of reporters that Randy Loughner had written a statement but isn't sure when to release it. Mr. Loughner is reluctant to greet the public and will try to coordinate the release through the local sheriff's office, Mr. Smith said....

The following statement is by Richard DiFederico, Department Commander of Connecticut’s largest war veterans’ organization, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States: “Those who served in Vietnam or offshore or in neighboring countries rightfully earned all the belated thanks and appreciation our nation can muster. Those who served in uniform during the Vietnam era also deserve our gratitude, which makes Mr. Blumenthal's claim to be something he is not so outrageous. It diminishes the service of all who served and sacrificed, most especially those whose names are inscribed on the Vietnam Wall. Mr. Blumenthal was considered one of...

Likud activist Moshe Feiglin demanded that the party conduct a revote on its decision 10 days ago that he lost to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, after the US State Department revealed on Sunday night that the government had pledged not to build in Jerusalem’s Ramat Shlomo neighborhood for two years. Netanyahu easily defeated Feiglin’s loyalists in a vote of Likud central committee members that postponed elections for all the party’s institutions. Netanyahu turned the vote into a battle between him and Feiglin, while Feiglin painted it as a fight over the future of Jerusalem.

A group made up of some of the biggest names in contemporary conservatism got together a few days ago and crafted what they are calling the “Mount Vernon Statement,” a manifesto of sorts meant to give direction to today’s conservative movement. Put succinctly, it fails to fill the bill. Taken as a whole this statement is fine as a short history lesson. It explains pretty clearly what the founders had wrought when their basic work was done with the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. But as a statement of principles that might guide today’s discussion I do not think the...

I can’t get excited about the Mt. Vernon statement, yet I am passionate about the ideas behind them. Surely, it must be possible to retell our founding principles without strangled or purple prose. Let’s try. The Manhattan Statement A truth once known does not become false due to the passage of time. An agreement is not made null because it has been neglected. A promise once made cannot be broken by arrogance. We have not forgotten the self-evident truths and unalienable rights upon which this country was founded. No one is above the law. All have the right to life,...

What is there to say about this statement, which is being called a new conservative “manifesto”? Someone might object that Russell Kirk said that conservatives do not have manifestoes, but that would be entirely too quaint and old-fashioned. What is one to make of the organizers’ selection of the site of George Washington’s home for a statement that refers to a foreign policy of “advancing freedom and opposing tyranny in the world”? I would say that it is in extremely poor taste, but then this statement is not directed at people like me. My admiration for Washington comes partly from...
