Go away. That’s the message the Trump administration is sending to migrants at our southern border. Under a new policy being implemented, fear of domestic or gang violence will no longer be accepted as grounds for asylum. This follows a decision by Attorney General Jeff Sessions that people making such claims will be turned back by border officials before they can plead their case in court. Announcing the decision last month, Sessions said it “restores sound principles of asylum and long-standing principles of immigration law.” Actually, this move by the Trump administration further guts the right to asylum. It goes...

Baseball players don’t always go into broadcasting or managing after their MLB career is finished. Former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Anthony Reyes took a different path, deciding to pick up a hose and become a firefighter in Los Angeles County. And as an L.A. County firefighter, he’s now reportedly on the front lines of the California wildfires, working with many others to try and contain them.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! You are wondering why I’m still saying Merry Christmas. Christmas was 10 days ago. We all know the song “Twelve Days of Christmas.” Well, contrary to what many people may think, the 12 days of Christmas begins on Christmas Day and ends with the Feast of Theophany or Epiphany, which is Monday, Jan. 6. Theophany has just as an important role in our lives and the life of the Church as Christmas. In the early Church, the Nativity of our Lord and Theophany, the feast of the baptism of Christ, were celebrated together Jan....

The House Ethics Committee announced on Friday that it is investigating allegations against Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas). The secretive panel stated that after six weeks of investigating the lawmaker, it was moving to continue its probe until Nov. 28, 2012. The Ethics committee did not specify the nature of the alleged violations of House rules that it is probing in the case, but stressed that the extension of its investigation did not indicate that Reyes was guilty. The outside Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) board referred the case to the Ethics panel on Aug. 30. Reyes lost his Democratic primary...

By the way, speaking of Texas, a major Democrat has bitten the dust. Here it is. A major upset. "In a major upset, longtime US Rep. Silvestre Reyes has lost the race for the Democratic nomination to retain his congressional seat in far West Texas. "Reyes lost narrowly to former El Paso city councilman Beto O'Rourke. Reyes appeared to be closing the gap," but he came up short at the end. He's 67 years old, first elected to Congress 1966, and he received a rare primary endorsement last month from none other than The One, Barack Hussein Obama, mmm, mmm,...

EL PASO, Texas -- Comments made about border security by former drug czar, retired general Barry McCaffrey, at a U.S. House subcommittee Friday caught the attention of U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-El Paso. "I really believe that it had a political purpose," said Reyes. McCaffrey testified that he participated in a seminar-style meeting in El Paso within the last 18 months alongside "100 people" from El Paso and Mexico. The topic was the threat of drug cartel-connected criminals operating in Texas. "People from both sides of the border said they feel intimidated and a senior police official in the city...

Terrorism: The March 1 death strike by the Colombian army against FARC warlord Raul Reyes broke open a trove of contacts in his computer. So why did the name of Barack Obama turn up there?Admittedly, it pales compared with other material from the dead thug's computer — such as FARC efforts to obtain uranium or Hugo Chavez's $300 million support. But the little Obama reference within the 15 FARC letters released by the Colombian government signals a disturbing pattern of contacts with rogue actors. It's not the first time, and Obama has yet to distance himself. In a Feb. 28...

Col. Muammar al-Qaddafi is well known now for the abuses he has inflicted on his own people during more than four decades of brutal rule in Libya, but few remember the vast campaign of carnage and terrorism he orchestrated across West Africa and Europe when he was at the height of his powers. Nor are his more recent alliance with Hugo Chávez of Venezuela and his long-standing relationship with Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua -- both of whom are busy trampling their constitutions and moving toward dictatorship -- well understood. And the fact that all three governments support the Revolutionary Armed...

Rep. Silvestre Reyes released the following statement: Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) voted against an amendment late tonight to H.R. 1, the Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011, that hinders the ability of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) to crack down on the trafficking of weapons into Mexico. The ATF has recently proposed a rule change that would require firearms dealers in southwest border states to report multiple sales of long guns, like semi-automatic assault rifles. The proposed amendment undermines the Attorney General’s ability to investigate and stem illegal gun-trafficking from the U.S. to Mexico. “As a former law...
